There may be a simpler explanation - it's likely that Tarma and Warrl visited the Talesedrin fairly regularly - or at least occasionally (aren't they just returning from such a visit at the start of BTS?). Maybe Warrl visited or mindspoke other members of his clan (or vice versa) on the way there or back; [I don't think we ever get quoted the range for kyree-kyree mindspeech?), which would account for Rris knowing the tales. In _By the Sword_, when the two of them go to rescue Kero, Warrl says something to the effect of, "Maybe your Goddess would take me along with you?" (I can't remember the exact passage.) I hope you mean coach=automobile, because nobody could get horses to run at 55 mph for 8 days. They would drop dead of exhaustion first. The maximum speed a horse could do at a gallop is about 25 mph, and they can't keep that up for very long, especially not if they're pulling something heavy, like a coach. ____________________________________________________________________________ | Anne Cross | "How many witches does it take | | juniper-+AT+-fledge.watson.org | to change a lightbulb?" | | http://www.watson.org/~juniper/ | "What do you want to change it into?" | ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: 19 Jan 96 09:02:46 EST From: Judy_Nations-+AT+-mhsmail.git.gulfaero.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: WHO WOULD YOU CAST? I think this is an example of Misty switching very skillfully between Short and Long Time. It's a writer's technique whereby you indicate in one place that things are taking or have taken a long time, and in another that it's only been two days. The best-known example is in Othello, where Iago manages to convince Othello that Desdemona and Cassio have lain in lusty heat ;) many hundreds of times since Othello was married to her. Problem is that Othello was married to her for less than a day before the whole cast packed up and left for Cyprus -- and Desdemona and Cassio were on different ships. And Iago makes his accusation after about a day and a half there. Yet audiences for four hundred years have bought this in the heat of the moment -- that it would have been *possible* for Desdemona to be unfaithful, although we know she hasn't. I think that the very fact this incident with Talia wasn't brought up earlier (I hadn't even thought about it) reveals that Misty has the same sort of knack. We're reading and our subconsciousnesses accept that that's what happened. We don't even notice the apparent discrepency. I get about 300 new messages over the weekend, and I'm the primary user of space for E-Mail on my server. I usually have approx. 1,000 K of unread mail and 4,000 K of sent mail. It gets a bit much, but I don't save it at the end of the month. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- -Wishing he wasn't so tired of life- Declan patw-+AT+-clark.edu -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jan 1996 09:36:28 -0800 (PST) From: "Patrick S. I've already made a personal apology. I promise that this won't happen again. Has anyone else been annoyed with the fact that on the covers of most of the books (at least, my copies!) , the Companion's eyes are brown, not blue? I'd like to apologize to any and all who I may have offended. I see now what kind of an attitude I was having, and I am sorry. I promise all of you on the list that it will not happen again. Um.. I didn't mean a motor coach. I meant a coach and four, i.e., I specifically meant the sort of public transportation that would have been available in 1776. What sort of coach do you mean? A Bus? I think it was H.L. Mencken who said the US and UK were two countries divided by a common language (or something similar :-) As to Indiana, according to my World Book Encyclopedia it is 177 miles wide and 273 miles long, measuring from eastmost to westmost, northmost to southmost, so mostly it is smaller. 36,185 sq. miles, 93,720 sq. km. Just south of the Great Lakes, well west of the Appalachians. average elevation about 550 ft. Of course, if Valdemar is Indiana, then Ma'ar and his evil empire started out in Canada.... :-) I don't own a horse, and I'm not an expert on how far/fast they can go. I got the 8 day figure from the play "1776". Yoicks! and Away! Cindy ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 330 *********************************
