ME> Lady Becky Yeah, and later, after the Tashir affair was pretty much over and Vanyel was making the appointments, didn't he appoint LORES to be one of the councilors? Sorry, folks, but this just doesn't stand up to close scrutiny! I believe it may be a slight plot error. Granted, Heralds are human, they make mistakes, as someone else posted (can't remember who, sorry!) but come on . . . this seems a bit much. First Vanyel practically BANISHES Lores back to Haven, then all of a sudden he's back and one of Tashir's councillors? Nope, can't buy that. I think Heralds are chosen because of the type of person they are - not the type to go hysterical like that. Basically good people, idealistic, unselfish, etc. There are plenty of instances where Heralds are portrayed as being VERY much like all of us, insecure, frightened, confused, petty, vengeful. The difference being, they tend to wake up pretty quick (perhaps because of a few choice words from their Companion?), quicker than we do. Granted, again, Lores couldn't mindspeak with his Companion. But for cryin' out loud, he wasn't BLIND! What was his Companion doing while he was freakin' out? Certainly not standing around going, no, no, mustn't do that, dear! Sorry to go on so long. This inconsistency bothers me, more this reading than before. I believe that it said, somewhere, that the reason Need finally woke up was because Kero acutally fought her. Kethry pretty much let Need run her up and down. The original reason that she fell asleep, or so I'd gathered, was because there was a time when she "could only bond t fighters." I guess after that none of her bearers were much of a challange, until Kero showed up on the scene. I think having someone as stubborn as Kero bending her will would be plently to wake her up. And I'm sure it said that she actually was awake when they first entered Valdemar. When Need was showin' Skif and Elspeth her past, she said that she woke up, but kept quite because of the "borders." That's another thing, I can't see why it would bother her to have the Vrondi (excuse the spelling, if it's wrong. . .) staring at her. . . And that _was_ the spell, wasn't it? The little fellows would stare at the mage, unless they were accompinied by a Companion, until they could tell another Herald Mage. So would it _really_ bother her? But then, if she _was_ awake, then it might be annoying. . . Goodness, I've landed in the kettle. Now I'm even more confused then when I started... remind me not to go off on a tizzy, because the only one I confuse is myself. Hmmm... I had another question, but it's clean slipped my mind. A story here for any BORED souls: I was going to check my mail, and my friend wanted to talk to me. I told him I'd stay, if he could answer my question about the Queen's Own and Companions and such forth. Here's what he said: "Well, you see, this is what happened. What was that guys name again? Oh, yeah, Ancar. . . well he was IN LOVE with, who's the girl? Sherril? Okay, sound's good. This Ancar fellow, well he loves Sherril. What? Why are you laughing? Ancar's the BAd guy? Well, he was just expressing his love for her in the only way he could. He killed who? Well, Kris wasn't important. Why'd you hit me? Stop it. You mean this book I'm holding WASN'T written by the same author?? Oh.. Lackey, McCaffrey, what's the difference? WHAT? Why do you keep throwing books at me? STOP IT! Lores seemed to be two feathers short of a headdress, but there is some sort of explanation. Lores' Companion couldn't mindspeak with him after he started beating the other one because of the "conflict" inside her. Lores didn't Mindspeak that much anyway, and he wasn't beating *his* companion but another's, which he thought was a demon and which his Companion didn't say anything about. Do all Companions broadcast their true nature to all Heralds? If a Herald saw a white horse, even one with blue eyes for argument's sake would she confuse it with a real Companion who simply isn't speaking? If not, then how could Lores know it was a Companion *really?* A demon could, theoretically, illuse itself as a Companion and fool a little-or-non-mindspeaking Herald like poor ol' Lores. Proof? Just look what that demon did to the bandit from Oathbreakers, turning him into a woman for all intents and purposes. It wasn't just a surface illusion of womanhood, it was a really really strong one... (BTW I had to search for Herald Lores in LHM... for those wondering where he is, it's pages 148-9 of the USA paperback version of Magic's Promise, a little bit into Chapter seven.) I, too, thought "dark fantasy" was a good label for the Tregarde .books. A common characteristic of dark fantasy is that it's a little ."more" than the real world: a little more dangerous, a little less .friendly, fewer bright lights, whatever. I think that accounts for some .of the over-the-topness in Jinx High. No, in the real world, rich high .school students aren't that sinister. But in Diana Tregarde's .demon-infested world, maybe they are. Remember, most urban fantasy has .its own "world" just like high fantasy does...it's just harder to see .the rules sometimes, because the differences are more subtle. Yes! Dark Fantasy (like the "Gothic-Punk" setting that White Wolf uses in its WORLD OF DARKNESS SERIES) is a place of extremes. It's pushing the possibilities a bit further and letting shadow take over a bit. THe darks are a bit darker, and the lights are a bit dimmer. It's a bit *twisted* (or is that more twisted) than Life As We Know It. It's not *exactly* like the world we live in (although if there are any successful practicing magicians or vampires out there, please let me know ). The general impression I got from what I can remember of the Di series is just that. The whole setting seemed to be completely dark (even the Talldeer stuff). Or is it that more interesting things happened when it was dark? (Lecture on Writing vs School Party from Hell in _Jinx High,_ for example.) First it just proves the point that they were prejudiced on the basis of physical "type." Changechildren were seen as bad, having a "stigma." Second, the idea that most changechildren were the result of self-modification is ludicrous. Consider the amount of power and the kind of control that is required to create those kind of changes. Basically, the self-modification hypothesis makes the claim that all Changechildren are powerful, subtle mages, like Mornelithe. Not likely. Basically, the self-modification hypothesis makes the claim >that all Changechildren are powerful, subtle mages, like Mornelithe. Not >likely. But if I recall correctly (IIRC??) we only really met changechildren in the Winds trilogy, and all, apart from Nyara, were tricksy things (some of who were mages - Elspeth and Darkwind battled one with Gwenna helping, and had a battle on their hands) but all apparently out to kill Hawkbrothers (Darkwind's brother had that 'chat' with Skif in Winds II). There doesn't appear to be a changechild society - possibly different modifications don't mix (can't mix?). Thus, like it or no, after a few deaths or maimings, with each generation handing down their problems/responses to the next, over generations, changechildren will equate to 'problem - use all possible force'. I'm not condoning it - the Hawkbrothers lived on the edge at all times, they didn't have the time or safety margin to become considerate, caring, tolerant people - they deliberatly lived in lands where old magic had warped the natural balance - maybe ML is saying that changechildren are _generally_ the result of this warping. I dunno, but it seems to me that the Hawkbrothers lived in a semi-seige state, and in those situations, you tend to shoot first then ask your questions (as Darkwind was criticised (how the devil do you spell that - that's my fifth attempt!) for _not_ doing).
