Did this one myself. Have fun. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Top Ten Ways You Can Tell You Read Too Much Mercedes Lackey ========================================================================= 10. You sit around wondering how well Vanyel can do against other fantasy sorcerers. YOU: "Now, Vanyel against Belgarath..." NORMAL MISTY FAN: "What are you talking about?" 9. You look for a way to tie *all* of Misty's books together. YOU: "So, if we look at Diana Tregarde, and we look at the way *she* does magic, it's the same as when Vanyel..." NORMAL MISTY FAN: 8. You bought a white horse of your very own. YOU: "And this is my companion, Bella." 7. Your credit card bill at Firebird Arts & Music is more than your tuition; you have a standing order there for *every* new Misty work that comes out; and they know you there by name. YOU: "Hello, Firebird?" TELEPHONE: "Oh! Hi Jake! How are you? Your $200 order is coming in the mail soon, and we've placed a pre-order for the third book in the Vows and Honor Trilogy for you." 6. You slavered over the thought that there *might* be a third book in the Vows & Honor series. (There isn't). INTERNET RUMOR PERSON: "So, the third book is called "Oathblinded." YOU: "Really? Really? Really?" 5. Your friends never let you bring music to parties because you only bring filk, and you always *insist* that they play all of _Shadow Stalker_. YOU: "Man, Heather Alexander's voice is like gold!" YOUR NORMAL FRIEND: "Who in the world is Heather Alexander?" 4. Not only that, but you *liked* "Herald's Creed." YOU: "I mean, it's so majestic." NORMAL MISTY FAN: "Oh, please." 3. You are fluent in Shin'a'in, Tayledaras, and the Hawkbrother tongues, and use these words in daily conversation. YOU: "Heyla, Boss!" YOUR BOSS: "Heyla? What are you talking about?" 2. You go berserk over the correct pronunciation of Vanyel's name. YOU: "VAHN-yel? No! It's van-YEL!" 1. You sit around writing lists like this one. And I've found Elspeth's character development more, ah, realistic and understandable (because it took some time -several years-) than say, that of Winterhart. I was fairly annoyed with that character (I've only read BG so far, so that's what I'm basing my opinion on). She gets her vertebrae put back into place and the emotional trauma dealt with and - POOOF!- turns into a sweet and loveable and utterly nice and placid person. Argh! Not bloody likely. No, I'd rather have somebody like Elspeth (yes, she was a bit of a nuisance in WoFate, but what would the books have been without the part of her character developing? and I can _very_ well understand her impatience with other people, being rather impatient myself, sometimes) or Kero, or Need, for that matter (I liked that grim sense of humour). That aside, I didn't think that _Jinx High_ or _Burning Water_ were as good as _CotN_, but I've never quite figured out why. JH's plot limped somewhat; also, I never could quite get into American books with people at school owning and driving cars. (The driving age in the UK is 17, and it's unusual for those still at school to own a car -- and _very_ unusual for them to drive to school. Generally there is no parking for students within a school. But I digress.) BW did make much too much of the "locking off Di's memory" plot token, and I don't think it merited it. On the third hand (I will end up looking like Kali if I am not careful), the Tregarde books are not served well by shops which shelve them as "horror" (caveat: I have a sneaky feeling that that is the category given on the spine for at least one of them, probably COTN; someone shoot the publisher). They're not horror. They're 'urban fantasy' (or at least that is the closest label I can pull from my mind for them, though I'm not convinced it fits). They're also fairly lightweight. Anyone expecting seriously dark and gruesome stuff is reading the wrong book.... I like the Tregarde books more than I like Tanya Huff's near-equivalents, the Victory Nelson stories, primarily because of Di herself. She's always seemed to me a much better-drawn character; more solid, a better past history, etc. We can see why Di is as she is; I don't get that feeling about Vicky, although I accept that it's harder to do that justification with a medical problem rather than a psychological problem. And Andre really doesn't do a whole lot for me. I can see Di in my mind's eye, I can't see Andre. :) Your mileage, as they say, will vary. Bibliography: Has been held up somewhat by Vanyel's recent demise (my server, not the fictional character we all know and love). Hopefully I will get more time to work on it this week; I'm going to keep all the info in a database and then generate the pages automatically. Well, that's the general idea. FAQ: Due for another overhaul, in particular: - I will be including my post of a month or so back about Auntie Mel's Guide to List Etiquette as part of the FAQ. - I will be adding a pointer to it in the list's introductory posting, with a request that people read it before starting to post to the list. - the Bibliography will be split into two sections, one for books, one for short stories. - I really am going to expand the list of "Frequently Discussed Topics". - no doubt there are 101 other things I could add. Mail me if you can think of significant lacks. General list stuff: Someone asked me recently whether it would be possible to put the list archives into something like Hypermail (which, for those of you who don't know, allows you to read the list via the Web). Sadly, it's not going to happen anytime soon. You know how big the archives are at the moment? (Including the old archives from our previous site.) 29Mb. That's a _lot_ of messages. Lots. Really. The problem with Hypermail (and its relatives) is that the archives would have to be held in a different format to that which Listproc uses. Quite apart from the minor hassles of keeping them synchronised, that means that there would be 29Mb sitting about on the disk twice. I may try and implement a slightly more sensible Web interface for the digests at some point -- split them up by months, or something -- but again I do not expect this to happen particularly soon. Request: Could someone with a copy of digest 384, sent out on the morning of Saturday 24th, please send me a copy? Trying to archive it appears to have been what Vanyel was trying to do when his power supply died, and I have only a zero-length file to show for it. He was the antidote to the sugar-shock I go into every time someone in a ML book goes on a kick about how Heralds are perfect, Heralds never hurt anyone, Heralds always do the right thing. Since, by and large, Heralds are the heroes of the various series, I'd like to be able to identify with them. And I can do that if the key is that they're good people who want to help others. But I can't do that if you get a handbook with All the Answers as soon as you get your Whites. I realize it's fantasy, but a *little* realism would be nice. Lores was a nice guy. We know this because he's a Herald, and we also see it later in the book. But he had made up his mind that Tashir was a killer and a consorter with demons, and by God, that's all there was to it. Sometimes people who *know* they are good fall into the trap of believing that they know what's right and best in every situation, and that happened to Lores. So he was not willing to accept that he could have been so totally wrong about Tashir that the boy could get Chosen. That just sounded nonsensical to Lores. Absurd. Keep in mind that Valdemar is at undeclared war with Karse, and the Karsites are unhealthily fond of sending demons after Heralds. Lores was probably scared to death to see a demon, and he reacted with (as Captain Janeway would say) the deadliest of force, to protect everyone involved. A demon is not something you sit down and talk to. Now, he was wrong. Dead wrong, and the consequences were pretty severe. Sometimes that happens, and apparently it even happens to Heralds. I like that idea a lot. The entire Lores incident is a major part of what makes me believe that LHM was the most subtle, complex, and intelligent of Misty's series. (I'll save my other arguments for future posts) Oh, and I apologize to those of you who think we overElspethed. But I have to say, this *is* a list devoted to the discussion of Mercedes Lackey's books, and I do think that analysis of one of her major characters falls within those parameters. Some people are still enjoying the thread, and I think it has a right to live. I'll give y'all the same advice I was given when I complained about the mage-war: skip the thread if it doesn't interest you. Apparently, if someone is going to be Queen's Own is not Chosen with a bonded Choosing (don't ask me how, the Companions know). I think it's sort of like Florian and Karal in MageStorms. After the MOC shows up, I guess the Companion just hangs around and waits for his/her Chosen to arrive. Speaking of which, is Misty ever going to adress the topic of why all these Herald-candidates go to Haven? Very few Companions have to go outside the city, it seems. She seemed to have just thrown together the ending for a deadline, after the way she worked so much on detail throughout the rest of the book. Jinx high had the ideas, but was not a really good book, doesn't even seem on the same lines as any of her other books in the way of style. After reading some of her other series, I also begin to wonder what particular order did she write these books in?!? Since her normal tendency seems to make the middle book a filler, and doesn't work as hard on it (apparantly). I know that when a Herald is, I guess, _destined_ to be Chosen as an MO when the old MO dies, that Herald bonds very lightly with their Companion, so that when he/she is re-Chosen, the old Companion can Choose again. The reason I like this list so much is because of all the different theories that come up when we talk about something. It's called VARIETY people, and it's the reason there are subject headings on the posts. If you're sick of the bitch/not-bitch debate, then skip it. I know, I know, digests, but I get other lists as digests, and it doesn't take that long to zip past something you're not interested in. And it IS a Misty list... At least we didn't start the coconut fight again... You forgot #11! You send a post in, to the guy who wrote the list, and correct his spelling of a Hawkbrother word! Sorry Rynath, but it's Zhai'helleva Unless you're using some obscure Shin'a'in spelling. And I can go look that up too! Really, I've got nothing but time! Lady 'Reesa P.S. Please excuse my nit-picking. I just found out that my Grandmother died last night, and attempting humor has always been my way of dealing with grief. Everybody is talking about their reactions to deaths in Mercedes books so I figure I should put my $.02 in. I cried when Tylendel died (still do when I reread the book), I cried when Kris died (still do when I reread the book), and I cried when Talia was in the dungeon in Hardorn (don't reread that part, I don't like it:-)). Also, though I hate to bring up something that was already discussed I just finished Storm Rising a few days ago (don't laugh, it took me awhile because I had to wait for my dad to read it then wait for my mom to read it!) and there is more proof of Stef being both himself and Tylendel! Sorry to those who already knew that but I have been a bit of a skeptic on the part about Stef being both him and 'Lendel. Ahem, page 124 paragraph 1, "All his adult life he had cherished a secret longing, born when he had learned about his ancestor Vanyel and the love and lifebonding that had lasted through time and across the ages with his beloved Tylendel-Stefen." That is it but for those that are as skeptic as me (if there are any) I thought I'd give a little more proof. Zhai'helleva! I have ALWAYS wondered that. I asked my mom (she is the one who introduced me to Mercedes Lackey) and she got this real thoughtful look and then said something like, "You know, I have no idea." Like that really helped me! So all I ask is that if yu plan on responding privately respond to me too! Thanks ever so much! Zhai'helleva! Lady Moonsong An Honorable Lady In Green Raingcats-+AT+-aol.com P.S. Is there a book somewhere full of really neat signatures? I ask this because I need to come up with a new sig and am in need of help. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Feb 1996 19:12:23 -0500 From: Joshua Jones To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Top Ten Ways to know you read too much Misty Message-ID: <1.5.4b11.32.19960229001223.00670a94-+AT+-ix.netcom.com> At 12:36 PM 2/28/96 GMT, you wrote: >Okay.
