They would drop dead of exhaustion first. The maximum speed a horse could do at a gallop is about 25 mph and they can't keep that up for very long, especially not if they're pulling something heavy, like a coach." Does anyone know enough about horses to answer these questions? (Anne, help!) How fast is a walk, (a trot) (a gallop) and how long can a horse be expected to keep it up (with a rider) (carrying a load) (drawing a wagon, cart, stage)? What is a reasonable distance to travel in a day, and what is the sort of distance you can make under stress? Given that, I think we can better calculate what Companions can do. Also, does anyone know what "backing" a horse is? I've always taken it to mean building up the horses back muscles until they are accustomed to carrying weight on the spine. Do you suppose Companions need the same sort of exercise in order to get used to having riders? Korendil said: "Now what, may I ask, are these strange sub-areas of fantasy that Misty has?" Actually, I think they are just labels to indicate which books are tied more closely together. I mean, look at the map. Urthos forces were camped around the his tower, which is in the center of the Dhorisha, and Ma'ars "palace" is at the bottom of Lake Evendim. In The Black Gryphon, they make it sound like this distance is very short, since Ma'ar and Urtho are commanding from their respective bases, and the forces are meeting somewhere in between. That would mean that the forces of each army would be fighting against each other somewhere in northern Rethwellan or Southern Valdemar. To me, that seems like a pretty long way to go just to fight. So, is the continent that Valdemar is on really BIG? That's the impression that I get, especially since the city that Amberdrake stayed in while he was studying the "scientific" methods of medicine was in the area that Lake Evendim is now, and that's a LONG way away from the plains.
