Wasn't Athena the goddess of wisdom and warfare? I thought Hera and Vesta (?) were more connected with the hearth and home. And like all other such providers, they were dependent on a few things from the outside world; water, communications, and electricity, for instance. And it came to pass that one day there was a power cut in the area that we mortals call Finchley, in North London. And there was much weeping and wailing, yea, even gnashing of teeth, because the power did remain off for several hours, and the support staff were mightily stressed and tired of people calling to ask why they could not access their accounts. And lo, into this came one Mel, who is called Proprietor of Herald Information Systems, and she backed up her machine, and saw that it was good. And she rebooted her machine, and the machine did appear to hang; and most stressed was she, and swore mightily. And in the fullness of time [ed: about an hour and a half] did it become clear that the machine was not hanging, but that it was waiting, seemingly forever, for the machine at the other end of the leased line to give it instruction. And Mel did ring the leased line support number, and inquire why her machine and the other machine had had a falling out, and why they would not speak one unto the other? And he that answered said unto her that everything was down in Finchley, and that Eastern Electricity, who supplied the electricity that was the lifeblood of the ISP, would be first against the wall when the revolution came. And Mel spake words of relief, and begged that she might be added to the members of the firing squad at the time of fullness. And lo, at half past the hour of six did the power in Finchley return, and the machines would once again speak one unto the other; mailboxes were once again filled, IP packets were exchanged in great numbers, and there was much rejoicing in the land. Thus endeth the Book of 18th December 1995. [ed: Yesterday was the Day from Hell as far as anything network-related went. Hopefully we will have no more like it.
