IMHO, Vanyel was the MOST believable hero she ever wrote about. Van was most definitely not without flaws! He was incredibly stubborn at times, given to MAJOR fits of self-pity and self-loathing. I thought Van was anything but perfect! He reflected a part of me that I had never even realized was in me until I read the books, and it scared me how real it was. (I may be willfully ignoring some of his faults (blocking them from memory! ) While I don't rank myself among Elspeth _haters_, I'm not her biggest fan. I think the way she treated Skif was mean; even though I know how it feels to have someone like you amorously and not have the same feelings, for them, I still think she could have been more sensitive. She did get on my nerves, though I did believe in her. Okay, granted, Elspeth in the Winds books is acting a bit of the Brat -- especially early on. And she does throw a temper tantrum, of sorts, when she refuses to get pushed into the Great Plan. But let's look at the circumstances here. Elspeth got Chosen when she was not quite fourteen (Aflight p. 18). She was probably about sixteen when Ancar first attacked (figuring a year and a half for Talia's internship and six months into Talia's first year as Queens Own before the end of AFall). According to the intro to WoFate, it was two years before Kero and Daren pulled Valdemar's fat out of the fire between them -- which makes her eighteen (and on her internship) then. And again, according to the intro, but also the internal evidence (Selenay's twins are about six at the beginning of WoFate) you need to add another seven years to bring us up to the beginning of WoFate. Which makes Elspeth twenty-five. And the apron strings are still firmly attached! No wonder Elspeth acts a bit childish at times! No one is treating her like an adult! Except maybe Kero, who, it appears, has been busily trying to cram a great deal of information into the young Heir's head. (Like how to speak Shin'a'in.) Elspeth has been in Whites for seven years, and yet the Council still doesn't trust her to work away from Haven. And for six of those years, there have been _two_ other potential Heirs! Contrast that to Roald, who had his own hunting lodge down in the roughest part of the Comb, and who was allowed to take a vacation all the way down to the Dhorisha plains! And the Companions have _known_ for at least twelve years that Elspeth was going to be the first of the new Herald-Mages. When Gwena arrived, Elspeth was thirteen. The barriers against mages must have already weakened. (At least enough for Companions like Sayvil, who had been mages in a previous life to detect.) I grant you that the first new Herald-Mage would probably need a grove-born companion, for the increased endurance if nothing else. Look at how often Vanyel had to ride for leagues to be in place to do something no one else knew how to do. The real question becomes then, what the hell were the Companions waiting for? I think it was for Elspeth to have learned the things Kero had to teach her. And since Kero was probably out of Haven quite a bit, dealing with Ancar's "incursions", there was a delay. And since no one has bothered to explain to Elspeth why she is sitting in Haven cooling her heels while every other Herald is out risking their necks on a regular basis, she figures that the council thinks she's a hothead and her mother doesn't trust her. There are probably times when she wonders if she wasn't given her Whites under false pretences. No wonder she itched to get away on a legitimate mission! Here's another question to toss into the fray. Why did _Need_ chose Elspeth? Yoicks! and Away! I believe she was doing what she *thought* was best for Valdemar. . . isn't that all any of us can do? The best we can at the time? No, we don't know that our chosen course of action will turn out to be the "best" possible choice. If we waited for that kind of certainty, we wouldn't do anything at all. I don't remember reading that she had Foresight to any great degree. I don't think her response was selfish at all - I think it was pretty sensible. Her goal was to get training in magecraft. She got that. It turned out well. Valdemar benefitted. Her actions were valid. 'Nuff said. To change the subject - did anyone else wonder about the portrayal of Herald Lores in LHM? I'm currently rereading it, and just got to that part. How could a Chosen Herald actually BEAT another Companion? Why would a Chosen Herald believe a Companion was a demon? I know it was semi-explained, but it just didn't ring true to me. (thanks, Mel) The gates are opening! They're off!!!!! <--look five!!!!!) In an earlier screed -- which hopefully hasn't been lost to the ether -- I defended Elspeth's actions in WoFate on the basis that the woman was all of twenty-five at the beginning of the book and by every bit of evidence we've seen was still being treated like a trainee. Can't leave Haven, you might get hurt *pah!* If you're treated like a child, you'll act like one once in a while, and if you manage to still consider the consequences of your tantrum and arrange for a feasible alternative, then you're doing pretty good. For pete's sake, even Quenten acted like she wasn't old enough to be told harsh truths. Who did he warn about Elspeth's tasty appearance to predatory mages? Skif, that's who. Not Elspeth. And let's remember that Elspeth has been spending a lot of time in the historical records lately. She can't help but notice the difference between the treatment she is given and the treatment accorded earlier Heirs. Which leads me to Roald, who is the only Heir we've seen other than those in Vanyel's time. Roald got to have a hunting lodge that wasn't exactly the far end of Valdemar from Karse. Roald got to go to the Dhorisha plains. (And why didn't _he_ look like a snack for a predatory mage, I wonder? The mage potential Vanyel passed down through the royal line had to have reached Elspeth via Roald. Or did the Rethwellan "earth witches" that Daren spoke of add the necessary DNA through Karathanelan to activate the potential?) Roald got to make decisions -- really important decisions, like treaties with allies -- without having the Council second guess his every motive. And if someone suggests that Roald got all of those priveleges and responsibilities because he was a boy, I'll be very disappointed. I am not Elspeth's greatest fan, by the way. There are plenty of people in Valdemar I'd rather meet. But I do find her actions believeable, and her characterization consistent. We aren't shown the seven years of patient play-the-role-of-Heir-but-don't-take-on-any-real-responsibility she had to endure between the end of BTS and the beginning of the Winds books. When Talia tamed the Brat, she also made Elspeth vulnerable to a kind of manipulation that says, "If you aren't doing what I think you should be doing then you are selfish." And that makes a lever that says, "if you are not doing what Council and Queen want you to, then you are being unherald-like" which is one step away from "if you are not _thinking_ what we tell you to...." Elspeth had to break out of that. She had to develop her own sense of judgement, and it's a darn good thing that she had Kero as a role-model so she could re-learn that sometimes a little stubbornness can work in everyone's favor. Whew! And there I thought I was going to just rip off a quick comment! I missed you guys! Yoicks! and Away! Message-ID: <31D01265B1E-+AT+-medicine.dmed.iupui.edu> Hi All! Aaaaarrrgh!! After rereading the first three and a half books of the Wheel of Time series to be ready for the new one, I just tracked down a nasty rumor I found on the net, and it's true. Robert Jordan's _A Crown of Swords_ is delayed, and won't be out until June (although Barnes & Noble says May). Sigh. I just got an e-mail back from Tor Books, and apparently, Jordan was late with the final manuscript. I figured that the rest of you who are reading the series would want to know. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news! Anytime my boyfriend sees me crying over a book, he threatens to take it away and never let me read those kinds of books again (as if he could stop me!). Last night, he came in and said, "but xxx's family died the first time you read it......" (The Great Hunt by R. Jordan). He just doesn't get it. You can bet I'll never let him see me reading the end of MPrice!!! Or, of course, AFall! They were a bit corny at times, but I > liked Di as a character, and _really_ liked Andre! Woah, baby! :) > Anyway, I thought they were much worse than corny. I liked Di, too. Sort of. And I agree that Andre is yummy. However, the stories were so rife with factual errors that they are practically impossible for me to read. Maybe the problem is that they are to close to the Primary World. I can't help but apply Real World knowledge to them. Just as the most glaring problem, if I can recognize the basic villain of Burning Water after the first crime, surely a trained occultist should have been able to do so. And don't say that her memory was suppressed by the psychic trap that Tezcatlipoca had left in place. The timing is wrong. She should have recognized the provenance of the crimes before she ever conducted her psychic search. The other books are equally rife with similar problems. I hate those books precisely because I expected so much more from Misty (and from Di). Also, am I the only one who felt that Jinx High was reverse snobbery? Yeah, there are some rich kids at Jenks (I should add that I am from Tulsa, OK), but they are not as rich, nor as spoiled, as the book makes them out. I have never heard of, nor seen, a school with the kind of student body that she describes. Part of it seems to be a case of watching too much 90210 (and believing it) and the other part seems to be a diatribe against the local community where she lives. Anyway, since this was started by my request not to talk about Di Tregarde, I will keep my own verbage brief and end here. Sorry to sound so negative. I really, really do like Misty's writing. Just not that series. They have the occasional problem, but I thought they were funny and exciting. But then, I like urban fantasy a lot, so I may be biased. I suppose it's even conceivable that I'm biased because Di was (IMO) the sexiest Mercedes Lackey heroine ever. (Her men are always so much more attractive than her women...probably because her main audience is straight females, who want to identify with the female characters and fall in love with the males.) But, in spite of all that, I still think they were good books. What was so horrible about them? HTH ------------------------------ End of MERCEDES-LACKEY Digest 386 *********************************
