Sigh, I hate to disagree (tell that to my mother), but I found that the 
Paks trilogy was way too detailed; if I wanted to know that much about 
fighting, I'll take a history course...  I loved _By The Sword_ far more 
cuz it cut out all of the, for me, boring campaign details and stuck with 
the plot.  It rather fondly reminded me of _Oathbreakers_.  OTOH, I do 
like Elizabeth Moon's writing, but I'll stick to _Hunting Party_ & co.

And re: Crown of Swords
  I don't know when it's coming out, but my library (bless'em!) has put 
an order in for at least 3 copies (books this popular are always ordered 
in multiples), and I'm 8th on the waiting list.  Now to order in _Rise of 
a Merchant Prince_...

Oh, and to those who asked me for a copy of the BWTHMIW joke; I'm working 
on it, I'm working on it <grin>

    But still, Ortho never mentions a spell on his descendents. That is 
what allows Maar to come back. Like I said before, if Urtho even knew 
about the spell, he would have warned everyone, and possibly found a way 
to counter it. Urtho also doesn't seem like the kind of person that would 
take someone's body over like Maar did.

i haven't read the Winds series in a little while but somehow Silverfox doesn't
really stand out in my mind and i don't remember thinking "ALERT!  LIFEBOND WITH
FIRESONG!"  however, at the end of WoFury, let me quote Firesong:
	"It's all right, An'desha.  It's all right now... You are safe now, and
we will always be here to help you.  *I* will always be here to help you..."
<end of chapter>  seems sort of prophetic.

i haven't read Storm Rising, but there's a thought that runs through my mind,
which is that perhaps Firesong is only going to function as a healer for
An'desha.  i don't have SW with me but i know that An'desha talks a lot about
Firesong being very gentle and patient with him and trying to heal him... which
could go either way.  but at the end of WoFury, right before the quote i just
gave you, Firesong hears An'desha's sobs and thinks they're like those made by
Liam (Liam being a young boy who was raped, i believe, and Firesong healed him)
so perhaps that was foreshadowing.  then again, maybe not.  i'm sure you have
all figured out by now that i really don't know what i'm talking about :>
please, no spoilers, as i haven't read Storm Rising.

	Well, I think that he won't ever lifebond, and has a strong 
lovebond the An'desha. I remember in one of the books Elspeth talking to 
An'desha and was telling him that Firesong cares for him even more than 
he likes to admit. I can't recall if she said Firesong loved him though. 
There was never that kind of relationship with Silverfox, they just hit 
it off real well. It seems like a "WOW, something new!" kind of reaction 
between Firesong and Silverfox.

It's basically all there - someone mentioned the joke between Stefan and
Vanyel when they first get together where Stef says "Acres and Acres and
it's all *mine*" (actually it's only a punchline) and that someone asked
if anyone knew what the joke was.

Mel was basically saying, "No.. but I don't think we need to know.. it's
nice that the author doesn't feed us everything and that there are references
that aren't explained to the reader.."

I sorta wandered off into the realms of how hard this was to do from the
point of view of someone writing..

Hope that clears it up.. (probably not, but I can only try).
(Y'know, it'll be interesting if you get a message from Mel explaining it
 and she thinks it was something completely different - do tell me if it
 happens!). :)

My apologies if it came out that way (no pun intended.. oh all right, maybe
just a tiny accidental one) - I know S&M is supposed to be about bonds of 
trust and all that sort of thing - but I was referring to your use of the 
word 'sadistic' which has different connotations from sadomasochism. (I 
think..)

Besides, I've know a few SM people as well and I've also read Elf Sternberg's
Pendor-related _Journal Entries_ which tangentially involve the light
side (in the sense of light-positive, dark-negative) of SM.

I wouldn't hesitate to put Ma'ar & Co's practices under the dark-side 
category (though actually, I might just hesitate to put them under the
category at all, but that's a whole new issue).

Mmmm, I wouldn't necessarily agree with that.. Firesong was looking for
physical comfort, had been celibate for some time and like-it-or-not was
enough of a healer (and egotist) to probably subconsciously be flattered 
by having An'desha dependant on him.

Van was supposed to be better looking, makes you wonder just how good-looking
Van must have been), single and willing to provide comfort and physical and
emotional support.. That sort of near-dependancy can easily be mistaken in
the short term. (And in the short term I can't see much difference in the
outward signs between infatuation and a lifebond.. Looked at very very 
cynically, one might even say a lifebond is just an infatuation of both
parties that can't wear off..).

Of course, you have to read these comments as written by someone who,
much as he might like to be, isn't the type to lifebond. Lovebond yes,
lifebond no. (Go Silverfox!)

I agree though, Misty probably changed her mind.. :)


Side note: Is there anyone else who didn't like the picture of Firesong
towards the end of SR as a limp-wristed effeminate? (I assume it's Firesong
though the chapter pics were only loosely related to the chapter they 
prefaced..)
