Does anyone know anything about it? (I'm starting to work through all of the digests in the archive, so I apologize if this is old news -- if so, please refer me to the appropriate date and I will go read quietly in my corner.) Thanks, Cindy D. ------------------------------ Date: 28 Dec 95 00:15:16 EST From: "David J. This is my first posting. With a little luck and the blessing of Mistress Internet, you actually received it. The Silver Gryphon is coming this Jan. for those of you not yet informed. The "teaser" tells of a "nameless horror" that stalks the children of Skandranon and Amberdrake when they become stranded in the wilderness. I was wondering if maybe this terror is a pack of Storm-warped makaar. Most of them would have been quite close to the blast sites, and it's quite likely many would have been distorted by the blast. However, some would have survived, and many would have been affected like the animals in the Storm series. And (my old English teachers would kill me if they found out I was starting sentences with "and") what of those that were not affected by the blast? Once freed of Ma'ar's coercions, they may in fact become more amicable, perhaps even forming working families. Well, that's enough chatter for now. Here goes! How do you think such countries as the Eastern Empire, Karse, and Hardorn came about? They had to start somewhere, and I'm sure they didn't start with the same tribes of ppl, otherwize there wouldn't be such diversity... I wonder what became of the Black Kings tho... I always had the impression that the Black Kings were too civilized to come up where the magical rules had been so skewed that everyone was a savage. Cindy D. I guess I'm not a total idiot. I gave Tammy Harris the address to Queen's Own the other day. For those of you who don't know, it's a fan letter for Misty. It contains info on release dates for new books, pen pals, local fan chapters, and conventions. For those interested, the address is: Queen's Own PO Box 132 Shiloh, NJ 08353 Send in eight bucks (check, money order, or postage stamps), and you get a year's subscription. Send a SASE and get the latest issue for free. Also, in response to the response to yesterday's posting, I was referring to the makaar, not to the humans in Ma'ar's empire. I think they mostly behaved as they did because Ma'ar used magical coercions to control them. On top of that, he no doubt told them hideous lies about Urtho and his gryphons. Released from those coercions, they would become more rational. Well, Happy New Year and stuff, I guess. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Dec 1995 14:45:42 -0600 From: "Robert A. Probably these were Ma'ar's = mercenaries. Hardorn was probably founded by whatever people were left = in the area after the Mage Storms (although possibly they were refugees = from the Eastern Empire, much like the Valdemerans). It's entirely = probable that Karse was founded by some of Urtho's people who were left = in the area. After all, their religous books list the "good" creatures = to be found in nature, to include the gryphons. It's certain that none = of Ma'ar's people would have thought of gryphons as good. At the end of Storm Warning, when they group is at Urtho's Tower, we're given a clue that the peolpe of White Gryphon still interact with the Black Kings. It's when they realize that the Kaled'a'in language has shifted. IIRC, it was Firesong who said something like, You thought tha just because you were among a people who do not change, neither would you." This obvioulsy refers to the Black Kings. It won't be worth reading, but I will at least have finished it. I can't wait until the others return, then I can get thirty messages at a time again! . 8>) Bye for now, Whiteraven Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful After all, I'm not. ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 283 *********************************
