Didn't anyone actually read the original post? Julie wasn't disparaging the gay community. She was disparaging pictures that are aimed _at_ the gay community. She was only saying that the artwork that people try to sell to the gay community is bad, not that the community itself is. Julie has said that she meant nothing homophobic by her statement. I also can't believe that anyone who has been on this list for any length of time could be homophobic. She made a simple statement that some of Larry's artwork reminded her of other, distasteful artwork that she had seen, which was aimed at the gay community. The point was, I think, that in the western version the mage can't be fed from outside. The reason Vanyel could feed his power to Lendel was because they were Lifebonded - Vanyel was not a channel (unlike Karal). There is another bond that makes that kind of power-transfer possible - Mornelithe refers to it in WFate. I think. Does anyone have any theories about those? re: Snowfire and Silence. Silence healed herself and became Snowfire when she traveled with the k'Treva mage (whose name I can't remember - Leafsong???? or something like that) to the new k'Sheyna vale. That would be a lovely story, I think. I don't think they got lifebonded or anything, but it seems like an interesting journey... -Seanna ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 13:24:02 EET From: "Sanna Koulu" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Adepts & nodes - Spoilers for BG Message-ID: <13BD2FC7095-+AT+-otdk.helsinki.fi> Kerry wrote: (snipped some) > Y'know.. despite what we've been saying, I wonder if it's possible that it's > only heartstone energy that bleaches (rather than node energy).. every > situation where someone's gotten bleached has been one where that person > has been using (or been exposed to a heartstone in the past sometime). Seems a bit unlikely. I mean, there's no qualitative difference between node power and heartstone power; it's just a question of the _amount_ of energy. Btw, didn't Kethry get bleached? Or was it just age? And, did she ever use nodes? But since most of the ones who get bleached (and who use nodes) are Tayledras-trained, it might be hard to find evidence one way or another... I haven't read TWG yet, so I wouldn't know. I'm basing this on the prologue to AotQ (I think; one of the early books anyhow) where they first told us of how the Mage-Wars warped the land. I think Misty said that magic had been warped for centuries afterwards, but had then calmed. Thus there might be a lot of chaos and variation in the warped centuries, but the level of disruption itself would level off. > Otherwise you're still left with the questions of why using node-energy > burnt mages of Vanyel's time so much (and I don't believe it's just that > Van was more sensitive) and why the use of mage-focii helped.. Very true. Now theories: the Mage-focii would still help, I think. The knowledge of them has just been forgotten. After all, Tayledras don't need individual focii, since they have their heartstones. It would be harder to explain the node-energy, but... Only Adepts (or Tayledras) can use nodes well. Lesser mages (also in Vanyel's times) _would_ get burned, the same as Ancar did. Also, it's possible that Adepts in Talia's times too would get burned _if_ they didn't spare the extra power and attention to channel the node-power properly. After all, at the end of MPawn, Vanyel got fried because he was too _exhausted_ to channel... Just theorizing...:) (snip) > > > I think the Herald-Mages in general were just not that into spells, rather > > > more into combat magics (which seem to be primarily throwing energy around). > > > > Agreed. Adepts (T was definitely Adept) have more power to > pour into spells - they're going to work better.. I think we're talking of different things here.. I think that there's some reason for Adepts being better at spells, but it's _not_ connected (at least directly) to the amount of power they've got to burn. I reason that spells are kind of "shortcuts" to the desired result... That they require less power than the long way, but more knowledge. Thus, a simple shield could be created with a sheer burst of power, or by layering it on with just trickles of energy, using skill. (snip) > > I'd say the power requirements shouldn't faze Masters from Gating. > > Nowhere has it been said that Adepts automatically have larger power > > reservoirs, and Ancar had just gorged himself on blood energy. > > Whoa.. I don't agree at all with the Adepts bit above.. Adept-potential > means the potential to handle and store Adept-level amounts of energy, > getting the requisite control means gaining Adept status. I think the main difference between Masters and Adepts is that Adepts can handle node-power. However, I don't think this means they can _store_ such huge amounts of energy any better than Masters. I think a mage's capacity is individual, and that a Master might well have a larger reservoir than an Adept (though on the whole Adepts probably have more capacity). Savil also stated that the energy needed for a Gate _could_ be planned for and stored. I think a Master would need a longer time to prepare than an Adept, but he could accumulate enough power. Still, Adepts would probably be better at making a Gate quickly. > > While > > it possibly requires less energy to Gate something from the Void, I'd > > say the difference between that and making a Gate 20 meters away > > isn't that telling. > > I'd still think that there's a big difference between Gating > into the void to get something from inside it and Gating into AND out of > the Void to some 20 meters away in the original plane. To me, the energy > expenditure arises from four things - reaching between the 'real' world > and the Void, finding the appropriate place in the Void to leave, reaching > back from the Void to the 'real' world and making a stable link between > Real->Void->World. I'd even say that the big energy expenditure is > reaching between the worlds (after all, you said above, most of the energy > cost comes from the seeking, not the maintaining part of the gate. Seems quite logical. However, one might consider the following: 1) Gating a long way (in the physical world) requires more energy than Gating a short way. This seems to indicate that the energy expenditure is not so much in the transition (World/Void/World) but in the distance traveled in the Void. Thus, if Mornelithe was far inside the Void, the distance to him might be a lot more than that between two points in the Void equivalent to the real-world locations that are close together. I'd say the transitions require minimal amounts of energy. 2) Stabilizing the Gate requires a burst of energy - maybe one third of the total?? Both Savil and Ancar describe this. (It's accompanied by the flash of soundless light) So the only thing Ancar did differently was that he didn't reach out from the Void into the real world again - but, I think that that wouldn't have needed much more power at all. But I'm willing to be over-ruled, as Moondance said. A few related comments: Vikteren was of Journeyman status but had at least Master-potential. This was seen as the reason that he could hold open the Gate in BG. But note that _potential_ is not enough to qualify for Adept-spells. Kethry was an Adept-potential mage, but she couldn't cast Adept- spells before reaching the rank! We haven't seen any bleached Gryphons, except Skandranon. So Gryphons might have resistance to bleaching... The relevant question is, if even an unbleachable (by normal means) Gryphon got white by spending time between the Gates, how did Mornelithe (who was a real human to begin with) stay golden-haired? After all, he was much longer in the void. Also, how did Mornelithe/An'desha normally stay that color? Did they constantly use power to preserve the gold? Seems out of character for An'desha, at least. -Seanna ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 1996 07:45:44 -0500 (EST) From: Catherine Osborne To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: RE: Geography of Valdemar Message-ID: Re: Declan says that Urtho's and Ma'ar's armies needed to go a long way to fight each other. So, this is sort of it: a bus is something with pre-set stops/timetable/fares, that you get to work or the shops or ... well just out; a coach is something you tour on, it's less utilitarian, you don't tend to pay when you get on, it's associated (for me anyway) with holidays/special trips - a band might tour in a coach, but not a bus, a stagecoach is something with horses and cracking whips. He would have been able to magically dye himself if it was just the transition from Between to "here" through the gate that shocked him, but he wouldn't have if it was the spending time Between; he'd have been to out of it to raise a mage-light, much less dye himself. I think. Does anyone have any > theories about those? IMO I believe that what Mornelithe mentioned the bond between someone who abuses them. Isn't that what he did to Nyara? Through tortering her he developed a bond which enabled him to use her ability. I could be wrong, it's been a while since I read WFate. Message-ID: Re:mule and dyheli. Whiteraven asked the list what they thought the offspring would be like. Didn't we already get into this? On a sadder note, this is good-bye. I can't read all of my mail at all, and, of all the blasphemus things to say, I am killing this one. I hate to have to say that, to have to get that out, but this is starting to feel like my "second time around". I have already discussed a great majority of the stuff, and I thought I was still relatively new. I hate to leave, but Jaguar will help you out, and I'm really just collecting dust here....lurking once more.....afraid to answer mail for fear I'll sound bitter.....anywho. Anyone who wants to write me, or talk, or ask, or whatever is welcome, and I know I'll answer any questions you have. It's time to let you go, your big kids now, and it's time for me to accept that you have to leave home. Funny, it seems it's the other way around. Well, sorry to go, but I couldn't leave without saying good-bye to all of my friends here. I'll be back in the summer, I hope, and I look forward to then. I remember being most disappointed when good friends simply vanished. Ah well, yet another one riding into the sunset. Seems out of > character for An'desha, at least. Well, from my distant reading of the Gryphon books and also the Winds trio, it seemed to me that Mornelithe, (by the time he had become falconsbane, and almost forgotten what/who Ma'ar was) was invading the bodies of potential mages who had some of his blood. It seems to me, that to do this, he would have to leave behind any body he'd been inhabiting... i'd always assumed that it had been the actual magic of the blast and the passage through a closing Gate that bleached Skan. Also, he kept the golden hair by shapeshifting originally, but also because he didn't use a heartstone; he was a blood mage primarily. And a deeply felt apology to Whiteraven! Sorry! I misread your comment! I tend to scan the longer posts, and sometimes i miss things. Sorry!!! And I can't remember if i posted this before, so bear with me.... LOVEBONDS VS. LIFEBONDS.... Case study: Erin and Terry meet, and gradually fall in love. They are together for some number of years, and remain deeply in love, but are only lovebonded. Enter Pat. Pat and Terry meet and instantly become lifebonded. My question is, what happens next? Could this happen? And a general poll: WHICH WOULD RATHER HAVE, A LIFEBOND, OR A LOVEBOND???? ****************Herald Chonni Brightwolf************************************** Just because some of us can read and write and do a little math does not mean we should conquer the universe. ------------------------------ Date: 23 Jan 96 23:42:53 EST From: "David J. There are plenty of pictures of bondbirds, gryphons, and Companions. However, we see hertasi, kyree, and makaar only once or twice. Tevardi are right out, same for dyheli. Will we get pictures of these later on, or be left with only our imaginations(not entirely a bad thing.)? While I'm at it, why not some stories about them in particular? Except for Warrl, the Companions and the gryphons, humans have had all the lead roles. It might be interesting to have a story that is only about kyree, or dyheli, or hertasi, etc As for casting characters, the only celebrity I really have used is the guy who played Khan in the first Star Trek movie. I think he makes a good Lord Orthallen.
