I think this is because the tayledras serve the shin'a'in goddess in a totally different capacity than the heralds do. Besides, Darkwind is a full mage with a good head on his shoulders and not likely to be making any 'heraldic' decisions so why would he need a companion. Also if chosen he would have the training to go through and other duties a herald needs to preform that would take his mind of the crisis at hand (the mage storms) lots of reasons for him not to be chosen Ashke ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Feb 1996 17:30:59 CST From: Heather Watson To: Subject: Re: Leslie Fish (No OB Misty) Message-ID: <13FEB96.18917955.0062.MUSIC-+AT+-NEMOMUS> I just have to stick up for Leslie Fish -- just once, then I'll leave you alone. Yes, she has a very harsh, jagged voice (Leslie "I-Ate-Glass-For-Lunch" Fish ), and YES, she's a chain-smoker which may explain it. But I think she's a fabulous musician. The Velgarth music doesn't really show Leslie off to her best advantage. It's written to be lighter and prettier, with a few exceptions. Leslie's own music is usually fierce and...well, fierce is the best word I can think of to describe it. It's extremely passionate, extremely intense, ferocious. If you can, try to hear her sing at a con. Request "Roll Down, Lord" (a Midsummer song) or "Cool Johnny" (based on a short story by Harlan Ellison, and my personal favorite Leslie Fish song, which I've never been able to find on tape), or just listen to her sing. She really amazed me every time I've seen her. Of course, you may still hate her voice. Which is your Constitutional right (at last check -- gotta keep an eye on those Constitutional rights). But at least I'll feel better. And that's all I really care about. Darkwind already has a job. He's a Tayledras adept and is needed to cleanse the land of magic (and, of course, teach attractive young Heirs to the Throne on the side ;>) Of course, he's planning to stay in Valdemar, no? Her most effective stuff, IMO, has been the stuff with the smallest cast of characters. In LHM, there was really only Vanyel, and Stef in the second book -- Savil and Tylendal were important, but obviously secondary characters. In Arrows, it was the Talia-Dirk-Kris trio, backed up with secondaries like Skif. By the Sword had Kerowyn...just Kerowyn. The problem I have with the later series is that the characterization is spread to thin. Even in a trilogy, there isn't time to bond as deeply with a cast that includes Elspeth, Darkwind, Firesong, gryphons, Nyara, and all the characters from the old books, all trying to get their special time, not to mention having to share the stage with the bad guy, who gets more lines than Elspeth. Misty does characters very well, and the more intimately she handles them, the better it works. That's just her style. I think something that focused on two characters and the interplay between them would be a good move on Misty's part. Why not use your strengths to your advantage? That's what her characters always do when planning strategy HTH ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Feb 1996 22:10:00 -0800 (PST) From: "Kristin A. I *never* got that one before! (Viktaren I mean - Teri Lee is the cofounder and head of Firebird) I do know that Misty writes real people into her urban fantasy books - both as good guys and bad guys! Her friends get written into good roles...piss her off and you'll get a very unflattering one and a nasty death! (For instance, she admits that all the victims in _Burning Water_ were "real life nuisances" such as ex-bosses, annoying neighbors and such.) I spotted Leslie Fish in _Summoned to Tourney_, toward the end - singing in the ritual to stop the earthquake. (Anyone else know what song it is? I know, but the tape is out of print.) Some more I do think I know: The "housebroken" pet bird in _Elvenblood_ is named after Misty's Blue-streak Lory, and having read Misty's description of that bird in the Queens Own newsletter, I know she was writing pure wish-fulfillment! Kechara's namesake is another of her birds, a Goffin's cockatoo. Personally, I always thought _Podykayne_ was very well written and like most sci-fi of its era, a warning rather than a goal. It is in some senses, rather sexist, but at the same time, it's about a more-or-less dysfunctional family, with a daughter whose goal in life is to marry into position, power & money and a son who bears all the hallmarks of a genius-level amoral sociopath. Interesting reading. And someone said that Heinlein writes about *technology* and is a hard sci-fi author? Surely they jest.. I think it falls into the realms of authors-perogative-to-avoid hassles. If I were to consider it seriously, I might not agree that gay male companions have it much easier than females, but we won't go into that. Hmm, mind-magic might be of some use, and inventive Companions would no doubt manage. Whew.. how about that.. Got out of that with almost a PG rating. Not bad eh?
