To be a consort (a co-ruler) you must meet two conditions: you >must be married to the person who is already reigning, and you must be a >full Herald. Yes, but in order for Selenay's father to be *legitimate*, and able to inherit the crown. I call as example Jisa's situation; that's part of the reason Jisa's mother [her name just fled my mind screaming] resisted marrying Randale: she didn't want to rule when Randi died, and she didn't want to put Jisa in line for the throne. Also, if I remember my Arrows books correctly, "consort" is the title non-Herald royal spouses have, as in Selenay's first husband. (I seem to remember a reference to "He wasn't happy with just consort status," or something like that.) If they both were heralds, which, according to the timeline, has only happened once before (Arden and Leesa, Roald's parents), they are co-consorts and both have full powers of ruling. My only question is why does Daren not seem to have these powers? He's of not just noble, but royal blood, he's married to Selenay, and he's been Chosen. The same as either Arden or Leesa (whoever of that pair "married into" the ruling family), except I got the feeling that the non-royal spouse was Valdemaran, and thus "merely" noble, not royal. So how come Daren seems to be a second in command to Selenay instead of a co-ruler? Oh, and in response to someone, Mertis was the wife of the Rethwellan king in exile. (He was...oh, I guess you could say, the anti- Char...damn, I'm not doing well with names this morning.) She was not Roald's lover. Welp, I guess that's all for now. You have your literary/media filk, about things like Star Trek or Mercedes Lackey. You have pure comedic filk, often put to an already-existing tune. And there's music that really is like modern folk music: an example would be some of Michael Longcor's stuff. Common themes are historical events, and sci-fi and fantasy characters we all know and love. I suppose it IS horrid if you hate it, but then, what isn't? Frankly, I think a voice like Heather Alexander's or Julia Ecklar's would sound good reading the proverbial phone book -- or this rather dry and tedious post. To my mind, it was the Star-Eyed's way of reminding Tarma, who is, recall, her chosen warrior, that no matter how well she got along with the Heralds and how common their interests were, Tarma, as Kal'enedral, belonged first and foremost to the service of the goddess in her Shin'a'in aspect. True, it may be stretching a point to extend this to your run-of-the-mill Shin'a'in types, let alone to the Tayledras and the nonhumans, but I think it's doable. The goddess may be one goddess everywhere and all that, but she has different interests that aren't all mix-and-match. Just because everyone in Misty's world serves the same Higher Power does not, under this interpretation, mean they can all be in the same club. Tarma is, in her way, very like a Herald. But she ain't no Herald; hence the significance of the Star-Eyed insisting she wears the black of a Kal'enedral blood feud, not Herald whites. Of course, this argument only stands up until Misty writes a book about a k'Valdemar Tayledras who gets Chosen. Then I'll be wrong. Ah, well, after 20 years I'm used to that. My impression is that this is "out of time/space/etc.". We saw it before (only once I think) in the LHM books. Right after Van and Stef get together Van meets 'Lendel in Dreamtime after Yfandes leads him there. Now, if this were real time/space/etc. this would be impossible -- Yfandes is asleep (established later) and 'Lendel is Stef (also asleep - right there). So if Dreamtime is outside of everything else like that, distance wouldn't matter for Kero and Eldan. Does this make sense? (Of course I can't start to explain why Kero and Eldan get to use Dreamtime this way and noone else does -- maybe the Gods (you can always blame things you don't understand on Gods 8-)).) Many of my closest friends seem to have reading habits similar to my own. Perhaps an accurate evaluation of someone's personality type could be done through an examination of the books we enjoy/identify with most easily. If looked at in this way, Misty's books would appeal to a person perhaps a bit frustrated with the current world order (politics, governmental disarray), lack of morals in society, lack of recognization for those (such as themselves ;) who have special talents that they would like to share, and, as in this thread topic- who feel a need for a true soul mate to love and share everything with. This type of bonding can be found in two forms in the Valdemar books: Companion bond, and life bond. Both are absolute, permanent, will remain through all trials, and involve a sharing beyond the level often found in relationships today. Both of those possibilities call to me with incredible power. Unfortunately, they are contained within the covers of books, and although I long to hope that a personal relationship could equal that of the lifebond, I am also something of a cynic. Do people and circumstances in today's earthly world have the potential to create and support such a bond? We seem to have become so transient, materialistic... employment is a challenge to find, and people do not necessarily live in one place for any decent length of time. This fragments friendships/families, is perhaps the source of many of our problems. There is no real sense of community- no central location at which to assemble and meet old friends. (ex = Haven) Ooops- a little off topic, but not much. I am just extremely attracted to the idea of a place/time like Valdemar, and I wonder if it is an integral part of my and others' personalities that we are. sharleen * Imagination is our only weapon in the war against reality * http://www.duke.edu/~spj1/ email: spj1-+AT+-acpub.duke.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 13:25:57 -0500 (EST) From: EGLESTON-+AT+-bpl.org To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Yfandes' kids Message-ID: <960201132557.747-+AT+-bpl.org> I can't find the original message (the computer here at work has been bollixed for the past couple of days) but Yfandes' foals were a colt and a filly named Dancer and Megwyn. Not a flame or complalint, just a tired whine from a tired long-termer." If you think this is bad, consider the Sherlockians -- they haven't had any new material for _decades_ and yet the debates go on! Whee! :-> Seriously tho, part of the reason for the rehashes is waiting for more "meat-and-potatoes" from Misty, and part of it is that half the fun lies in trying to figure out what the rules of a fictional world are. Especially when it is a world as _consistent_ as Misty's Velgarth. There are side mentions in series that are divided by years in publishing dates. For example, look at the scene where Savil meets with Starwind after Gating herself up to the cave near k'Treva with Vanyel. When she asks about Moondance he answers her in Thoughtspeech that he is "telling the stranger -lasha'Kaladra not to eat me." (MPawn ch. 11, p. 266) "lasha'Kaladra" is awful close to the Shin'a'in words for ghost swordsworn, isn't it? And that's what makes it fun to keep looking for the clues -- because they are all over the map! If the Velgarth books didn't have themes which resonated across the fictional world, we probably wouldn't be here, talking about them across several continents. Yoicks! and Away! Go blame > him. :) What it is/was is this. The Men in White(tm) were a tangent invented when the list went essentially dead for several days over the summer. IIRC several list members all took vacations during that week. How it started: Somebody (Ian I believe.) posed the inevitable question: "Where'd everybody go?" To which we started a thread about having people being abducted by the ever generic "Men in White" (Go with the nice doctor, he'll put you in a nice padded room all to yourself). It was later theorized that they wern't reall persons of the medical profession but David Eddings fans who were harrassing the list members. After much banter, yelling, and a little bit of scuffuling (the result of which was me being brained by somebody's copy of Belgarth the Sorceror). It was later suggested that they were really Piers Anthony's fans and needing support for their "favorite author" they began to kidnap list members and brainwash them. Shortly after the first of the "Men in White" posts appeared. Later posts have been put up as I thought about it, usually after one of the newbies has either asked about them or somehow the threads turn to a Piers Anthony topic. As for the other groups they have appeared recently, apparently in response to the threat of the Men in White. They of course take on new members, as the TMIW do not. Fair winds and skies, --Gyrfalcon BWTMIW! =======================msowers-+AT+-menger.eecs.stevens-tech.edu=================== Magic still exists. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Let it roam free or it will die. ============================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Feb 1996 14:23:34 -0500 (EST) From: EGLESTON-+AT+-bpl.org To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Firecats Message-ID: <960201142334.747-+AT+-bpl.org> Just occurred to me -- the reason why the Firecats are all "groveborn", i.e., just appear rather than being born, is that, until recently, all of the Sons of the Sun have been male. And we don't seem to have any cross-sexed Companions. Maybe Vkandis could manage to come up with avatars, but couldn't make them able to breed because he was a he and not a she.... ObMisty: This ties into newsgroups, specifically rec.humor. People started responding to jokes, comments, etc. on the group for the jokes (rec.humor) rather than the one for discussion of rec.humor (rec.humor.d). As this was straying from the point of the group, it became common practice to look upon those who posted without any humorous content with disdain. This, of course, spread and moderators just stopped allowing the inappropriate posts through. Thus, the Obligatoy Joke (or ObJoke) was born. Essentially, an objoke is a joke which is attached to the end of an otherwise questionable posting. 'Ob' has since become a more general term on the net. Thus, ObMisty refers to Misty-related content attached to an otherwise way off-topic post. MUD stands for Multi User Dungeon (or Dimention, it's been debated). Basicly, a MUD is a program running on some server which allows people to connect, create characters, and interact with other characters and the virtual world they inhabbit. Also, depending on the specific MUD and the user's level of access, users can sometimes also create objects, places, verbs, and/or features to expand this world. Characters can use certain verbs to do things as simple as printing a pre-determined statement, or more complex like altering the properties of an object or the character. MUSH, MUCK, and many other things with a capital 'MU' are essentially the same thing with only some differences in design. MOO, another acronym you might see, may just refer to cows, but it also stands for MUD Object Oriented. MOO is an 'object oriented' programming language of the MUD genre. Basicly, everything is treated as an object with certain properties. For example: a character, a room, and a necklece are all objects. However, the properties of a character (usually) won't allow you to pick it up, the properties of the necklace and character won't allow another character to 'walk into' them, and the properties of the room won't allow you to wear it. Actually, it might be more appropriate to say that they lack the properties which would allow this, with the exception of the character, which is a matter of ownership and permission. As for filk, I don't know exactly what it means, but I believe it is something akin to garbage. ___________________ -==UDIC==- ________________ |\__________________\ McCaffrey's White Dragon |\________________\ ||Why is he talking | || | || to that | a.k.a. || Don't ask. | || White Coconut? | Jake Gipple \|________________| \|__________________| (360)-887-4779 LEMUR! ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 347 *********************************
