The reason I'm asking is that now that I get lots of great letters, and my Mum gets only bills, she wants to find a group where SHE fits in! She likes Misty, but adores Eddings, Tolkien and Asimov. She's not computer literate (she can't even double click, and it takes her five minutes to move the mouse to the right spot), so please avoid list groups! *********************************************************************** -Chonni Brightwolf (Katherine Moll, student) University College of the Cariboo British Columbia, CANADA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Oct 1995 15:33:14 -0800 (PST) From: CHONNI To: mercedes-lackey list Subject: an author you might like... Message-ID: I'm glad so many people like Charles De Lint! Has anyone else read his book in Brian Froud's "Fairylands" series? It's very very good. I first picked up a de lint book because like me, it was canadian, and it can be very hard to get good canadian sf/fantasy. Which reminds me... I seriously recommend Guy Gavriel Kay, starting with, I think, "The Summer Tree". I adore books that make you want to cry (like all the MP books!) and this series definately did it for me. "Song for Arabornne" (pardon the spelling) is a good fantasy-medieval mix, if a bit grim at times. *********************************************************************** -Chonni Brightwolf (Katherine Moll, student) University College of the Cariboo British Columbia, CANADA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Oct 1995 15:44:38 -0800 (PST) From: CHONNI To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: survey results! It would be simpler to call up a water elemental and send it to the bottom of Lake Evendim. *grins*, We have already seen Air (Vrondi), Ice (Varrir), Fire (Sandaar) elementals written about in the LHM. I agree on the "Magic's Price" song -the melody grates on me, it's too bright and bouncy, in a way. My favorite, though, is "Shadow Lover", it's incredible...OTOH, it's not really as described in MPromise: it doesn't really have "otherworldly" chords. Does anybody like "Hero of Stony Tor"?! It's SO lovely: especially the bit about Nedran offering Van gold and slaves and power, and Vanyel's answers - and the verse "the wizard calls his demons, the demons he commands, and Vanyel, Herald Vanyel, only raises empty hands." All of my role- playing group, who generally wouldn't recognize a filk if it came and bit them on the nose, loved the song too. It seriously disrupts play, though. > > As for Lovers Lore and Loss... And we do know that the Shin'a'in were Urtho's people. The Kaled'a'in were the ancestral people that later split into the Shin'a'in and Tayledras (remember the history-carpet at Kata'shin'a'in??). The Kaled'a'in clans split up over the use of magic, those that rejected its use became the Shin'a'in who guarded the Plains and continued their horsebreeding program, the magic-users became the Tayledras who used their magic and bondbirds to guard and cleanse the lands deformed by the final blast in the war. > Err, strictly speaking, no. I had the impression that Urtho was given command by the other mages and nobles against Ma'ar when he (Ma'ar) took over the kingdom. I thought they were all either residents of that kingdom or allies. Was Urtho a feudal-type Lord as well as a Mage? > Yeah, I was kinda suggesting that his spirit was still kicking around > offering help as needed (eg, perhaps, the companions).. It IS possible, but I would have thought his spirit would have hung around the Plains?? HMMMMM. Just feeding the fire (heh-heh, pass the kindling over here.....) A very good book set during WWII dealing with occult attempts to stop Hitler and save England from invasion. Shouldn't be too much of a spoiler there. The main "working group" is of a pagan, ummm, persuasion , shall we say? It's very good (I just finished it not too long ago. The main character also appears in the third "Adept" book, briefly and he and Adam Sinclair work together in a short story that's just come out in an anthology titled "Tales of the Knights Templar". I found my copy of Lammas Night in the regular fiction section of the bookstore. Cecile ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Oct 1995 10:00:36 -0500 (CDT) From: "Cecile S.
