Would the Shin'a'in Swordsworn count? Although they're not born into it, the Swordsworn do have some kind of code of conduct/honor/pledges, even if it may be a very clanish thing. I also agree that since magic is so prevalent, knights would probably not enjoy high status because of their magical limitations (even Swordsworn have some magical/religious connections). fair skies, Irene ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Nov 1995 17:18:13 -0500 (EST) From: Mia Karen Sherman To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Two things Message-ID: > A: What does QED stand for? My take on the bardic-type abilities is that the "skill" part would correspond to "technique" i.e. physical coordination in playing instruments. I guess I think of it this way because my technique on the instruments I play (when I have more time :( ) is good but not phenomenal, but I always get comments about "tone" and "musicianship" and so forth, and seemed to pretty much win all my competitions that way. Probably in Velgarth I woulda been a Bard with the Gift and the ability to compose (I do a bit of that professionally), but not the skill part, if that makes sense. (I figure musicianship and ability to captivate listeners in real life = Bardic Gift in Velgarth) Hmmm, come to think of it, has anyone else noticed that there really doesn't seem to be much purely instrumental music in Velgarth, just vocal music and a few dances? "Applied" music so to speak (kinda like Valdemaran science, actually, as someone brought up long ago here or in the newsgroup). Personally I find the vast majority of vocal music massively annoying, so this sticks in my craw to be honest...anyone else feel vaguely annoyed about the types of music we *don't* see much of? -Stephanie who, as a really old person, shouldn't keep doing these all-nighters :-) P.S. Speaking as one with perfect pitch, I would have to say it is, perhaps, a small part of technique/skill, but certainly not all that useful; I happen to agree with Kero's opinion of it :-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Nov 1995 22:55:39 -0500 (EST) From: Jennifer Broekman To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Music on Velgarth Message-ID: On Tue, 21 Nov 1995, Stephanie Wukovitz wrote: > Hmmm, come to think of it, has anyone else noticed that there really > doesn't seem to be much purely instrumental music in Velgarth, just > vocal music and a few dances? I hadn't noticed, to be honest. Certainly we do see purely instrumental 'tafelmusik' a few times. At banquets and the like, for example. And certainly whatever Stefen played during Audiences can't have been either vocal or dance music. If you're going by the tapes, my guess is that Misty puts what she's better at on them, namely vocal stuff. (Disclaimer: I don't own any of the tapes, I'm just going by the comments made around here.) -jenneke jsb-+AT+-phantom.com new .sig in development ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 01:42:54 -0500 From: dstorrs-+AT+-crossover.com (David K. The reason has been that AOL's mail system appears to have gone completely tits-up (anyone on AOL who receives this and can send me any information as to what the hell _is_ going on there would be popular). Hence I came in yesterday morning to find approximately 2000 mail messages sitting here and waiting to go out, from Friday onwards. Most of 'em going to AOL. Hmm. The consequence of this has also been the mail spool filling up with 'Cannot deliver message for three days' mail. Thank you, AOL. Things should be back to semi-normal quite shortly. I hope. Cheers Mel. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Nov 1995 08:44:14 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine Osborne To: mercedes lackey list Subject: ;) Message-ID: I got the CD of Shadow-Stalker yesterday! It was *so* good! I love it! I think my favorites were Windrider Unchained and Web of Light and Shadow-Stalker and the one about him being the Hero of Stony Tor (I'm drawing a blank on the name ;) I am now about to commit sacrilege. (dons flame-proof suit) I was disappointed by Shadow-Lover (ducks and protects head from flying tomatos) I think its the best set of lyrics Misty ever wrote and I was ready for a phenomenal song -- and it wasn't. For one thing, I was expecting a minor key, given the way Vanyel (gotta start pronouncing the name differently now ;) describes it. I thought it would be haunting, and it wasn't. Also, there was that funny little break at the end of some lines and then her voice stopped singing and did something weird. Also I agree that Magic's Price wasn't that hot. I could have lived with the tune, but her voice trying to do Stefen sounded whiny and kept cracking. But most of the time her voice was so incredible! I loved it! I loved the album! (Rosario is figuratively hovering over me, waiting for her copy ;) It was so great, and now I can listen to it while I read Vanyel-books ;) I\/ Catherine Osborne "After great pain, I\/ Sundancer a formal feeling comes." They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day.
