The "empire" he does encounter is that of the Black Kings, when the Kaled'a'in travel overland to the east?west? sea and cross it. When enough of them get >there, they hold it just out of reach and say, If you do such-and-such, >you get all this tasty mage-energy. I guess that's what the vrondi feed >on, or something. Speculations? Oathbound and other T & K stories talk about "air elementals" that are attracted by mage power and feed off of that power. In MPrice, Van always has them around. From hints given by Karal in SWarning, the "tell me true" spell has always been possible for mages. Presumably, the mages repay the elementals by sending them power. I think that what Van did was tie the vrondi into the Web, so they would have a consistent feeding source and stick around for wizard-watch (every vrondi "on" Velgarth is probably hanging out in Valdemar). In the description of that spell-casting, Van offers them a stream of power from the node that is powering the Web. In AFlight, Kris (I think) says that the vrondi are attracted to the Companions, so they are always around, and willing to help out when a Herald needs to use the Truth Spell. The Haven Heartstone did not exist until WChange/WFury. When the Heartstone is activated and "magic" is back in Valdemar, the vrondi part of the Web Spell was deactivated to avoid damaging the vrondi. The vrondi will probably stick around Valdemar for a while, but they are no longer "spelled" to do so. It should be interesting to see if ML writes in "consequences" for the Heralds on circuit--does the TruthSpell still work for non-mage-gifted Heralds? Does it only work "through" the Companions? All of this is IIRC, no books in the office, etc. Kathy Covert (kcovert-+AT+-wvnvm.wvnet.edu) Kathy Covert (kcovert-+AT+-wvnvm.wvnet.edu) Chemistry Department West Virginia University (304)293-3435 x4442 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 11:12:31 -0800 (PST) From: "Patrick S. One of the Kal'enedral says to her "Be at peace, student of my student." I take it that this was Tarma since Elspeth was Kero's student, and Kero was Tarma's student. The quote may not be correct, nor the place and time, but I know it was something like this. Declan "I am all that I claim to be. I simply have not claimed all that I am." - Lady Kethryveris ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 1996 11:25:47 -0800 (PST) From: "Patrick S. The book I know of (by this author) is Gossamer Axe. I'm not sure who the author is, but it seems to be a fairly popular book, although I'm not sure why it's not in my public library. It will come up with Online Firebird Music Catalog. From that point I think you can see the rest of the stuff too. Declan "I am all that I claim to be. I usually do about 20 or so replies each day. I have also started two new threads and am about to start another. Am I overdoing it at all? If I am, please tell me. And I don't want to get yelled at Anyways, whoever wants it, please tell me again. And I have a question, I think I missed messages, and some of mine got eaten yeaterday. Does the list try sending the messages again if your server dies temporarily? Sorry if this is a stupid question. One more, what's the adress for the archives? I looked through some of the other stuff, and didn't see the archive adress anywhere. Everyone can't come back. Urtho seems like the kind of person that lived out his life, and was done with it. I don't think he would want to keep coming back and doing battle. He didn't like doing battle. He could just go to the Havens, and be at peace, which he certainly deserves. After all, that's all he wanted out of life, peace.
