Well, I went through all the books I could find at my public library (still have to try the college), and only one had any references to gaki. Heck, only one had any references to oriental mythology...anyways, it clearly pointed out that the gaki were lost spirits, relatively weak, though capable of hurting people, though I don't recall them eating souls... My theory is that like the proverbial killer bunny (grin), or any other relatively harmless beastie, the author can take something out of folklore and make ti really interesting. Ie; anyone else watch an incredibly bad horror movie called leprechan? I still shudder; not from the suspense, but from all the poorly understood folklore! > one of the most fun things i know of for people interested in japanese folk > lore and creatures is "vampire princess miyu", my favorite japanamation > series (only 4 episodes that i know of.) it is absolutely wonderful! I absolutely agree! and I'm glad I'm not the only one who's only seen four episodes - I wondered if my video store was simply not buying them any more! *********************************************************************** * Why would I want my mind back? IIRC, it wasn't Arachne's mother who boasted about it. That was Andromeda's mother, boasting about her beauty, and Nike? boasting about her daughters. And, again IIRC, Athena tore Arachne's picture apart not because she was jealous, but because she wove mocking pictures of the gods.
