First, the pentagram issue: the way I always heard it (and interpretations are obviously different), the five points of a pentegram represented the four elements and Spirit, the "top" point being Spirit. So a pentegram with that top point up represents the elevation of the spiritual over the material world, and upside down is vice versa. Naturally, then, people who use a pentegram as a religious symbol prefer to use it one-point-up because of its spiritual connotations. Dunno if that's any "more true" than any other explanation. Please, please, please. Wicca is not a general, interchangeable term for all pagan and neo-pagan religions. Wicca is Wicca, and yes, it has only existed for about fifty years. It is certainly based in many older pre-Christian traditions, but we know far too little about those religions for anyone to re-create them accurately. Wicca salvaged what it could from the past and meshed those traditions with elements of its own. Which is perfectly fine; there's nothing to say that the old ways are more "legitimate" than the new. But other pagan/"witchy" religions are not necessarily Wiccan. And sin is NOT a Christian concept. The word "sin" derives from a word in --erk, Greek, I think-- which means "to miss the mark." The same word was used in the context of archery. In a society that has ethics and morals -- and that is EVERY society, EVERYWHERE -- there is the recognition that people will sometimes "miss the mark" and fall short of perfectly ethical behavior. In other words, there is the concept of sin. As far as I know, however, those Christian traditions that believe in "original sin," or being sinful before you've had a chance to mess anything up yet, are unique in their understanding of sin. But even Wiccans believe in sin, though they don't call it that. They believe that if you do not live up to the Rede, you have "missed the mark" and behaved wrongly. The major difference is (not always, but by and large) that Christians emphasize being forgiven for their sins, while Wiccans emphasize taking responsibility for the consequences of theirs. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Feb 1996 10:41:43 CDT From: NAME 'Stella' To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: RE: Misty's filk? Here's the quote: (deleted) > >The Roman Catholic Church associated the Horned God (and his upside-down [USD - >I am not writing this over and over] pentagram) with the Devil, in order to >eradicate the worship of this god of fertility and hunting. actually, for a long time, the pentacle was also used as a christian symbol of christ in the early middle ages, which is one of the reasons it is found in celtic christian manuscripts. some where i have a quote by a dark ages bishop saying so...and why it is a holy symbol. this is the point up position. how it originally got a bad reputation is that they decided that if one point up was good, the opposite must be therefore evil....and it became used much as the familiar reversed cross. however, it is used in both ways by the pagan and occult comuntity, for widely diffrent reasons. technicly though, it is generally agreed that a pentacle is any 5 pointed star, usually in a circle. for clarity, most people i know reserve the name pentagram for the reversed kind. but we are just a few,and there is no one true way. however, to be absolutely honest, a 6 pointed star is called a hexagram, so make of it what you will. (smile) also, to the one who wrote of pagans not being as without sin as some christians.....i know what you mean and it is not entirely incorrect... however it was a rather eronious statement as most pagans no more believe in sin than in satan...so it is impossible for them to be "sinful". my morals do not corispond with the ten comandments, so by christian standards, i am immoral. but i am much truer to my morals than most christians are to theirs. i am a happy person who tries my very best not to cause harm. what more can i ask?! So I'm just starting over. My apologies if the original does surface, since you all will have two painfully similar messages. To begin, I think it's a better idea to buy the stuff with multiple artists, just so you get a chance to hear a couple of the better-known voices. With that in mind, I pick Oathbound. It has both Heather Alexander and Leslie Fish, who are very different, but both very good, and it also has a lot of stuff by Larry Warner, another voice I really like. The other strong collection, in some ways, is Heralds, Harpers, and Havoc. The songs are some of my favorites, but the sound is less polished and professional than some of the later recordings. Still, Larry Warner's "Herald's Lament" (sung by Dirk after Kris' death) is one of my favorite songs, and HH&H also has "Threes," which is one of the most popular Misty filk songs. But there is a lot to be said for the single-artist collections, too. By the Sword is written and performed by Meg Davis, and I like just about all the songs on the CD. I like "Warrior," and Meg Davis does some great things with ballads like "At the Edge of the Forest" and "Women of Steel." Shadow Stalker is also great, if only because it's Heather Alexander. The bad songs are pretty annoying, I think, but the good ones are REALLY good. Buy the whole CD just for "Shadow Lover." That's a $17 song, right there. Lovers, Lore, and Loss is pretty decent, and I think if you like the others, you'll like it too. They replace Larry Warner as Dirk with another guy (Steve Can'tremember), whom I did not like as well, but on the other hand, they replaced Misty as Selenay with Shandeen, who's really fabulous. All her songs are good, especially "Cost of the Crown." I was never deeply impressed by Oathbreakers, although it has two or three nice songs. I don't know where you'd find good traditional Celtic music, but if you like the urban fantasy thing, you might like Celtic rock. I would recommend either Falls Road (Shandeen's band), The New St. George, or Tempest as excellent Celtic rock bands. All three have stuff available from Firebird; take your pick. Forgive the long post, but I have the heart and soul of a reviewer. You should read my 3-page Fantasy Top Ten, which I wrote just for fun one night :) Critical, but in a good way, HTH ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Feb 1996 12:14:06 CST From: Heather Watson To: Subject: Re: Felise Message-ID: <09FEB96.13214012.0088.MUSIC-+AT+-NEMOMUS> Felise and I had a long talk about her decision to join a group on the list. (yes, I am working my way sloooowly through digests :-) If someone in Valdemar is born with mindgifts, but without the qualities that make a Herald, I suppose that he or she will just sort of muddle along with what they can learn from Priests, or Healers who happen by. Nine times out of ten, I'll bet that the gifts are too minor to cause concern. Or that they are gifts which are suited to the convenience of the person's community. Think of the weather witch Talia meets in AFlight. There is an example of a woman with Foresight. It is a particular kind of Foresight, usually, aimed at weather, but capable of being used to foresee non-weather events on occasion. (Her prediction for Talia, for example.) No companion has come knocking on her door, nor is one likely to. So, no intervention is needed. In cases where a person is a thought senser, the Healers are perfectly capable of teaching basic shielding. (Which, for someone who doesn't want the gift, is tantamount to a cure.) What about the tenth time? When the person has a gift which they refuse to control, or can't control, or use in a harmful way? Well, we have two strong clues. The first comes from Oathbreakers, when Kethry builds the mirror eggs. She has adapted a technique she learned about from Roald which is used to teach _people who can't learn to contol projective gifts_. The second clue is the one we learn from Vanyel's concern over Medren and Stefan when they come close to misusing their Bardic Gifts. He warns each of them that if they misuse their Gifts, _they will be stripped of them._ I forget the exact language, but the implication is that Gifts can be blocked so that they are no longer available to be used. And in cases where a youngster shows the promise of an exceptional Gift, I think that Heather may be right in guessing that he/she would be Chosen anyway, to come and live with a whole bunch of people that feel that exceptional Gifts mean exceptional responsibilities. A thirteen-year-old is still in the process of developing a self-image, and very susceptible to hero worship. It might not always work (at least one person besides Tylendel has been repudiated) but it probably works pretty often. Yoicks! and Away! Not take the dictionary definition as gospel? ME??? Well... it depends...." :-> Okay, I've got to respond to this one. Yes, the final authority for Valdemar is Misty. That's a given. But the encyclopedia, dictionary, books on Wicca, study of Earth history, and all of those things are also valid sources of information. We are using a common language, and a common planet to discuss a place that is foreign to all of us, so we can only talk about things as they compare. (umm.. that was a lousy sentence... let me try again...) If Misty were using a word, "consort" to mean something totally unrelated to the dictionary definition. (Vanyel went to the consort and got out a new green shirt with silver buttons....) then we would have to skip the dictionary and use nothing but the text. The way we do with words that are in Tayledras or Shin'a'in, or the way we do with the word "Companion" which has a distinctly new definition in the books. But the meaning of "consort" in Valdemar is at least close to the "earth" definition, so it helps us understand how Misty's using it when we look at the various ways in which it is used here. One of the definitions is "partner" after all, which is also useful. It's like carving an elephant from a block of wood, we can use other references for the rough work, even if we will have to use Misty for the final details. I hope that made sense. Yoicks! and Away! Unfortunately, many modern churches forget that aspect. But! atonement is still part of the Christian tradition. Unfortunately, it's one that people are all too quick to forget--it's a lot easier to just say, "Yep, God forgives me and so should you" than it is to try to fix what you screwed up. ObMisty: I forget who, but somebody said something about the Di Tregarde books being discontinued. Is this true????? I'm crushed! I *love* Di Tregarde! Say it ain't so! The title on the cover is "The Collected Works of Anne McCaffrey, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Piers Anthony, Elizabeth Moon, Jody Lynn Nye, Andre Norton, Terry Brooks, Wendy Pini, Richard Pini, David Eddings, AND Mercedes Lackey. Then, just for fun, he tosses an even _larger_ book (1 ton, Advoirdupois, 908 kg, Metric) entitled "Bug List For Latest Version of Windows '95." Feeling particularly mischevious now, McW starts posting woodchuck questions to rec.humor.oracle. ___________________ -==UDIC==- ________________ |\__________________\ McCaffrey's White Dragon |\________________\ ||Why is he talking | || | || to that | a.k.a. || Don't ask. | || White Coconut? | Jake Gipple \|________________| \|__________________| (360)-887-4779 LEMUR!
