I dunno. Really? I knew that hormones affect behavioural patterns, but I didn't realize (and am perhaps a little skeptical about) it changing the shape and size of brain cells. On the other hand, males tend to have larger bodies, but I'd always attributed the different hat sizes to swollen heads, rather than more [by weight] brain tissue. Hmm. Live and learn I guess. We have only to reach out and touch it, it is a part of the very fabric of the world. When our belief of magic completely dies this universe shall die. Because that magic; Hope, Dreams, Love, Beauty, Wonder, Belief, and Discovery are what make us a people. They are all part of a great Art whose workings are still a mystery but whose applications can be seen every day. If we ever lose the Art mankind shall not last the day. Let the magic that is in us roam free in our work, play, in each other, and most of all in ourselves. Message-ID: <3EA22A4662D-+AT+-apps.sbu.edu> >From: Heather Watson >Subject: Re: The future of Velgarth >I think a plotline about Sunsinger and Shadowdancer would be cool. So do I, but I think Misty has out and out said, "No Sunsinger and Shadowdancer stories," and likewise with the very early history of Valdemar. IIRC, she wants to keep that shrouded in mystery. Now, what *I* want to see is a story about Savil's early career! According to Magic's Pawn, as soon as she got to Haven's gate, Kellan sauntered up and Chose her. Can you imagine young Savil when this big white horse wanders up and says, "Hi. You're coming with me." Sorry, folks, but she's my favorite all time Misty character, even over Vanyel. A collection of all the Tarma and Kethry stories in a single volume would be cool, too. >Misty really needs to get back to working with a very few major >characters and going into depth on them and their relationships. I >think that's what she does best. I think you're right, but I'd also have to say that she's getting better at the more diversified and complex plotlines. IMHO, Winds of Fate was an absolute disaster. I hated it. But she does the same thing 300% better in the Storms books, i.e. switching between two points of views/plots [Valdemar/Karal and Hardorn/Tremane]. Also, if you think about it, yes, she's fairly littered with secondary characters these days, but the main POV (point of view) characters are still very few. Take The Black Gryphon, for instance. There's Skan, Amberdrake, Winterhart, and I *think* Zhaneel whose points of view are written at different times. Next are people we hear about but don't really get their inside view: Gesten, Zhaneel (if she doesn't belong to the preceding group), Tamsin, Cinnabar, Urtho, Vikteren, Conn Levas, Aubri, and Kechara. Then there are the people mentioned in passing, such as Lionwind and assorted Generals. In Arrows of the Queen, we had only one point of view, Talia's, but we also had Rolan, Selenay, Elspeth, Teren, Keren, Sherril, Ylsa, Dirk, Kris, Skif, Albrich, Mero, Griffon, Jeri, and a few others whose names I can't remember (such as the older Herald Talia befriends at Midwinter). Now, I know they're not all important characters, but a lot of them are. > Her most effective stuff, IMO, has been the stuff with the smallest >cast of characters. In LHM, there was really only Vanyel, and Stef in >the second book -- Savil and Tylendal were important, but obviously >secondary characters. Whoa!! Hold the boat a second! Savil and 'Lendel "secondary?" There wouldn't be any plot if not for Tylendel. Vanyel wouldn't be a Herald if not for him! (OK, granted, it was because of the dumb stunt he pulled that also got him repudiated, but anyway.) And how can Savil be secondary? Her POV is all over Magic's Pawn, 'Lendel's death, Van's initial recovery at Haven.... Her face-off with Within (IMO) is one of the best things Misty has ever written. And what about Yfandes? We don't really see her in Magic's Pawn, but she is certainly a major character in Promise. OK, I just realized you were talking about the second book, but I think you see my point. (BTW, Stef didn't show up until Magic's Price.) Even in Promise, Jervis is a major character, as Jervis's treatment of him as a child is one of the things Van has to work through. And even 'Lendel, though dead, looms largely in Promise, as Van is still working his way through his grief. >By the Sword had Kerowyn...just Kerowyn. What about Elden? Tarma and Kethry? Daren (who even has a stint with the POV)? There was more to By the Sword than Kerowyn. >The problem I have with the later series is that the >characterization is spread to thin. Even in a trilogy, there isn't >time to bond as deeply with a cast that includes Elspeth, Darkwind, >Firesong, gryphons, Nyara, and all the characters from the old >books, all trying to get their special time, not to mention having to >share the stage with the bad guy, who gets more lines than Elspeth. As far as the Winds trilogy goes, I think you're right. I think Misty had too many strings dangling about to weave a good, tight storyline. But I don't remember seeing so many past characters in the Winds. Really, only Selenay and Talia at the very beginning of Fate, and then the only "hangovers" we have are Elspeth and Skif (with a special appearance by Quenten). However, in the Storms books, there aren't *quite* so many threads hanging around, and not *quite* so many different characters. Characters from the past (such as Elspeth and Talia) make brief appearances, usually as plot devices to move the story along (Talia introduces Karal to An'desha, for instance). It's got a much better "villain," too. What I didn't like about Falconsbane was that he was a Misty-stock-bad guy: a cruel control freak with a sadistic, twisted sexuality. In Tremane, we have a bad-guy-who-isn't-a-bad-guy. You'd have to read the books to understand that bit, or I'd have to post **SPOILER** at the beginning of this message, and that wouldn't be any fun at all. :) > Misty does characters very well, and the more intimately she handles >them, the better it works. That's just her style. I think something >that focused on two characters and the interplay between them would be a >good move on Misty's part. Well, I'd have to say that if she were going to continue to write books set at the Palace/Collegium in Have, she can't really do that. There are just too many good people running around that the characters could use as resources. Besides, the Heraldic Circle is that: a circle, not just a bunch of people who all happen to dress in white and have these funny looking horses. Something that has always struck me about the Heralds is their sense of community, both in reference to their circle and Valdemar as a whole. They give up their lives, once chosen, to serve the larger community of Valdemar as a whole. They are subject to and answer to the Circle, to each other, to their own sub-community. Skif does not refer to the Circle as the family he never had for nothing. And, if you're writing about a Herald, you can't but him/her within 50 miles of another Herald without that community becoming apparent. And what about the Companions? Heralds, I've noticed, are a distinctly two-for-one deal. You don't get a Herald without a Companion. If you want two humans, if only one is a Herald, you're going to get *three* characters when that Companion sticks his pretty white nose into whatever's happening. Hence, such an isolationist plotline wouldn't work (with Heralds, mind you.) Of course, there's nothing that says Misty couldn't get a couple of Heralds lost in the Pelagirs. :) But what I really want to know is why I can sit here and prattle on about characterization in Mercedes Lackey but William Blake absolutely baffles me. :) Talk to you all later. Person? Maybe Skan? Place? I'm thinking either the city they founded or the Empire of the Black Kings. As for Thing, I have no idea, since I haven't read SG yet. Is there something in there, maybe some magical device or item that could connect the books? As for no more Velgarth books-- I highly doubt she's going to stop, not when so many people love them as much as we do. She's just been writing two trilogies simultaneously for the past year-- just because there are no books listed doesn't mean she's going to stop writing them!!! She probably needs a vacation to think of new ideas!!! :) -+AT+->--- In the name Stormcloud of the Moon One in Black I'll punish you! the Misty maniac jwil3969-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu (Note the addy change, everybody!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 1996 10:26:57 EST From: "Stormcloud" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Ones In Black Message-ID: <11A6CD86EF1-+AT+-SIMCL.STJOHNS.EDU> > Some foul deamon has consumed my account. Message-ID: Just to add more confusion on this subject, I belong to a group called the Order of the Eastern Star, and our symbolic star is the 'upside down', point-down, (whatever) star, because it represents the Star of Christmas which was a *very* important sign to Christianity, symbolizing the birth of Christ. The Order has for its foundation the bible, a belief in God, etc. BUT, because the 'upside down, etc" star Has been associated with Satan, a lot of people think we worship the Devil, etc. Just .02 more cents :} Sandy the sigless On Wed, 14 Feb 1996, Kerry Mealing wrote: > > Mel wrote: > > Hollie wrote: > > > Sorry to be so overwhelmingly Virgoish, but I must nitpick. That in itself could drive the MO mad with pain, and possibly kill him/her unless the new MOC shows up immediately to bond with him/her. -+AT+->--- In the name Stormcloud of the Moon One in Black I'll punish you! the Misty maniac jwil3969-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu (Note the addy change, everybody!!!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Feb 1996 09:51:12 CST From: Heather Watson To: Subject: Re: Tarma & Darkwind Message-ID: <14FEB96.10641754.0085.MUSIC-+AT+-NEMOMUS> Tarma's vocal cords sustained a lot of damage when she was strangled half to death during the attack on her clan. Not every upstanding, honorable person is Herald material. I don't think Darkwind had that inner drive to ruin his life and die like a dog to preserve Valdemar :) That doesn't make you a bad person; I'm not up to being a Herald either, but I consider myself fairly noble. Very, very few people have what it takes to dedicate yourself that fully to a cause. And as for Heralds and non-Heralds, the most obvious example I can think up (outside of Elspeth and Darkwind) is Vanyel and Stefan. And Skif and Nyara come to mind, too. But you're right, they're the minority. I think when you have to give that much of yourself to the job, it really helps to have a partner who understands and has been there. "Upright" Pentagrams are five pointed, single point uppermost. "Inverted" ones are five pointed, single point downward. The Star of David is a hexagram (six pointed), and can be considered as a union of the symbols for fire (upward pointing triangle) and water (downward pointing triangle), the two 'active' elements, (and also contains the symbols for the two passive elements, air and earth, upward and downward pointing triangles both with crossbars.) from there, you can delve onwards into the western magical tradition, the quaballah, (including the ten sephiroth of the tree of life), the tarot[*], symbolism, and more variants on what symbolises what and why than you can shake a stick at :-). [*] Each of the tarot suits is associated with an element; the major arcana cards are usually associated with the paths between the sephiroth, and the card designs themselves on most modern packs are derived from magical symbolism, especially the ones with illustrated minor arcana (suit) cards, which started with A.E.Waite's (Rider) deck. ObMisty: None of this seems to be present in Velgarth :-) :-). -- _|_ / | Jerry Cullingford jc-+AT+-crosfield.co.uk (Work) \_|_ jc-+AT+-selune.demon.co.uk (Home) \__/ Hemel Hempstead, UK jerry-+AT+-shell.portal.com (alternate) ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 373 *********************************
