(p. 143 Magic's Pawn) I think that is very interesting when you take into account what happened to Vanyel. It could be foreshadowing on Misty's part, but I am not so sure. I wander if maybe Tylendal was supposed to be the last herald- mage, but when that didn't happen Vanyel stepped in to take his place. Just a thought, should I put on my flame/dart-proof suit now? The other thing that I was wandering about, is that 'Lendal clearly states that his relationship with Gala is one of inferior to superior. Is it just me or does this not seem like a normal relationship between a herald and his/her companion? When you take that into account with how he kept his still very much active bond with Staven a secret, I wander if their bond was not as strong as it should have been. Which leads me to my next question, could this have been part of the reason why he completely snapped? This could also be part of the reason that Gala cast him off. I wouldn't say that, but I can't help but think of the story Skif told about what he did to that spy and how Cymry helped him. Well just a couple of thoughts. I am sure that Ned at least will have a few comments. Like Kero would not have to take classes on warfare or stratagy. They would be redunant. The classes that the 'older' choosen would have to take would be ones that they had no experience in. So the amount of time that it would take to get your whites would depend on the type of experience you have. Sorry don't know anything about Teren's studies. Between Winds and By The Sword, several years have passed because Elspeth is a full Herald in Winds and still in training in BtS. Since Kero was so knowledgeable and mature already I expect her coursework requirements weren't quite as extensive as someone like Talia who was virtually ignorant of things outside her own people when she arrived in Haven. Perhaps that has something to do > with Talia being made a Sun-Priest, since she was Holderkin-bred? The Holderkin religion consisted of a dominating Male god (Possibly a version from Vkandis, splintered about fifty years (?) before Talia came about, and a subservient Female goddess ( I believe the name mentioned was kalanel or something like that.). They were expelled from Karse because during that time the goddess-consort was not a part of the official religion of Karse. And Talia was made a priest just because of her oh so bright and sunny disposition. --Gyrfalcon Excuse the poor joke, but I was just out watching All's Well That Ends Well. And the general atmosphere has infected me. :) =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ============================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Sep 1995 22:15:48 -0700 (PDT) From: "Kristin A. Oh, and if evidence on > Firesong&Andesha is coming from Storm Rising, please don't be terribly > specific. I still haven't read it. :( > Stefen states this theory in Winds of Fury but notes that it is Vanyel's. Well Vanyel when he *first* lifebonded was obviously in deep emotional pain, but Tylendel wasn't that stable either although he *appeared* to be in control up until Staven was killed - Tylendel's stability was fragile and it hinged on his twin bond more than he let on. Hence his twin's violent death completely unbalanced him and Vanyel was not strong enough to set him right. Vanyel ended up allowing himself to be *used* as Tylendel's instrument of revenge - ie, Tylendel drew on the lifebond to help him Gate. In Vanyel's *second* lifebonding it is quite clear that Stefen is the more stable of the two, although he is younger. At first Van is an authority figure to him. Later the "reason" for the lifebond is obvious. Stef was able to snap Van out of his killing rage after Leareth's servants gang raped him. If Stef had been just anybody, the pain-maddened Vanyel might have blown him away too. Van definitely needed someone to help stabilize him, and Heal him later. (Minor spolier here) Firesong/Andesha are NOT lifebonded. In Storm Rising a major plot thread hinges on this fact, as the two grow apart and Firesong reacts to the situation. Message-ID: <950924012428_27659327-+AT+-mail02.mail.aol.com> I really enjoy the SERRAted Edge series. Misty puts a very human face on some very unpleasant aspects of our society. It is too easy to tune out the evening news when it is covering yet another case of child abuse. (That could never happen to anyone I know!) They are not pretty but they end happily and do draw attention to the different avenues of help that are available. Plus, I think the characters are great and I enjoy the humor too. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Sep 1995 10:07:32 -0400 From: jhedge-+AT+-waterw.com (Jeanne Hedge) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: FS: Lackey Books in Hardcover Message-ID: <9509241407.AA10852-+AT+-water.waterw.com> LACKEY HARDCOVERS FOR SALE: FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED All are Hardcover (with dust jacket) US editions, in excellent condition (read once).
