Oh yes.. I thought of that as I was writing and meant to caveat it - that it didn't work its way into popular fiction until Tolkein.. Actually I guess that's sort of inane anyway as Tolkein fanatics^H^H^H^H^H^H^H fans will tell you that there wasn't fantasy fiction until he came along anyway. > (I thought most of the cowboys usually rode off intact, didn't they? not > quite the same final sort of flavour...) Oh no.. the head hero generally did, but it's standard practice for the pardner or one of his close friends/cronies to get killed - it provides the motive for the "Now this is personal.." type response. Quite a final sort of flavour (though my gung-ho bro wouldn't agree with me..) - check out some of the Zane Grey type endings.. Cheese, Kerry.. Patrick answered this mainly, but the Empire was founded by Mercenaries.. Odds are quite good that they came from Ma'ar's forces and their ruthless philosophies tend to reinforce that. Remember, it'd only take one low-level spy, heck, even a mage spying on Urtho's camp to realize that they were fleeing like baby quail (ie in every direction) - and it'd be pretty obvious that they weren't fleeing from Ma'ar's troops. It's also possible that they were Ma'ar's troops pulling back from the supposed wave of devestation that would come when Urtho died (there was plenty of time for them to get notification between Urtho getting poisoned and Ma'ar kamikaze'ing.. The destructive device Urtho sent could well have thrown their Gate off course (and they wouldn't know until they went through) when it exploded.. > IIRC Urtho even said something along the lines of "If > I could just talk it out with him, he'd see that killing innocent women, > children, and even baby gryphons is wrong, and then be a nice guy." > Personally, I prefer Skan's method. With McCaffrey's books (I own them all, I still say this..) start from the beginning and read until you get sick of them.. :) Personal favourites are her early stuff.. To Ride Pegasus - a must-read - I'd say the best thing she's written. Dragon-Song, Dragon-Singer - read the rest of the dragon series if you get addicted.. Get Off the Unicorn - has some great shorts relating to _To Ride Pegasus_ The Rowan. Co-authored stuff: - Any of the Ship novels.. (don't really worry about The City Who fought.. - I haven't read the latest out-in-hardback-only ship novel). - The Sassinak series (It's quite good..) (Doesn't Anne ever get sick of the young-girl-thrown-into-slavery idea?) Can't think of too many others that I'd plug.. (I still read them, I just wouldn't recommend buying them..) We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Now that you mention it, somewhere it *does* say that Ma'ar had some permanent Gates, but I *definitely* remember it being stated that permanent Gates were Urtho's own private innovation (one that he didn't even teach to his own mages.. or couldn't perhaps since they were only Adepts and both Ma'ar and Urtho were Sorceror-Adepts / Adepts++). So I guess either Ma'ar captured them - unlikely in the extreme - if Urtho created them, he should be able to detonate them from *any* distance.. or it's a tiny inconsistency.. Just a side-note - for the new people on the list - the reason I quote my address in my sig all the time is because a lot of people's mail readers aren't sophisticated enough to realize who sent the message to the list originally (and hence they can't reply to the individual rather than the list). Mat accmjt-+AT+-vaxc.hofstra.edu http://ada.hofstra.edu/~mtimme47/ I think God invented snow just to annoy us :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jan 1996 01:45:51 -0500 (EST) From: Lee Bromberger To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Many ML fans like Anne McCaffrey Message-ID: Debbi wrote that she suspected that many ML fans also have shelves dedicated to Anne McCaffrey and wanted to know is she right or is she right? I think Debbie is definately right. For me, I discovered Anne McCaffrey first and fell in love with her Dragonsong/Dragonsinger books, and then all her Dragonriders of Pern series. She also has written some other books that are not science fantasy but are still wonderful such as The Lady, Stitch in the Snow, The Mark of Merlin and one other that takes place in Ireland-I forgot the name of it but it's about an American and her twins who go to Ireland for holiday to look into an inheritance. Does anyone remember the name? Then I discovered ML with the Magic's Promise, Pawn and Price series (I'm not sure if I have them listed in the proper chronological order or not but the LHM series is what drew me in to ML's writings and now I'm hooked!!! I don't have to time to be hooked but I'm sure my teachers will be happy and accomodating when I ask for extensions on my papers because I've been reading ML books and reading everyone's comments on this list! Not. Reality can be soooo cumbersome. Oh well. I have managed to read one book other than ML. Some of you asked for recommendations for other books/authors to read. I highly recommend a book titled "THE MAGIC AND THE HEALING" by Nick O'Donohoe. I liked it so much, after taking it out of the library several times, I finally broke down and bought it. Now I am trying to squeeze it into my very limited space in between my Misty Lackey books and my Anne McCaffrey books. Well, I guess I've babbled longer than I anticipated, longer than I thought I might ( I'm not sure babbling and anticipating really fit in the same sentence , I mean if babbling is sort of mindless or mindful without any particular thought path, can its end really be anticipated!?,) and I know you have enough to read already so I will bring my babbling under control. Take care. Renee, it is your ambivalence that keeps you attached to the list. Your computer sends one message (to leave) but your feelings (your gift of empathy must be strong to have counteracted the written message!) say you don't want to leave. Gound and center to get both desires under control and then you may get your wish, your true wish. You know the Shina'in proverb, be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. Didn't she write 'Princess of Flames'? That's one of my annual re-reads - along with ML (naturally), AMcC, The Prince of Hed trilogy (Patricia McKilip I think) which is seriously ace, Robin McKinnley's Blue Sword/Hero & Crown (her newish one 'Deerskin' is also excellent) - hey look at all these L's & M's - maybe my problem is that I never found A - K and N - Z in the bookshops?! Similar to Cap'n Cut'n'Paste's (wow - 4 's in a row - now what is _that_ a sign of?) option actually - I prefer the destructive "delete out what you don't want" to the more creative "paste in what you do" approach.
