No, I think it's that it seemed to me he was self-assured about the wrong sorts of things. Also, though he and Dirk were best friends, there always seemed to be a competition between the two (on purpose, I know), and he just plain didn't have the depths Dirk did. I guess it's also that Dirk has always reminded me of my favorite person in the world, and so almost anybody compared with him is No Good, by definition. Well, since my mother is known as the Help Queen and she has a friend who is *also* known as the Queen of Everything, I have sort of decided that being a queen is not an exclusive condition. Despite what some of my friends think, *I* think that there is room for more than one Queen of Everything (or Queen of the Universe, or whatever). I say that the more fabulous people that there are in the world, the better. Oh, and my condolences to Sandy and all the others who have recently lost grand-parents. Speaking as someone who has lost four of my five grand-parents, I empathize deeply. I don't know if this will help anyone here, but one thing that got me through the losses and kept me stable and emotionally tranquil was the thought that death is just another part of life. It is the gate through which the spirit passes to be freed from the suffering of the world, when that suffering is to much to bear. Having seen my grandparents as their lives were diminished in scope and pleasure by the increasing depredations of old age and the world, I am profoundly grateful to whatever power had the compassion to provide them with a place of refuge. I only have to think of the myth of Tithonius (sp?) and I know that mortality is blessing. Ken ObMisty: I just thought that I would throw this out and see what others think, but I have to say that one of my fave Misty characters right now (and this is only based on the first novel in the Mage Storms series) is Charliss. He is great! He is, in fact, everything that make Misty great: a real human character, complex, fascinating, and very compelling. I would love to have her write a novel or novels about his life. When we were talking about threesomes, I believe it was meant more of a love triangle situation, like in the Arrows books: Dirk and Kris are friends, in comes Talia who becomes Kris's lover but is in love with Dirk, Dirk gets jealous, Kris buys it. -+AT+->--- Stormcloud In the name One in Black of the Moon Jenna, the Misty maniac I'll punish you! jwil3969-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 1996 13:53:22 -0800 (PST) From: McCaffrey's White X-Dragon To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Random Message-ID: On Mon, 4 Mar 1996, Chelsea Amberle Fischer wrote: > > Cindy wrote: > > Here's another question to toss into the fray. Kethry needed help defending herself physically through her travels; Kero needed the 'total package deal' in that she had no skill in either fighting or magic and she intended to do something which would otherwise have been suicide; later, after Tarma's training, she didn't need help fighting, but she still needed protection from magic and healing for the wounds which are a part of a mercinary's life. Need had begun to awaken in Kero's possesion (threatening to drop someone down the nearest well tends to have that effect) and, of course, finally wakened fully in Elspeth's possesion. The point of that last sentance is that, when Need was 'asleep', she didn't really conciously make decisions as to what she did. It was more an instinctive response, probably brought about by the purpose of her creation. If ANY woman, even an enemy, needed help, the bearer would be forced to provide it. Similarly, Need wouldn't strike at women as it was her basic purpose to help women, and, as she was sleeping, the exact situation (such as a woman trying to kill the bearer or a friend) didn't figure into Need's reactions. Thus, if it looked like her bearer would need help fighting, she would take over her body without asking or warning. Protection from magic and healing, though not as annoying for the bearer, was still given unbidden. Another of these instinctual acts, therefore, would be her choosing of a new bearer. Being unable to conciously choose her bearer, Need would choose any woman who had need of her. After she wakes up, she can conciously choose her bearer and makes Nyara take her even though Elspeth didn't offer to pass her on and Nyara didn't conciously want her. Anyway, my point is that I don't believe Need chose Elspeth to get to Nyara, she wasn't concious enough to make that sort of decision even if she could sense Nyara's need so far away. As to Misty having Need choose Elspeth as a way to get her to Nyara, I believe it is one of the reasons. I think it was also to shed some light on Need's background and why she does what she does, among other things. ___________________ -==UDIC==- ________________ |\__________________\McCaffrey's White (X)Dragon|\________________\ ||Why is he talking ||| | || to that | || Don't ask. | || White Coconut? | Jake Gipple \|________________| \|__________________| (360)-887-4779 LEMUR! Wings are often a symbol of freedom, and when Lord Valdemar first encountered the Companions, they were, in a sense, a way to freedom for the people who came with him-- they allowed him to rule well and protect them from the tyranny they had fled from. Where have you seen all those pictures where they have wings? P.S. Anybody a fan of Griffin, you know that character that has the firestarting ability. He was my favorite minor character in the Heralds of Valdemar series. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Mar 1996 17:35:43 EST From: "Stormcloud" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Hunky immortals Message-ID: <63A0654AEA-+AT+-SIMCL.STJOHNS.EDU> > concerning the show Forever Knight, Nicholas Knight is one > hunk-a-licious vampire.
