I think somewhere in Arrows of the Queen when Talia is threatened with being packed off to a nunnery there is mention of the Holderkin god having a submissive female consort. Since the Holderkin were originally refugees from Karse could this be Vkandis' female equivalent? Not sure about this though, could all be a figment of my imagination. Kestral's uncle, the "good" unsurper king --> Rolend (Rolan?) the Gypsy Free Bard usually called Robin --> Gwyna (Gwyna?) Notice anything? For the latter two, what if grove-born Companions are *not* re-born Heralds, but re-born from *somewhere* else? As for the former .... hey, I don't know. Where did it say the founders of the empire came from? ((sigh))... this probably makes little sense, but I was wondering. Winterwind I was always wondering the same thing about the names. My one theory was that Misty was too overworked to think of new names, but she has written more Velgarth books and they had new names. I was also afraid that she wanted to do a One Universe thing. She has basically tied together the Serrated Edge, Diana Tregarde, and those "other" elves books. (I'm at school, my books are at home.) What if she connected Velgarth and the Free Bards. They could almost be on the same planet, just different continents. They could also be different time periods (ten thousand years after a nuclear war?). I am not advocating this. But the names are similar. On souls being reused, I read an interesting description, by some author. (Name escapes me, the book was not that good.) It set it up so that a specific soul, that could be reincarnated was a single source of light. Each reincarnation was a shadow that it cast, so that they were the same, but still had different characteristics. I think it made the comparison to a lantern, and by turning the front of it, different "patterns" could be formed, but the source of the light was the same. I am not entirely sure if this could work. Are the souls of the heralds necessarily always new? They could have been nice potato farmers in their previous life. They would not have the memories, but if Heralds can be reincarnated as Companions, maybe before they were heralds, they were something else. I could not imagine someone being a herald for more than one lifetime, however. Now, I haven't heard the song, but from various comments I take it that it is supposedly about early Heralds. One of Yfandes' foals was named "Dancer" -- could have been Shadowdancer?...mmmm... re: the very long aids post. It makes a nice point, but I am in the habit of printing out my digests before I leave for work, so that I can read them and comment at lunchtime. Not as much fun when printed, *sigh.* re: Rolan's conversational habits. I'd expect that Mindspeech _is_ an effort for some of the Companions. And in Talia's case, I think she very much needed to be left to learn on her own. After all, she's the Monarch's Own. If Rolan gets killed, a new Companion will be Grove born and come to Chose her. If she's been having conversations with him all along, the transition is going to be worse. (And if it _is_ the same personality each time, she's going to find out.) re: Fat heralds. I think there are two factors. The first is minor. They're in the middle of a war situation, and a double-headed chain of command is not a good thing. The second reason is that he came to her after she has been Queen for a long time. I suspect that Roald's parents (the co-consorts) ascended the throne at the same time, and neither was the direct descendendt of the previous ruler. The Star Eyed could have turned the clothes white after all. And, please note, Idra was _not_ Shin'a'in. She was an outlander Tarma owed some loyalty to, but she wasn't of the clans. I can't >remember her name though. I think it started with an M. I know that lots of people have already metioned that Mertis is married to Stefansen, Idra's brother, not Roald. But, this made me remember something else. In BTS, Kero keeps using the relationship between Idra and Daren wrong. At one point, she mentions, "your Aunt Idra," while she's his great-Aunt. I could live with this, but Kero also says something about, "your father's sister," also meaning Idra. But Daren's dad is Megrarthon Jadrevalyn, the baby from Oathbreakers. Idra was his Aunt, not his sister. It seems that Misty accidentaly confused Stefansen and Megrathron. Did anyone else notice this? That tells me that that formidable lady (Sayvil) has shot her mouth off, so far, only to people *with* the Mindspeaking gift. And The MO companion isn't the *same* companion everytime, he's just born in the same way and has the same characteristics. >hoss, never did have. Tantris is exactly what I had in mind when I was using the word "helpmate." He's the perfect partner. But, he doesn't lead Kris around by the nose or go augmenting his Gifts. That was my point. >for not listening to Gwenna when Orthallen's stooge was trying to bed her - Actually, Gwena never actually *said* anything, she just refused to go anywhere near the little slimeball. >in other words, sometimes the companions are useful (doesn't Alberich's Never said they weren't. :) >I would have thought that the MO would have benefitted somewhat from >being able to discuss things with their companion, See, most MOs in the past have. Well, if we extend the theory that the goddess of Valdemar is the same as the Star-Eyed, it kind of follows. She'd give her people something to help them out when they got into real trouble, but for the rest of the time they have to rely primarily on themselves, their talents/Gifts, and their utilization of her gift, the Companions. >So, come and get me, I'm aspestos clad (if the flames don't kill me the >lung disease will) Nah. I figure there's enough combustibility going around, what with Jaguar and Shadow-Lover. :) Zhai'helleva! Lyn Lyn Belzer * P.O.
