I have to admit that I didn't really like Kris. But that was more a personality thing, and I think that Misty intended it. He just was not the sort of person that I like. Too self-assured. I mean, he was a fairly nice person when he thought to be, but he could also be rather callous and blind to what he was doing to others. And when he wasn't thinking, that sort of not-quite spoiled air of breeding. Anyway, I think that Kris was actually one of Misty's best characters. I didn't like him, but that was due to his personality, not because of his characterization. That is the test of really brilliant writing: can the reader react to the character as if they were a real person? Caryo?... gets mentioned at least on the occasion when Selenay says that Elspeth stops wanting to go for rides with her as part of the Brat behavior in AotQ. The evidence we have is that the Monarch's Companion is just an ordinary Companion, and presumably dies when the Monarch dies. Certainly in Vanyel's time the succession went to someone unexpectedly, and again, in Talia's time, the Heralds of noble blood were being considered as heirs if Elspeth didn't get Chosen. Oh, dear. How to explain. The Cat People have been around forever; they fight for truth, justice, and the rights of cats everywhere. :-) Then there're Gyrfalcon's Men in White. They have this nasty little habit of making unprovoked attacks on innocent (relatively speaking) list members, especially poor, beleaguered Mat Timmerman. The Ladies in Green formed to protect the world from the ravages of TMIW. The Ones in Black originally formed (I think) to help out TMIW, to prevent the rest of us from ganging up on them. They later learned the error of their ways, and turned to the light side of the Force.....oops! Wrong war. Turned away from evil and joined those of us who champion goodness. And there you have it, clear as mud. We are currently involved in a magewar, which we have taken off-list, in deference to our ever-loving listmistress :-) and the Evil Lawyers of Doom. :-( If you wish to join any of the groups, contact Jaguar (Cat People), Dalisar or Lord Jason (OIB), or me (TLIG). If you really want, you can contact Gyrfalcon (TMIW), but I wouldn't recommend it. :-) I believe that all groups welcome new members. Ah, the honest fathead. I have always thought that Lores is the best example of what I think of as a "Herald by indoctrination" rather than a "Herald by nature". He had a gift of Fetching, and he was reasonably honest and good natured at the mature age of thirteen, and the war with Karse was using up Heralds left and right, so he got Chosen. And his mentor trained him to do things in a Heraldly way, and because he was basically a loyal person, he did his level best. Intelligence not necessarily entering into the equation. Quite possibly it is because of situations like Lores' failure to learn the Truth Spell that made the Heralds switch over from a mentor-student system to a teacher-classroom-yearmates system at the Collegium. Anyway, I can see why Vanyel chose him to work with Tashir. I suspect that once you have gotten him to agree on a position, he's impossible to divert -- which means that with Tashir's innocence established, Lores will think him innocent of everything. He can teach Fetching. (Vanyel is immersed in the mentor system and would think in terms of a teacher with the same Gift.) And he knows the people in Highjorune. A little political savvy never hurts. Incidentally, I think that, to magesight, the air of the Companions Field must be constantly swarming with vrondi, don't you? Yoicks! and Away! Yes, this is something relatively new, and I still have the message that started it all...well, the Mage-war thing, anyway. The groups were started by Gyrfalcon's Men In White (insert usual I-don't-believe-you-Gyrfalcon comment here). But Shadow-Lover started the mage-duels and projectile war, with Gyrfalcon close behind. Once again, the summary of the Cat People. The Cat People (yes, I figured this out, and in the middle of a 4 hour play rehearsal! Aren't you proud of me :) are here to represent the intrests of non-humans, as opposed to the Men In White. We also do Just Causes if there seems to be an overwhelming need for it (but we don't believe in Bardic immunity for any would-be Leslacs!). We are currently allied with the Ladies in Green, and it would seem will be so for a good while (hopefully).
