That was, I believe Van said, possibly due to Learath's meddling, because Randale's father was a Herald-mage. Actually, that's why people have church weddings and commitments ceremonies and wear wedding bands. Legal marriage confers much more than public acceptance and understanding: it comes with a whole load of mutual rights and responsibilities, including child custody, visitation rights, default inheritance, power of attorney, etc. IMO, Treven and Jisa's decision to get a priest to witness their vows was no more rational or mature than Shavri's reaction, but also no less understandable. -jenneke jsb-+AT+-phantom.com new .sig in development ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Dec 1995 13:50:23 -0600 (CST) From: Tina Newman R To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Stefan and Gala Message-ID: On Thu, 30 Nov 1995, Starhawk wrote: > Kerry (mealink-+AT+-syd.au.swissbank.com) wrote: > Hmmm. I was under the impression that consort (when referring to a member of the royal family) meant the non-ruling spouse of a ruling queen. That is, when a queen marries (and retains the rule), her spouse is called her consort, rather than her king. This is why Elizabeth II's husband is Prince Phillip, rather than King Phillip. In RL, this terminology is only used for the spouses of queens, but in Valdemar, it seems to be used for both. In any case, it refers to a legal spouse, not lover/partner/significant other/bedmate/lifebonded/etc. -jenneke jsb-+AT+-phantom.com new .sig in development ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Dec 1995 13:38:48 -0800 (PST) From: CHONNI To: mercedes-lackey list Subject: here it be! That means, that had Elspeth remained heir, and married for political reasons, her husband would be a Consort unless he was Chosen. Though this whole debate raises an interesting question. When the twins grow up, and Selenay & Daran have died, who becomes Monarch? Do they both? are they 'queen' and 'king'? And what about their spouses? What if say, the twins marry nobly born Heralds? I was under the impression that one of them will be Chosen by Rolan, and the other will become King/Queen. The one who is MOH would then drop out of the succession, sort of the way younger sons did RL or Prince/Duke Nigel does in the Deryni novels (ie., they and their kids only inherit if the other line dies out completely). -jenneke jsb-+AT+-phanton.com new .sig in development ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Dec 95 19:36 PST From: urtho-+AT+-stargazer.netshop.net (Kyle Matheson) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Can't handle the mail.
