I did the same thing with the dragons and riders from McCaffrey's books. An example is: Lessa-Ramoth(gold) Weyrwoman of Benden Weyr, Ninth Pass An example from Mistys books would look like: Selenay-Companion Karyo, Queen of Valdemar , date of reign or app. date of birth . They could then be alphabetized for easy reference. Just my two cents. Hope it was some help. So the question >is, >why did Urtho not act against Ma'ar? I think because of the potential for destruction. Urtho was obviously a good person, but he wasn't willing to wage war to win at any cost. He didn't use weapons and options that were available......because the cost was too high. At the end, Urtho knew he was dying, and that his tower would react violently to his death. He gave Skan the box and said WAIT...(presumably until the magic forces stirred up by Urtho's death had quieted and it would be safe to use the box offensively against Ma'ar). But Skan lost his head, and had to do it NOW. When Urtho opened the gate into Ma'ar's throne room, he couldn't believe that Skan was there with the box. I think Urtho had an idea of the destructive effect the combined blasts would have. The two explosions created the Shin'a'in Plains (explosion crater) and Lake Evendim, which looks to be the relative size of the Great Lakes in the US. Many creatures were mutated. The fabric of the world was changed so much that 1500 (?) years later, the Tayledras are *still* trying to correct the damage. And the damage "echoes back in time", giving rise to the current storyline. I don't blame Urtho for trying to avoid this. I think any "good" person would try to avoid this. Think about the other weapons in Urtho's tower (end of Storm Rising) that weren't used, and the warning Urtho left. A goddess forced her people to guard those weapons. I suspect that, if I were a character in White Gryphon, I would have some sympathy with those who think that Skandranon is not a hero but someone who rashly precipitated a crisis. Frankly, I was a little disappointed that ML didn't follow up that angle more. But I guess that makes Skandranon Rashkae less of a heroic protagonist. That magic box is NOT a weapon that I would like to have charge of . And, frankly, it's a pretty good metaphor for the nuclear weapons that Earth's political powers had/have/are trying to get. I lose sleep sometimes thinking that some world leader will unleash a "magic box" because they #are# willing to win at any cost. Comments, arguments, discussion welcome. Some of what SSI (Where TSR puts out it's software) has written is decent although I wouldn't go and buy it... But if you're looking for a paper-based game I could give you some recommendations... Sci-Fi & Fantasy mix: Shadowrun, it's a game based on some of Nostradamus' (please correct me if I'm wrong I could be thinking about something else) prophcies. It's set about 60 years in the future. Cyberware has become a way of life and magic has returned to Earth. With the magic have come the elves, dwarfs, orks etc. Characters are relatively easy to generate and often rely on heavy role playing, not dice rolling. Fantasy: Earthdawn is a decent game, about on par with TSR's Dungeons and Dragons and a bit simpler in system mechanics. All in all I wouldn't suggest diving into the Dungeons and dragons right away. They've just revamped the rules and need some time to work out new bugs. The new rules are simpler than the old, but there's still too much dice rolling being done. Other Sci-Fi: GURPS - by Steve Jackson Games Albedo - by Steve Gallici (sp?) Albedo is a anthropomorphic roleplaying game. Paranoia - It's a silly game, where you have to hunt down commie mutant traitors with things like papercut chainsaws Cyberpunk UnderGround Battletech Legions of Steel Other Fantasy: GURPS Vampire: the Masquerade Werewolf: the Apocalypse Changeling: the Dreaming Mage: the Ascension Wraith: the Oblivion Warhammer Other: Toon Tales from the Floating Vagabond Project A-Ko (Yes believe it or not they made it into a game.) This is what I can think of off the top of my head. --Gyrfalcon =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. The first is that Heralds serve justice by riding circuit, reading the "criminal's" mind and dispensing justice. First of all, not all Heralds can read the thoughts of others, which makes the need for Vrondi. The second misconception is that Vrondi perform the Truth Spell in return for the energy of the Heartstone. What really happens is that the Truth Spell summons a Vrondi and directs it to do one of several things, depending on which stage you initiate. What the Vrondi do in return for a line of energy from the Heartstone is watch anyone using magic in Valdemar that doesn't have a Companion. It certainly doesn't seem like it sometimes. And not just with Misty, others too. Maybe they just weren't important enough to mention, or something else, I don't know. But he never mastered the level of perfection (or so they like to think) that Urtho got with the Gryphons. That leads me to believe that Urtho must have been the better sorceror-adept. Maybe he's not neccesarily the best at combat magics though. It did say somewhere that he was better suited to making things than to being a warlord. That could be why Ma'ar was defeating them. Also some Heralds created gates (Savil, Elspeth, Van, etc..) and they were just Adepts. (:*BECKY*:) ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 314 *********************************
