Maybe there was something like it, that was destroyed, and lost, and no one knew how to make another one. Or maybe Urtho was such a powerful amge that _he_ was the link to the power source. It is possible that he was that powerful. But most mages aren't that poweful, explaining why permamnent gates were lost to the world. Next time I'll wait, go home, and read before I post. One thing I did rediscover was that there were (presumably) no heartstones before the MageWars, the Star Eyed gave the technology to the part of the Sundered Clans that would become Tayledras people. (Of course, some of the Great Mages could have known how to make Heartstones, but the Kaled'a'in mages did not. The rediscovered Clan of K'Leshya did not have Heartstones (Silverfox at the end of Wof Change). I still have a lot of questions about the Heartstones--the difference between the "living " heartstone in Highjorune (MPromise) and the "mad" Heartstone in the Tayledras Vale (W of Change). And how can an "activated" heartstone in Haven absorb the purified Heartstone energy from the Vale? I'm enjoying thinking about magical energy, thermodynamics, and entropy. I have learned that many apparent violations of thermodynamics are explained by looking at a larger system. The "energy is neither created or destroyed" works for closed systems. Earth is not a closed system, it absorbs energy from the sun. Perhaps in order to understand the thermodynamic of magic on Velgarth we need to consider the material plane, other planes (Nether Planes, Ethereal Planes, etc.), as well as the Void (which is described not as empty space but rather chaotic energy.) Hey--perhaps that explains it? Entropy is increasing in the Void? Or perhaps that is the role of Gods and Goddesses---holding back the tides of entropy? Poetry in thermodynamics--now I know it's time for a nap. Michael Praed woudl be perfect.. And as for the series Robin Hood..Didn't Jason Connery also play the part? I'm not from the UK, but one of the PBS stations out ehre plays it occasionally. Ashke, I think that some video stores actually rent them out. :) One in my area does (bounce bounce..it's just brilliant work), and they've got an order in for me so I can buy the whole set.
