LHM and Arrows are almost the only books that can make me cry consistently at certain parts (the other I can think of right now is the death of Robinton in McCaffery's _All the Weyrs of Pern_). As time goes on, I care less about the new characters. I like Kerowyn, Elspeth, and Darkwind, but not as much as Talia, Vanyel, Tarma, and Kethry. Skandranon and Amberdrake are pretty good. But I don't really care for Karal too much. >- Why did Karal survive? How come that there's always happy endings in Her >novels? I don't know why .>but I think that Misty's newer books are way better than the older ones.. .. .Huh. IMHO, the earlier books were much better. LHM and Arrows are .almost the only books that can make me cry consistently at certain .parts LHM is a crying book indeed. I just felt so bad for Van at some points, it was very depressing. Mage Storms is okay, and I had to pull myself through White Gryphon. Maybe because Misty has to fit everything new into an existing framework and she has less space to work with... although a trilogy about Iftel would be cool.... .>How come that there's always happy endings in Her .>novels? I mean - even tLHM ended happily, and there the main character .>*died.* .It's more the fact that it's kind of a Bad Thing (tm) when the main .character of a trilogy dies before it's over. :) Happy endings? I remember complaining to Stormcloud how *depressing* these books were. Stefan went to kill himself, and then waited all that time just so he could be with Van. He must have had a very depressing rest of his life. Where's the joy in that? That he got *back* with Van after all that time? .>- Technology. I don't like it at all. When steam-engines start popping up in .>fantasy books I panic. Please, I don't want a Science-Fantasy Valdemar. .>. .I wish that the tech would stay out of Valdemar too. What's wrong with technology? Okay, there's a problem with tech when we get into something more "Steampunk," but science *does* have a place in a fantasy world. This isn't something like SPACE: 1889 or even CASTLE FALKENSTEIN here (forgive the RPG references, they're all I know). It's not like Elspeth, when faced with a pack of Wyrsa, is going to pull a Buck Rogers super laser out of her pocket and shoot it, or that Darkwind is going to use a tricorder to help him with his scouting. This isn't like Christopher Stasheff, who must be more Science-Fantasy than Valdemar could ever be... but I digress. I like when we see a little primitive science in Fantasy. Of course, it's typically the *wizards* in high fantasy who study science at one point along with magic, not some blue collar scientists out of another school. But it's a normal progression. Once we trip into blunderbusses and wheel-lock pistols and steam engines running everything, then I suppose I'll agree with no tech in Valdemar.
