I read the TL,TW,&TW and Prince Caspian, but then got bogged down in the middle of Voyage of the Dawn Treader and stopped. However, I read the entire series when I was in fifth grade. I don't think I read Lloyd Alexander's book until 4th grade (different school, different library, and I still remember exactly where they were on the bookshelves). I am fairly certain that 'The Little Prince' was a book I read and had had read to me long before 3rd grade. Also the traditional cleaned-up fairy tales. I remember I has a record with a story called "King of the Golden River" (this was in the days before CDs and videos were available--do people realize these have only been around 10-15 years??) which I must have listened to dozens of times, about 3 brothers Hans, Schwartz, and Gluck. And an enchanted Mug. Is anyone else familiar with the story? I also had a record of a Disney story called "Misty the Mischievous Mermaid". In fifth grade, a read a lot of T. H. White (another author we haven't mentioned much) including "The Once and Future King". In middle school I started reading Susan Cooper, Anne McCaffrey and Nancy Springer, among others. I didn't start reading ML until winter break of my third year of college. Someone had loaned by Mom the Arrows trilogy. I read them in 2 or 3 days, then went to the store with my Chistmas money, and bought all three of them and all the LHM trilogy (I think Magic' Price had only just come out) and also Oathbreakers. This would have been December of '89. I had read them all 'by the time I returned to college. And I went to the only bookstore in my college town and ordered "Oathbound." Then I had to wait until BTS came out some time later. Somehow reading all of the stories associated with that mythology really got me fired up and into fantasy. I was exposed to sci-fi a bit later, by my dad carelessly :) leaving his books lying around when he was done--I think Asimov's Foundation series may have been some of the first, but my favorites of that genre will always be Heinlein. Dad must have done that just to get me hooked--he doesn't keep his books once he's done--takes them all right off to the used bookstores. Even though everyone in my family reads a lot, they always thought I was odd for keeping my favorites and re-reading them (yes, mom, the book *is* still interesting the second time around--and the third, and fourth, if you have the right book!) so I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one in the world with a huge library of sci-fi and fantasy. -Daria ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Nov 1995 15:13:42 -0800 From: wdjpej-+AT+-ix.netcom.com (William Jones ) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Casting characrers... But I got sent a book called 'The Dragonriders' (all three as one book) and I was off... just couldn't get enough... never will. When I was around 27 someone introduced me to the 'Chronicles of Narnia'. From there I was really on my own. You know, katherine kutz, david eddings, ru emerson, piers, robin mckinley, elizabeth moon an on an on an on infinitim.... But in all this I don't see anyone chatting about ML's Diana Tregare series...I think those stories are great as well. And I hope she continues. Read them all at least 12 times; I REALLY wanted to go to Narnia! Then there was Susan Cooper and Lloyd Alexander, McCaffrey for my tenth b-day (my mum bought me the trilogy) and L'Engle. I read The Blue Sword in grade 6 and was really pissed that the teacher had stopped me; i read it over adn over again, trying to memorize it since I had not seen it in book stores. I didn't discover misty till I was 17/18 - I'm 22 now, so it wasn't that long ago. *********************************************************************** -Chonni Brightwolf (Katherine Moll, student) University College of the Cariboo British Columbia, CANADA ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Nov 1995 21:12:57 -0800 (PST) From: CHONNI To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: RE: *quite* off topic Message-ID: On Thu, 2 Nov 1995, Rosario Holsen-Baker wrote: > Rutger Hauer!!!! AS for Talia...gee, if I wanted a Talia old enough for the Magestorm series, I'd suggest Nana Visitor (ST:DS9). Younger, like in the Arrows trike, though, is a problem. RE: Val Kilmer's butt. YES!!!!! I got hooked when "Stranger in a Strange Land" was required reading for a Lit class.... My Mom was horrified! Now it's my husband who rolls his eyes and makes snide comments after a library or bookstore jaunt..... That's okay... my kids are hooked, too, and they're the best-read kids in their classes - the teachers never have to push reading. I just got Shadow Stalker this weekend, and I LOVE IT! I was little wary at first, having never listened to that type of music before. As I listened to the beginning of "Windrider Unchained", I thought, "Okay, at least it wasn't a total waste of money." By the time I was halfway through the song, though, I was hooked. :) Now I can't get the songs out of my head. All day I've been hearing "Silver and amethyst/The colddrake hunts for prey/Its glowing eyes can hyp-no-tize/And steal your soul away" and "Challenge not this Web of Light/Oh mage of dark designs", not to mention many instances of "Vanyel, Herald Vanyel" in my head all day long! So far, my favorite songs are (in no particular order): Windrider Unchained Demonsbane The Colddrake and Hawk Brother Next, I plan on buying Heralds, Harpers, & Havok (I've found those lyrics interesting since I first read Arrows' Fall -- gotta hear "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night" :) ). I also want to buy one of the Vows & Honor tapes. Which one should I get -- "Oathbound" or "Oathbreakers"? At the time though, it didn't interest me too much. At that point, I was very into Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys. After a while these started to annoy me, so I started reading Star Trek books. I tried Narnia at about the same time, didn't really care for it that much (quick, where's the flame-proof suit ;) ). Some of my first fantasy was silly stuff, like Craig Shaw Gardeners' Ebenezum books, and Xanth (shudder). It was, scarily enough, the blurb on the back of Magic's Pawn that got me into Misty. The way I discovered this list was through Ian's web page (looked for Misty's name with Webcrawler and was shocked to get a hit). Also, when I was younger (8 or so) I read a lot of Juvenille fiction/ sci-fi/supernatural/mystery books. Like there was one mystery/supernatural series with a couple of kids sloving mysteries using an amazing chemistry set that a weird, mysterious old lady gave them. There was also a series about a ten year old (well, at death anyway) vampire. You know, that kind of stuff. We've only heard that the Companion/Herald dies soon after the bond is broken... Is it not a possiblitily that the Herald/Companion death-wills him/her self, as Keren almost did in Arrows of the Queen? Now here's another question: What would happen to a Herald who lost his/her Companion and survived? Would s/he still be a Herald or would s/he become a court official instead? Possibly s/he would be Chosen again, only as a non-bonded choosing?
