Croaker mentioned the possibility of Daren being responsible for the Mage Storms....It struck me strange since I'd read that part of By The Sword this morning, while caring for my sick kitten (who'd curled up in my arms and was sleeping peacefully)....I was re-reading my books, first the Arrows trilogy then BTS... I was also wondering, when Talia works w/ Kris and Dirk to retrieve Ylsa's arrows, they go into a small room, with a table: The Queen opened the door on a room scarcely larger than a closet; round, and with a round table in the center. It was lit by one lantern, heavily shaded, suspended from the ceiling above the exact center of the table. Beneath it, resting on a padded base, was a sphere of crystal. The table itself was surrounded by padded benches with backs to them. As the door closed behind them, the "dead" feeling to the room showed that it was so well-insulated against outside noise that a small riot could take place outside the door without the occupants of the room being aware of it. It was no longer possible to hear even the grim tolling of the Death Bell. Now, when I first read this portion (again), I figured it was the room in which Vanyel fused the focus-stones to the table, to the floor, and to the Haven Heartstone... However, a bit later, it reads: ...She tried to stand, but as she did so, the chamber spun around her like a top, the lamplight dimmed, and there was a roaring in her ears. Kris shoved the table out of the way so that she wouldn't crack her skull open on it while Dirk knocked over the bench in his haste to reach her before she fell;... I bring this up because, if this WERE the room I mentioned above, it would have been impossible for anybody to move the table out of the way. After thinking it over for a while, I remembered that Misty wrote the Arrows trilogy before she wrote LHM... and therefore, used some creative license...like when the name of Griffon's Companion changes from the 1st book to the 3rd. Released means that the publisher ships orders to those stores that asked for it, not that it magically appears on the shelves of the store nearest you. Every book, from Michael Crichton's latest thriller to Misty's latest fantasy to the latest edition of Halliday and Resnick's introductory physics text goes through this. The fact Michael Crichton's books show up in more stores than Misty's which show up in more stores than physics texts is because people complain if they don't. So, if you want your local store to order the next Misty book for first run delivery, tell the owner "Please order to the next Misty book before it's released and me and my ten/twenty/fifty/a hundred undersigned friends will buy at least a copy each as soon as it gets here." >It does seem to be a shame to have to special order a new release. Censorship is burning books or passing laws that prevent libraries from carrying books or refusing to order a book for you. Unless the manager/owner is nuts or running a specialty store, no reasonable request that means increased business will be turned down. If you think that there's a market for an author's books (other than yourself), and your local bookstore owner doesn't believe you, collect a bunch of signatures from people who'd buy more books from the store if this author's books were carried. If the owner's excuse is that there's no space, offer to build extra bookshelves, but don't put the 'c' word out where it doesn't belong... -jenneke I *am* family. How could I not have family values? Yes, they were. In MPrice, it is mentioned that the focii are melded into a single sphere when the spell was done. That's the top of the Heartstone. As a matter of fact, no one except the LHM mages even seem to use mage focii. The Tayledras (I think Firesong in a few places) say that you have to make Heartsone energy your own before you use it. Wouldn't a mage focus as Vanyel described them make this a lot easier? The only way you can get Misty's books is to get them shipped from the States, because they weren't even printed here. The exception is that The Mage Wars books finally seem to be coming out here. I had to get The Winds shipped out and it is impossible to find copies of any of the others unless you are really lucky in a second hand book shop. It is a major pain is all I can say. -grumble- Sin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Aug 1995 18:40:06 +0000 From: "Lisa Kurahashi" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: no spoilers here Message-ID: <199508220637.XAA11683-+AT+-netcom10.netcom.com> > Date: Sun, 20 Aug 1995 10:53:39 +0100 > From: Stephanie Wukovitz > Well, as far as a "Compas Rose" at UCLA goes, no, none exists as far > as I know. Maybe its not the intellectual bastion of the world, but it is a decent place to hang out. Stephanie, if you'd like to visit, we're not too unfriendly. BTW, I've also been invited to Bible studies by complete strangers. Usually I get accosted in the bathrooms. kmlisa _______________________________________________________ Nondeterminism means never having to say you are wrong. I'd say it's not unreasonable to have spoiler warnings for the first month. I'm not saying the below-included message has spoilers, but before the discussion starts, I wanted to say something. I plan to go out and buy Rising this weekend. I bought Belgarath the Sorcerer last weekend since Rising wasn't available yet. I sure hope I can find Rising! I love it when two great books come out like this. However, there is an excellent pub, the Rochester Brew Pub, where one can find (on a Sunday night) a quite similar sort of environment, complete with a varying assortment of Minstrels and True Bards, especially during the summers when the RenFesties frequent the place. :) -- =============================================================================== | croaker-+AT+-cyber1.servtech.com | "I *HEARD* That!!!" | | Known to Reality as | -- Warrick Morgannen, | | Chris Nasipak |_________________ Archmage of Pittsburgh. | | http://www.servtech.com/public/croaker/index.html | | =============================================================================== GAT/CS: d? s+:++ a? I was rereading the second Winds book over the weekend and came across an interesting chat between Tre'valen (the Shin'a'in apprentice shaman) and Dawnfire (in her avatar form) where Dawnfire is talking about dreams/visions she had been having and has trouble explaining them to Tre'velen...anyways she talks about magic echoing back across space and time...actually it sounds like a summary of SW...anyone else remember this chat? The 1st time I read it I think it really didn't register at all... But I think it does indicate that the storms are not caused by someone from the present, if the Gods/Goddesses are worried about them.... Anyways, I thought it was interesting that Misty gave this hint about the future in the middle of the Winds series. I have been lurking in the background for several weeks now and trying to make my way through the archives.... Just wanted to comment that I've really enjoyed this group, nice diversion from the writing of my masters thesis, although I keep going back and reading Mistys Velgreth books...again and again and again and finding something new each time, usually made very curious from some comment posted that day....Not exactly assisting in the thesis work, but heck- it's fun TaTa Stormdancer ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 114 *********************************
