As to Vkandis not being as likely to interfere if there was another Deity involved - in the case of the Empire, there isn't a Deity only a "God-Head", an Emperor, a mortal human. The Empire posed a significant threat to Karse and to the worship of Vkandis if it managed to assimilate Karse into the Empire - sufficient grounds I would imagine for Vkandis to interfere. It always seemed to be that the different Deities sort of have territories - like the Star-Eyed having little influence beyond the ranges of the Tayledras and the Shin'a'nin and therefore she created the Avatars who were able to work afar for her as in the case of helping An'desha in Hardorn. No, she does have four aspects - with each having their own primary "priests". I forget the order of whom goes with whom. Warrior with Kalenedral, Crone with Shaman ? I believe Tarma tells Kethry about this either while in the Tayledras forest after Kethry found out about Tarma's teachers or in the forest before getting even with Keth's brother, but I don't have the books on me right now. Can anyone think of a country name for the bit where the >Shin'a'in and Tayledras live? I remember area names, but not country >ones for them?) They don't consider themselves a country like the others we know like Valdemar, Karse, etc. The Shin'a'nin live on the (Dhorisa) Plains and the Tayledras in the Pelagiris (sp) forest. While the two groups are territorial about their lands - they are its guardians and protectors, I wouldn't consider them united enough to call them a country. As Elspeth noted, to them, it is their people who are important, and, since their Clans are migratory, their "nations" are migratory. They're sworn to protect knowledge, rather than just the Clan itself, I believe. (I miss my books.) But the Kal'enedral are sort of like...well, think Amazons, who are all sworn to the goddess. In one fashion or another, they're priests to themselves, rather than needing the Shaman to interpret for them. But you're right that the Kal'enedral aren't exactly priests -- the Moonpaths are only open to them at night, while the Shaman can find them at any time. That is exactly what I was getting at, but couldn't put into words. It was her experiences in being Captain that tipped the balance as it were. I also think the timing in the war with Hardorn was critical, from the Valdemaran perspective. By the time Talia and Dirk showed up in Rethwellan, they were ready to try ANYTHING, including mercenaries - which means they were pretty desperate, given the bad feelings left from the Tedrel Wars. Kero's Choosing cemented that aspect of the alliance (i.e. - if the Captain is a Herald, then the company can't be so bad, right?) Yes, there are. There is also a song called "Wind's 4 Quarters", from Firebird Arts and Music; I think Misty wrote it/sang it, but I'm not certain. I'm blanking on some of the words or I would quote a few stanzas, but it is a VERY good song...I strongly recommend it. There are two series of vampire books. One is about a vampire detective that series is Bloodlist, Lifeblood, Bloodcircle, Atr in the Blood, Fire in the Blood, and Blood on the Water. The other series is about a vampire in colonial american times. Those are Red Death, Death and the Maiden, and Death Masque. The second series is really awesome and interesting. But then I was a history major and I like colonial times. That the class this evening.
