So I shall share a tale of whoa to help innocent newbies from losing their heads... Long ago (1-3 months) in the sightless void called Email, a group of like minded folks came together, following the storyteller known as Misty, in a halfway world between Earth and Velgrath. While looking to share their own stories and lives, another teller of tales was mentioned. And this teller was the cause of much twitching, eyerolling and groans amoungst those who had left behind his youthful and punnish stories in a quest for Great Characterization, Good Prose and Mature Humour. And this teller was called by the name of Piers Anthony, and many swore to avoid future banality and coarse humor, which meant forgoing all Xanth novels. This saddened some poor misguided souls who secretly followed the Way of Xanth, and informed on those who no longer revered the Pun, and who did not keep the Adult Conspiracy. And so began the galactic thumb war betwixt the minions of Xanth (the fearsome men in white) and the motley group of free spirits who swore to defend Good Jokes, and the Fringes of Sanity. Seriously though, I myself recall Xanth fondly (though I'm glad to leave it to recalling), and am safe from the men in white for 2 reasons; Phereze my Companion and a dusty copy of THE VISUAL GUIDE TO XANTH. And if you want to read the original men-in-white jokes, ask me, or Mat or Gryfalcon; I know I have them somewhere! *********************************************************************** * Why would I want my mind back? However, I digress, Treven went into whites before he was ready because the situation demanded that he be seen to be a herald. I would say, (as others have no doubt before me) that Kero was needed, and needed to be seen as "official" - hence into whites before the schooling she is moaning about having to do (at the end of BTS) is finished. Re-read Vows and Honour (or whatever - my links are down so I can't access the Lackey archives and get proper titles) - the first Tarma/Kethry novel - on Saturday - I'd forgotten how good it was, and how informative it is about Gods/Hawkbrothers/shin'a'nins (sp??). I have also recently re-read (for the nth time) Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana - this has to be (D scurries behind her parapet, and prepare for instant flame down) one of the best books ever written. It improves with each reading, has some soul wrenching moments of sadness and loss, spreads stupid cheesy grins across my face at other moments, and doesn't go for the tidy "happy ending for all" option so many authors do. I think I'm trying to say that I recommend it! (A warning - don't try to make sense of the prologue - it comes, but slowly, and the names used there do not appear in the main book for some time). Am currently trawling my way through "Wizards First Vow" (first something anyway) - being pushed in the UK. It really, strongly reminds me of something else, but I can't catch it - makes for an unsatisfying read anyhow. Anyone else read it and pinned down it's read-alike? Snap out of it man! There, feel better? BTMIW! --Gyrfalcon =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ============================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jan 1996 09:18:38 -0800 (PST) From: "Patrick S. It's not my fault! I only wanted to comment on "Elvensteeds?". Now, I may have a bad memory, but I dont think I EVER read anything about elves in the Valdemar series (although the only other book I read from her besides the Valdemar series is The Elvenbane, but that didnt mention them either). So, could you explain?
