Anyway, there's been quite a few messages on the subject of normality, and this just happens to be a favorite disscussion area for me. I am proud to be a FREAK. (Or, all the freaks in my school call themselves FREAPS). Being like everyone else is just so generic. People think I'm weird because I go up to strangers and ask them if they love mayonnaise. For Christmas, I decorated an entire tree with Mayonnaise packets. Why? Because it makes me laugh. I can't think of any better reason to do something (well yes I can, but that includes being philosophical). For Holloween, I dressed up in a Herald costume--all day--at a very conservative school. The looks I got were those of fear, confusion, or merriness. I guess it's just how you look at things. Well, what I'm trying to say, is that everyone should be funky because it makes life just so much more enjoyable, plus, as an added bonus, you won't someday crack and shoot thousands of people. AotQ, p. 271. The speaker is Ylsa, and she is speaking in the presence of Dean Elcarth. "They (Companions) don't Choose where evil is -- and on the very rare occasion where someone has been corrupted past redemption -- and the last was two hundred years ago -- they will repudiate their Chosen." Since Tylendel lived 600 years before Talia's time, he can't be the Herald Ylsa is talking about. So, there have been other Heralds who have been repudiated their Chosen, but it is an exceedingly rare event. Less rare, perhaps, is the trainee who gives up. In rereading AotQ I find that Talia is offered the chance to give up and go home not once, but twice, and the Blues harrassed her in the hopes she would quit (which, if it were completely unheard of, would not have been their first choice of action.) And rules exist to deal with trainees who misbehave. The Book, which lists Skif's infractions, would not be something even Talia speaks of in Capital Letters, unless it were something which recorded the misdeeds of all trainees (implying that there are trainee misdeeds to record.) And there is that rule about suspension, to go clean stables. I wonder which young trainee aggravated the Circle and Council into establishing that little Sword of Damocles.... If you reread Teren's speech to the Orientation class about graduating with the inability to never give less than your best, (AotQ p.118) it's pretty clear that some part of a Herald's training is, in a sense, indoctrination.
