I've read _far_ too many books in my time where the reader knows -- or is told -- everything about the world, the scene, the characters (any book which contains the phrase "As you know, " is a prime culprit). Stefen (pick one spelling and stay with it, Mel) and Vanyel obviously knew the joke already, would Stefen really tell it again? If he did so, wouldn't Vanyel have been likely to say "yeah, yeah, you told me that one last week"? And no, I can't think of a joke which would lead to that punchline. (I know this was tangentially discussed some months ago >re the Valdemarans fighting gryphons as mentioned in Arrows.) Here's a very radical thought. Let's see if we can look at the conflict from a different point of view. Ma'ar was evil from our viewpoint, i.o.w. we are set up on Urtho's side, to consider Urtho the "good" guy. However, throughout the time we spend learning about Ma'ar, including later on through Falconsbane, there is the real possibility that Ma'ar was just a guy protecting his turf. Urtho thought he was right. Ma'ar thought he was right. Maybe Ma'ar's methods were not the most "clean", but then again, Urtho did send Skandranon with a weapon of mass destruction, essentially a nuclear device, to take out the enemy and anyone within leagues of him. We learn through Andesha that Ma'ar was sane, that he was very protective of his people, and cared for them. It appears as though he lost a little humanity every time he took over one of his descendants, just as a serial killer would lose a little humanity every time *he* kills again. Anyone else? A couple of hours a day spent learning politics and religion, regional stuff. The rest of the time Kero is essentially Head of Security, Daren is Consort. Kero *had* to be put in whites, she had an entire mercenary force with her, she had to be in charge of them, she had to be in a strong position to advise the council in matters of the war and future security. The Council is *not* a bunch of Heralds, it's a mixture, and the non-Heralds, perhaps even some Heralds, would never listen to a student in greys. Kero was ready in every way, save a few hours of instruction in local ways. She didn't need to go out on circuit, like someone else said, that would never be part of her job! >On another topic, has anyone else noticed the vast difference in >Herald training between Vanyels and Talia's day. Still, I do not remember Vanyel taking any classes in law >or any of the other classes Talia had to take! Ah but several hundred years have gone by, right? And when Vanyel was a student, all we saw was Herald-MAGE training. What were the rest of the Heralds being taught? And Vanyel did go to classes in Bardic Collegium with Heraldic students. So Heraldic students were taking classes, just as Talia does. But a Herald-Mage needs a mentor, someone to show him/her the ways of magic. And that isn't taught in a classroom, it's taught in the Workrooms, usually one on one. And in Talia's time, there were far more students than there seem to be during Van's time. So all this adds up in my mind to the fact that over time any education process seems to get more rigid or structured, and that's what happened here. When there are no Herald-Mages, who need specialized (tutoring if you will) instruction, you have a uniform course of study for all your students. I disagree here, though I'll try not to get entangled in debate about the uniforms (I lent out my BTS...). I'd say that upholding the laws isn't the Heralds primary (or even secondary) function. I think it's been mentioned that Valdemar has judges and magistrates (or something that serves those functions). Montesquieu would have a fit at Valdemar's government otherwise (Think about it: the same group of people makes the laws, enforces them, and passes sentences .) I'd say that the Heralds primary duty is to provide a link between the Crown and the people. The Heralds don't judge except in emergencies. They don't arrest people for crimes. Secondarily, I think they function as an elite corps in external matters (diplomats, assassins etc.) -Seanna the law student ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jan 1996 16:11:31 GMT From: STOKES J <95662014-+AT+-mmu.ac.uk> To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: re- myriad subjects Message-ID: Date: Tue, 9 Jan 1996 03:22:18 GMT Reply-to: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk From: Becky Anne Christensen To: 95662014-+AT+-mmu.ac.uk Subject: Re: re- myriad subjects On Tue, 9 Jan 1996, Ashke wrote: > > > On Sun, 7 Jan 1996, Jerald (Jerry) Anbinder wrote: > > > > > > > > And on antoher note, reincarnation theory generally tends to agree that we > > reincarnate with the same group of people who we have 'unfinished business' > > with...since we have no idea if Vanyel is a 'first lifer' I suppose it's > > possible that we are talking about the prince of darkness and the prince of > > light reincarnating over and over again to fight the ultimate battle... > > > > Okay, so it's a little far fetched, but hey, it's a thought... > > > > Aerin > > Yours Truly > > > > Jerry Anbinder > > > > > Want one even more far fetched????? They gather around the bell because it is easier to be together at a time like this, and because it is easier to ring the bell when looking at it. It's their expression of their emotions. But I can see the comic element to this, a bunch of companions running to get to the bell. Remember though, that Vanyel knew that at least one person died before the bell rang, so it's not instantaneous. So the bell doesn't ring for, say, 5 minutes, or 1 minute after the death. Enough time for the Companions to recover enough to ring the bell, as tribute to the deceased and to let everyone know what happened? Second point: When you said "Tylendel and Van first get together and have sex" it just sounds, well, crude to me. I don't think either of them are deserving of this description. In my opinion, what they had between them was much more than just sex. But, that is my thoughts. You wear a Tempest t-shirt to work, and attempt to explain what exactly Celtic Rock is! 2. You look at your CD selection and realize that most of your favorite stuff is Misty related. 3. You look at your bookshelf and find that Misty has taken over an entire shelf, doublestacked, and finally surpassed McCaffrey. 4. You desperately wish that Misty, would come out with a series of Valdemar related P.C. games, like Ray Feist did with his Universe! Wouldn't it be awesome to play in Valdemar! You must prove yourself, sort of, you must meet a bunch of requirements, earning x number of points, and then you can become a Herald. I'm still working on it, but I'm not making much progress :( Just not spending any time on it. I'm trying to finish a short story about my character, which would give me enough points to become a Tayledras. Then I want to work on my Herald persona. Speaking of which, has anyone here got persona's of different sexes? Or is everyone who has one in the "official" fanclub always stuck to their own sex? Just curious. I tend to stick to being female in whatever persona's I may create, and I was wondering if others are less... conservative? This is NOT a formal poll. I'd just as soon not get dozens of messages but if anyone wants to respond to the list, I'm sure others would be interested, and this is VERY Misty related. Someone has said before that the topic of the E-Mail message should relate to the content. Does "the bells, the bells (esmerelda)" really relate to this? I'd like to start a new thread to vote on the most popular Misty book and the worst and best Piers Anthony book, but I don't know how to start a new thread (well, I do sort of) but I don't know where to send it? To listproc-+AT+-herald.co.uk? To mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk? Where? Someone! Please help me! I'm going slightly mad..(or maybe i'm just insane) Anyway, if someone could tell me WHERE to send the message to start a new thread, I'd be happy, and maybe a little less insane. So, if anyone could cut it down and still have it make sense, please do. I'm not good at that sort of thing. I tend to just cut it ALL out, and that wouldnt be good. So, I would say that the Incarnations of Immortality is acceptable, but Xanth? (shudder!). The only book from Xanth that didn't make me bored out of my mind was the first one, and even that wasn't too great. I'm not even going to try to remember the name (it would be blasphemy to mention it on Mistys list). So, I can say that Xanth is...well...what can I say? (how about "immature, pun-filled, badly written, filled-with-weak-characters, and no plot beyond the first one" books). There. I've said it. I bashed Piers Anthony. So, that's my opinion on Piers Anthony and his books. Anyone else want to add anything? Please do. -Mannaheim ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jan 1996 13:20:51 -0500 (EST) From: EGLESTON-+AT+-GROVER.BPL.ORG To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: re: acronyms Message-ID: <960109132051.f4e-+AT+-GROVER.BPL.ORG> Two more for the collection: CUL for "see you later" TTFN for "ta ta for now" On live connections, I've also used CIP for "Come in please" and a line of GBGBGB, etc, for "your transmission is garbled" Yoicks! and Away!
