En garde! No, just kidding. No flames. But I think a trilogy can be connected by setting and theme as well as by characters. It's certainly been done before. Um, off hand I can only think of the Chronicles of the Cheysuli series by Jennifer Roberson, which is multi-generational as well. I know there are plenty more. Granted, it's much more common to tie a series together by characters. People often bond more with characters than with milieus, although that's not always true either. I know lots of Pern fans, and most of them don't like the series because of any particular characters; they just like the style and the world. That's what the Gryphon series was supposed to do, too, I think. Now, whether they succeeded or not, I'm in no position to say, having only read The Black Gryphon. Just felt the need to comment on this, since I'm working on a five-book series that shares very few characters throughout. I still think of it as a series (quintology?), because the stories share both a setting and a "feel", I think. I hope. Actually (this IS from a log of an Arrows Online meeting from when I was on AOL), there's supposedly a reason for why WG sucked. According to it (if you're still here, AnneS3832, correct me), IIRC, MIsty nad Laary took in the wife and child of a pyrotechnics man who did SOMETHING to make them not want to be with him (abuse, probably, I don't remeber..), and he kidnapped the kid and killed himself and his child. Messy, scary, and hard on everyone involved. It as such reflected on the writing. NOTE: For all I know this may not be true, or told correctly. OTOH, there is NO such reason for SG, which DID suck, mostly because the ending was clumped together too quickly, and the first part too spread out. Then agian, MIsty HAS written a lot lately, and this may be the proof *-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-* Korendil, Knight of Elfhame Sun-Descending, Squire of the High Court, Magus Minor, One In Black, and Firstborn Child of Danaan. _____________________________________________________________________________ Email: rubin-+AT+-cent.com |Blue Bread Mold, the story must be told Email: jon_rubin-+AT+-bam_online.tfnet.com|Nothing keep you livin' like the Blue IRC: Korendil on #macintosh; Undernet|Bread Mold-- Leslie Fish *-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-*-+AT+-* ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 1996 18:19:14 -0600 From: Korendil To: "Misty List" Subject: Re: Gryphon trilogy ??? By the same, I'd rather have had BG&WG as a duology, and no SG. SG was, IMABHO, a chance to do a 'how parents worry" theme. 50% of it was them worrying. Message-ID: <199602200100.SAA08893-+AT+-usr2.primenet.com> Heyla! Well, I'm back from the Estrella War, and I'm the color of a cooked lobster, broke, and completely HAPPY! There's nothing like a good inter-kingdom conflict to content an SCAer... Since everybody seems to be giving biography's, here goes... I'm a Herald, my gifts are Double Mindspeech, stronger on the Thought-Sensing side than on Projection. My Companion is a mare, Korrenhya, or Korry for short. I have a life-bonded from Rethwellan, whose name is Raenndelys, or Raenn to his friends (and of course, me...) I have long red-gold hair, grey-blue eyes, and a, umm, er, well, if you were being nice you'd say I was stocky. Not short (5'8), but stocky... If you were being nice... I'm still hoping for a few more inches, but at sixteen, it's not bloody likely. It takes a lot to get me mad, and I'm certainly not easy to offend :) If you want to know something about me, chances are you could just ask me. I rarely bite (unless of course, you ask me very nicely...) and I'd really rather have someone ask me a personal question than sit there and wonder if I'm a complete idiot You should know for sure! Once I do get mad, I am MAD!!! I have very strong Mage-Gift, discovered since I left Valdemar, (Raenn and I have been sent to explore the new realm of Cyber-space. Shhh... Don't tell anyone, we're under-cover. I even wear green to disguise myself...) and I now work for the Ladies In Green, who are sworn to combat the evil Herald-imposters, The Men In White. Well, there you go. Anybody who cares should also know that Mareesa Raennsyr is my pen-name, and I have several stories published. You know, it's amazing how many people I've met who say that the Last Herald-Mage trilogy changed their minds about gay people and made them more accepting. I don't know of any other sci fi or fantasy book that I've heard people say affected them so personally (great Scott, was that a tortured sentence), with the possible exception of Ender's Game. I think Vanyel was the first gay person a lot of us knew well. That was certainly true for me, and he made things much easier emotionally for me when I came out. (Yes, I know I'm talking about him as if he were real. You'll have to forgive me; I do that. Too many years reading and writing.) After three books, it just seemed so NORMAL for Vanyel to love Stefan. Who else could he possibly have loved? And if Vanyel was normal, then so was I. Thank goodness the fantasy field is becoming more open about sexuality all the time, and really dealing with the issue seriously. Books like Ecstasia, Swordspoint, Gossamer Axe, and others (which naturally escape my mind at present) are really excellent, and quite moving. It's nice to feel like your chosen genre isn't scared to talk about you. :) HTH ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 380 *********************************
