If Valdemar's coat of arms is a Pegasus, that would be the first reference to a mythological creature (mythological in "real world", yeah right) that is referred to in the Valdemar series and isn't actually alive somewhere (e.g. the gryphons). Would that mean there are Pegasi somewhere around? So...which came first, the coat of arms or the Companions? If the Companions came first, then the coat of arms *has* to be designed around them. But if the coat of arms came first...? Oh, okay, but it doesn't ever mention Caryo being Grove Born. I know they're talking about the Monarch's companion. but I was saying that the Monarch's companion isn't grove born. Elspeth's is the only one in recent history that we know of . Until Gwena, Rolan is the only Grove Born Companion known to be in current existence. True, we simply may not know about them, but I rather thought that Gwena's being grove-born had something to do with Elspeth's being the first Herald-Mage in eons. -Free Bard Oriole ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "You're SO nice! Hmmm. Good question. I think the difference is in intent. Lores is -- by his own lights -- acting like a Herald, i.e. trying to defend the people of Highjorune from a murderer and a demon. His motivations are pure, it's just his reasoning that's rotten. Tylendel was out to commit mayhem, pure and simple. He was crackers, yes, but when he planned to summon wyrsa, he planned to kill a lot of people without any regard to whether or not they bore guilt in his brother's death. And it was his intent, and his disregard for consequences, which got him repudiated. I think Lores' Companion wasn't so much obeying him when she kept out of the way -- I think she was already hugely conflicted, and couldn't think of a way to communicate with him. The implication here is that Lores' Companion was not very experienced. Yfandes knew how to make Stefan hear her. Yoicks! and Away! That is the test of really brilliant writing: can the > reader react to the character as if they were a real person? > Well, I guess I'll just have to wade right in and say that I infact did like Kris!! No, I didn't like the way his relationship with Talia and Dirk went, but hey, he was only human. Why then, did I like him? Because for all of his greatly vaulted physical charms, his real dreams didn't involve using them to get something. He loved books, and libraries and would have liked to have replaced herald??? Kyril??? (can't remember who it was, me-+AT+-school, books-+AT+-home) when he retired/died. Yeah, he was self-assured, but like a lot of such people, that only applied to superficial things like manners, and family and honour. (only slightly sarcatistic tone in all that) He was quite shy about sharing his dreams with anyone since he was afraid of being laughed at or snubbed. I guess it just struck a chord with me, tho the Havens know, I don't have his problems!!! Gotta go; that school thing is getting in my way again. Hope I can post more regularily after too many weeks of essays, exams, presentations and late night lattes... I think they are the product of a confusion about the Valdemaran flag. The blazon is (very liberally) a white, winged horse shattering a chain beneath its hooves, on a blue field. Hmmm. I think that I should draw up a correct blazon for an achievement of arms for Valdemar. The lack of such is simply tragic. Just goes to show what happens when Heralds stop doing their job and start riding about saving people and administering justice. =) Ken, who has studied heraldry for quite some time. OK, has anyone here read "Those Who Hunt the Night" by Barbara Hambly? Don Simon Isidro is truly wonderful. And lest we forget her other truly magnificent immortal "hunk": Morkaleb the Black, the dragon in "DragonsBane." The original post was talking about the Monarch's Companion, _not_ the Monarch's *Own*'s Companion. Caryo, not Rolan. The Monarch's C is not the same as the Monarch's Own's C. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remember ever reading that Companions couldn't disobey their Heralds. Granted, they're not going to overrule their Chosen very often (they have to have free will/choice, after all), but never? I know Elspeth ordered Gwena to stop concealing things from her, and although Gwena agreed, she kept doing it anyway. Yes, that was part of the Companion's Master Plan, but she still disobeyed her Chosen. > Which raises an interesting question - if Lores did order to stay > out of it, AND that was the reason she didn't interfer, that has some > serious implications about the Herald-Companion relationship. > Was what Lores did on the same scale as what Tylendel did? > Because Lendel was repudiated for his actions. I would have thought > anything that would put a Companion into catatonic shock would also > be serious enough to be grounds for repudiation! I can't see Lores being repudiated for making a simple error in judgement. Tylendel was repudiated for seeking vengeance and using his Mage Gift to cause harm, resulting in death(s?). He knew what he was doing was wrong, and against the Herald's Oath. Lores truly, in his heart of hearts, thought that Tashir's Companion was a demon, and thought he was acting for 'good'. Okay, he was a fathead, and he was wrong. I don't think that's cause enough to repudiate him. Just MHO!!
