But from the title, it doesn't _have_ to end as it does. I have read other sequels called "The Last" something, and without the end that LHM has. And, it actually gives away a rather important point, in my opinion. About Stefen. _That_ is a thing you can't guess from the titles of the books, and as far as I can remember, it is told in the _Arrows_. Stefen's existence and his tie to Vanyel are mentioned, but another Herald (female) is also mentioned as Vanyel's helper, and Vanyel's character is just a bit, ah, different. Given that the story in _Arrows_ is a (known) novelization and given what I know of real novelizations and their tendency to pick a couple facts at random and add as many fallacies as they feel they need, I didn't find that _Arrows_ spoiled _LHM_ in any way. If anything, the first time I read _LHM_, I was eager to see which of the 'facts' in that novelization were actually true and which were the imagination of the writer. Then again, for me, getting there is more than half the fun, and I'd love to read fuller accounts of many stories we already know the endings to, like how Savil met Starwind, or the story of Sunsinger and Shadowdancer, or the story of the founding of Valdemar from Baron Valdemar's perspective, and so on. If Misty wrote these as short stories, would they be spoiled for you, because we've already been introduced to a version of the ending? -jenneke I *am* family. How could I not have family values? I wasn't sure whether to read The Black Gryphon before LHM or not, since I don't have the other books but now that I'm into Winds of Change I think I'll follow his suggestion and read it before Storm Warning. Although that will just delay SW further and I'm dying to get into it. However, given that I have forgotten a lot from the other books, I'm glad I decided to review the series. BTW, my husband first picked up Oathbound and we both read and liked it, as well as Oathbreakers (which I like better, I think. Oathbound is a little choppy.). I continued on with Arrows, but he couldn't get into it. He also has picked up a few of the Sword and Sorceress anthologies (NO WE DO NOT HAVE III!, he didn't start those until IV!! grrrrrr), and in the latest one (XII or XIII) there is a Tarma & Kethry story (co-authored with Lisa Waters, I think) titled "A Dragon in Distress" that is a cute little story . Just this summer, since getting my e-mail account here at work, I discovered a.b.ml and even more recently, this list. I think this is really cool! Oh well, back to work!! Zhai'helleva y'all!! It has a very "sequential" feeling - not one story like "Oathbreakers" but like you could read any chapter and understand it on its own. yes, that's right -- I'm back! First, forbidding this kind of postings will only lead to 2 things: It will attract more people, just because it is forbidden, and people get curious, or just wanna be rebellious. Second, By forbidding it, in a way, they win. Because by forbidding their postings, we open up for a system equal to the one they are defending. Anyone, no matter what opinion, should have the right to voice these, as long as they do not get too personal. > I hope they met with nothing but derision, as Julie > was right in that posting to as mentally open a group as the Lackey > newsgroup made them DESERVE to get slammed, but let's face it folk, > when you begin saying "This group" cannot have free speech, how long > before YOUR group is targeted?? That too is a problem. I mean, we say that nazism is bad, but then, many people feel that way about things _we_ think is right. I am not a nazi, I try to accept all people as they are, and respect their right to have opinions that differ from mine. I don't neccessarily accept their opinions, but then, I can't judge what is wrong and what is right. I just can say what _I_ think is right. It seems to me that they are the different opinions of two artists. Jody Lee has painted Altra differently than Larry Dixon. It won't be the first time this has happened. As for stripes, they are probally there, except that due to the fact that it's in B/W they're hard to see. :) > Am I crazy? You're here aren't you? > (Let me rephrase that . . .) Why should you bother to. You've already established the fact that we're all crazy. :) --Gyrfalcon =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. If anything, the first time I read > _LHM_, I was eager to see which of the 'facts' in that novelization > were actually true and which were the imagination of the writer. > This was a thread on a.b.ml not too long ago. There was an opinion there that we (the readers) are seeing into Talia's head as she imagines _herself_ in the story and as part of the action. So the female character may or may not have been part of the novelization. I know that I used to sometimes fantasize along a storyline with myself as a character, especially at Talia's age, and when the main character was the PERFECT MALE HERO (at least as portrayed).... I don't feel that that section of Arrows can be considered a spoiler, especially with all the clues to the ending that are sprinkled throughout the LMH trilogy itself. It does offer an interesting insight into exactly WHAT the "common" folk of Valdemar know of their history. Just my 0.02 worth!
