Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword is a lovely book, as it the prequel The Hero and The Crown, and her latest Deerskin (I think that's what it's called) has a strange compulsion about it - I went back to page 1 as soon as I'd finished it and started again! Patricia McKillip's Prince of Hed trilogy is also excellent - but the heroine is secondary to the hero. Do you suppose Companions need the >same sort of exercise in order to get used to having riders? Ok, I can answer these (and would various and sundry fantasy writers check them out, because I am tired of those beasts of burden that often seem capable of extraordinary feats...:) ) Walk: On level ground should cover about 4 -5 miles per hour Trot: Covers 7-10 miles per hour Canter: 8-12 miles per hour Flat out gallop: racehorses can make close to 40 miles an hour - for a mile. Realistically we are talking about a 15-20 mph pace, which is gnerally not sustainable for more than about 30 minutes at a time. Endurance horses complete 100 mile rides over all types of terrain in less than 24 hours, to give an example of the ability of the top echelon . I am guessing that the traditional coach and four could make about 15 mph on good roads that were reasonably flat, and horses that were changed every few hours. "Backing" a horse is the process of training a horse to be ridden, as opposed to training a horse to "drive" or pull a carriage. While it is necessary to stregthen a horse's back muscles to carry a rider for long periods of time (and is part of the training process) a ten year old companion in good shape should be quite capable of carrying a rider through the battle and beyond - although he might have a few sore muscles to show for it the next day. Hope this helps - and that ten other people haven't posted the same answer - as I am reduced to reading the digests every three days and then responding. Pat and Terry meet and instantly become >lifebonded. How can you be sure it wasn't a case of instant lust? It can mimic the early signs of lifebonding fairly well - a searing need to be with that person, an inability to contemplate life without them, the total faith that this is IT .. only problem is that lust burns out, then where's your life - lovebonded gone or suffering from a severe case of the sulks, love-of-your-life a rat, bastard, louse, son-of-a-pig etc etc etc. Do I sound jaded and cybical? I'm not, really! I would say be veerryy wary of diagnosing lifebonds - maybe in Velgarth (is it Velgarth or is that another book - I've been reading "other people's books" just lately I'm afraid) the heralds/mind mages have ways of diagnosing these things more certainly. Look at the divorce rates in Europe/USA - I bet most of those people seriously thought it was for keeps when they started. Maybe lifebonds need more work than lovebonds? I have another thought as well - can lifebonds be one-sided? Love bonds certainly can I would think - but could you get one person deeply needing to be with someone who doesn't really return the great need? Now, (be patient, I have to drag some names out from deep down now) Ylsa and Keren (??) were lifebonded in AoQ (I think) then Ylsa gets killed and Talia hauls Sheryl along to join in and hey presto, Keren and Sheryl lifebond, ( I might have Keren and Sheryl mixed up here). So,...... was Sheryl suffering from a one-sided lifebond? Or was it a 3-way lifebond that hadn't developed yet? Whaddya reckon? I know, I know, they're all fairly daft, but this was so implausible I was cross with myself for wasting my time, cross with the author for wasting what had been a good book in the first half, and I'm still grumbling to myself about it today! How could I have forgotten Robin McKinley???!!!??? I feel lost in the maze of my mind, which has fled inward at this great evil that I have incurred upon myself and the world. But now I have been reminded, so everything is OK. And Mary Herbert's stuff is good too- I'll second whoever's email brought that up. sharleen * Imagination is our only weapon in the war against reality * http://www.duke.edu/~spj1/ email: spj1-+AT+-acpub.duke.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jan 1996 11:36:59 EST From: Stormcloud To: Subject: lifebond vs. lovebond Message-ID: <25JAN96.12546222.0059.MUSIC-+AT+-SJUMUSIC> Van and Stef were trying to make this point in WOFury-- a lifebond leaves you no choice. You MUST make your lifemate happy, or else you will be miserable, because you share emotions, life, essentially you share a soul. It is something like the bond a Herald has with his/her Companion-- inseperable except by death. In a lovebond, there is more effort to make it work. Essentially, the point is this: you can have a lifebond without a great love for the other person. Respect, you must have. Some kind of affection, you must have. But not necessarily LOVE (although admittedly, it helps and makes things a hell of a lot easier.) A lifebond is made out of need. A lovebond is made out of love. When it comes down to it, I think I would rather have a beloved than a forced lifemate. Or else, I would rather have the love first, and then realize the lifebond. Because with love, what you put into it is what you get out of it. That's just my humble opinion, as the player of 3 lifebonded personas, and 3 "lovebonded" personas-- as someone who has had to play both sides of this. Oh, and that scenario that was mentioned, about the couple in love that is disrupted by the coming of the fated lifemate of one of them. (Sorry I can't remember the names that were used) That is a very interesting thought. But I think the choice is clear, because as long as two people are lifebonded, they cannot choose to do anything that will make their disrupt their lifebond. They would have to leave their lover and go with their lifebond. Another thing that brushes this topic: Sherril, Keren, and Ylsa. (I hope I got all the names right.) Keren says to Sherril that she and Ylsa would have welcomed her into their relationship. I always though that Keren and Ylsa were lifebonded. . . (I could be wrong, and some- one please tell me if I am) but does that mean S, K, and Y were a 3-way lifebond? Could such a thing be possible? In Valdemar, the truth spell was discovered by a contemporary of Vanyel, right before the Dark Servants came marching over the mountains. So, I guess the heartstone was set up at this time, and the vrondi got energy from that in return for performing the truth spell. Magic can be used to cast an illusio around the companion of a different colour. Since this isnt real it cant be bleached. I supposed if you used magic to physically dye a companion this wont last long too. I supose falconbanes gold hair lasted longer because he didn't use nodes as much as the hawkbrothers. Subject: Good Read w/heroines Message-ID: If you want a good read with heroines (and plenty of 'em) try Midori Snyder's 'Queen's Quarter' trilogy (New Moon, Sadar's Keep, Beldan's Fire). Like Lackey they feature gifts, magical creatures and street-urchin types but they've got a lot more grit -- people die and stay dead. They're also extremely well written; edge of your seat stuff all the way through. If you've got anarchistic tendencies try Spedding's 'The Road and the Hills'-- long but worth it. Wait, yes it does! I will conquer the universe!! Oh...wait... maybe I won't.....Can't figure out how to get to the universe...darn... Anyways I think I would rather have a good, solid lovebond than a lifebond. It could be extremely unpleasant at times from the way it's been explained. I remember Stefan talking about it and saying that if one person is unhappy, the other is also unhappy as well. I understand that with a lovebond that could happen to, but not to the same extent. Anyways, I'm not sure what the actors name was, but the character was Vincent. And Catherine was somebody off of Days of our Lives. She played.....umm....Kayla, yeah that's it. I agree, he would make a good Mornelithe. I have the sheet music for the theme song right in front of me, and it has a wonderful picture on the front of it. He looks really Mornelitheish (new word!).
