I would suspect he would not have many strong opinions on many things. He was probably not rebellious, but his parents were probably concerned about him. I could imagine that his parents would be willing to put up with a few things Or his parents could have completely neglected him, if anything calling him, "hey you." People in our world are accused of not being like a woman or like a man, even when they plainly are women or men, because they do not resemble what someone was told women are like or men are like. Regarding Companions and gender, I don't see why they couldn't change gender, except that we've not yet heard of any who did. We do know that they experience the full range of intimate affections and carnal pleasures available to their Herald counterparts. Just ask Talia, who knows more than she probably wanted to about Rolan's sex life, or Vanyel, who was always hearing about Yfandes' stallion yearnings. What this all means I do not yet know. Stefan certainly did say that lovebonds had advantages over lifebonds, although I don't think he explicitly said that they were *better* (which I would have found mildly insulting, had I been Van). Lovebonds, however, are much more common than lifebonds. Many, many people fall in love and remain so, in our world and in Misty's. The books mention many times that lifebonds are rare among Heralds, rarer still among the general populace. I must have 300 messages to catch up with.) It seems to me that those two worlds are related (I apologize if this has been said before). The magic systems in the Tregarde/Talldeer/Serra/Bards books seem very very similar to the Velgarath one. Tregarde books are the most blatant mirrors, with all that talk about shields, etc. (This is from the top of my head, I have no books so please be merciful). Can it be? His parents seem pretty nice in Chrome Circle, so I guess he had a reasonably good upbringing. I didn't see anything wrong with him having a nickname that everyone uses - my family does it all the time - I answer to "KJ" more quickly than "Kerry", my sister answers to "Slush" more quickly than "Sasha" (all right, I admit it, I was the one who originated the Slush nickname but it's much more innocent than it sounds considering that she's now 9). Actually, I'm not necessarily a good example because after a heavy roleplaying session, (why does everything I write today sound like a single entendre?) I answer more easily to my character's name than mine. Anyway, dragging myself back to the point, people in my experience like making up names, or having special names for the people they care about; and less close people do it because it's kinda 'cool' to have a nickname for someone. I know this one! The Bardic Gift is the ability to make people on some level participate in your performance; it's a bit like empathy in that respect. It's what Stefan used to sway people's feelings and moods. It has nothing to do with your ability to play/sing/perform. That's the Gift of Musicianship. So, for example, my QO persona has the Bardic Gift, but not the Gift of Musicianship. She breaks no glassware with a lute, but she's not that good. Funny thing is, people never seem to notice. They just enjoy the experience so totally when she performs that they hardly hear her at all. And while, hey, Heather Alexander can read my textbooks anytime, Leslie Fish will always be Tarma to me. Even if she does scare me at conventions. Leslie Fish just scares me. But I wouldn't voluntarily miss a performance of hers; if we realworld types can have the Bardic Gift, I think she's got it. It might have been a nickname that really seemed to _fit_, somehow. I have a couple of friends with nicknames like that, which are used by their parents as well; on the other hand, no nickname has ever really 'taken' on me. Guess I'm just doomed to be plain ol' Mel. :) Do we actually ever see mention of Tannim's real name? If his real name was "something like" Tannim (no, I can't think what that could possibly be, either. Martin is about as close as I can get), then we might have been more prepared to believe that everyone would have called him that.
