Since you didn't say that it had to be in a particular series, these are the people I would want to meet: 1. Vanyel...though he probably wouldn't ever talk to me because: a. He's shay'a'chern. And I'm female. b. He's always busy with Herald stuff. c. He doesn't really talk to someone who isn't a close friend because he built all those walls up around himself. 2. Savil. She's really interesting and reminds me a bit of my own grandmother..hard-headed but sweet. 3. Elspeth. (Ducking head and running for cover) I've always identified the most with her. She's not perfect. She's a little bit stuck up and spoiled, and most of all she's considered a b**** by a lot of people. Why do I identify with that? People have a generalization that hard-headed women who have a strong will are b****'s. And I've been called one more than once by a guy who thought I was "stepping out of line". > To live in - LHM. It may in fact have been a US import, I just meant that it was on the shelves.. :) Sorry I can't be more specific but I spent half a week going through London bookstores and they tend to blur together. (It was on Oxford St, that much I remember). On the same copyright note, a few folks have mentioned the fact that particular things -are- out of print etc.. While I'm not pompous enough (Shaddup Seanna *grin*) to comment yay or nay on the moral aspect, legally it makes no difference whatsoever whether the thing is in print or not. (And considered from the point of view of an author perhaps hoping to get future royalties from a reprint, it shouldn't make any difference either.) ObMisty: Someone said they didn't like the way SR dealt with Firesong - while I agree 'cos I quite liked Firesong, I do admire Misty for daring to have major characters fall from grace in that type of way especially given that it was at least partly his fault (ie there wasn't a deus ex machina resolution - "Oh, it was the mage-storms, we've fixed 'em F's going to be fine now.."). I finally thought of a counter just now too, to the question posed ages ago about why Talia, or one of the other empathic (in the normal sense) type character didn't pick up on what was going on. Firesong's an adept, with top-notch adept class shields and prides himself on his control over his behaviour - even if he was tearing up inside, his shields will stop Talia sensing it, and until his control broke to the extent that his behaviour changed outwardly, no one would notice.. (Look! An ObMisty and also at least somewhat on topic - F was definitely a hunk and was trying to become immortal - how's that for rationalization?) *grin* Cheers, Kerry. I want to see the stories as much as anyone (I haven't even seen most of them), but just as I won't play on a Misty-related mud, so I wouldn't read them. The fundamental point about copyright is that it is not intended to make sure we get to read whatever we want to read (at least, not directly) - it's to protect authors and people who spend their time and often make their livelihood from being creative. Now if we infringe on those rights, then indirectly we stop them from reaping the rewards of their toil and in some cases, that means that they won't continue to toil and we won't see future books. And looked at from the view of enlightened self-interest, that'd be a bad thing. :) And for what it's worth, it's definitely not legal in Australia, England or the US; and almost certainly not in most 1st world countries (because of the international copyright accords). [Brigit quoted this chap] > From: James BRYANT > > I feel there is no moral objection to copying a work that is unavailable > from its publisher. > In fact I think that some future copyright convention should make this a > right. It would be nice to send the AUTHOR (not the publisher who has > chosen to make it unavailable) a payment or gift but I don't for fear of > possible legal consequences. Reading a work is not a right. What this chap proposes in analogous to stealing a manuscript from some author's drawer because that author decides not to, or hasn't published it.. *sarcasm mode on* And after all, why not - it's his right to read it after all and the author's fault for not publishing it.. (or not being able to find a publisher, or waiting to publish an anthology or ... you get the picture). *mode off* You wouldn't steal a painting from someone's home, don't steal an author's livelihood. > Instead I pass on a favour to some deserving cause. Bully for him. That's a big help to the author.. This is where I'd normally back-peddle and qualify etc and mention exceptions like libraries and the like. Today, I won't - libraries are a special case and I'll continue the discussion in private email if anyone wants to, or on the list if there's interest. Very tough question. I'd have to also start with Savil -- I _like_ her/identify with her and generally think she'd be a neat person to have around. As nifty a person as Vanyel is in the books, he wouldn't make the cut, I'm afraid -- I couldn't take the moodiness & depression. Skif (from Arrows, not MW) would be on the list too -- granted, the pranks etc might start to get on my nerves after a while, but they're never malicious, and Skif is a very nice person down inside (duh -- he _is_ a Herald, after all). I like people who are interesting/ amusing/unpredictable -- makes life more fun -- just as long as they are also folks you can trust. Third, but by no means last, would be Kerowyn. (Ok, so I really like sarcastic people. So sue me.) She's had a fascinating life, is good company and a trustworthy friend, and will always be honest. (It's always nice to have a friend around where, if you ask, "Does this (blank) make me look (blank)?" you know you'll get an honest answer.) So, those are my three. Anybody else? When people ask, you say, "Our little friends the hertasi will do it for us." 22) You establish a Vale in your back yard, fill it with tropical plants then wonder why they're all dead by mid-December. 23) There's a huge platform in yor back yard, and there's always a dead antelope on it. Takes guts. Why? Because she's an aggressive female? I like her best out of all the (Velgarath series) main women... Elspeth is bratty, Tarma is SwordSworn, Savil was old, Talia was... well, Talia (and I didn't like her picture)... Nyara was a cat.... (I know I'm forgetting some but since they don't come to mind, they must have not been too alluring anyway). She's KEROWYN. Seems like the kind of person who goes right after what she wants. Mmmmmmmmm. Outside of Velgarath, I'd have to say two words. DI TREGARDE !!!!! <- 5! (sorry again) Zha'hai'allav'a! ======================== Rynath (OIB) / Jake ===================== "How could it?" Being a SSG (that's Single Straight Guy) I just don't know *what* it is about the Pittster that makes many women's legs turn to pudding and causes them to pant uncontrollably. He wasn't *that* great in Interview... although he *was* better than the back cover picture on the first paperback edition of Interview. Even thinking about that cover gives me bad dreams. ObMisty: There seems to be no vampires in Valdemar, so Brad Pitt won't play one of those. I always figured movie casting this way: Imagine it's finally here--someone submitted a screenplay for the LHM books. Studio executives cast a big action hero as Vanyel. I mean, like Jean Claude Van Damme. Play along with me before you flame. This way, all the people who like action films will go see it because it has Van Damme, and all the Misty/Fantasy fans will see it just to see how *bad* it is. :) Now, you may not like it, but it works! And the pressing question out of all of this is... WHO WOULD PLAY KEROWYN? Zha'hai'allav'a! ======================== Rynath (OIB) / Jake ===================== "How could it?" Tom asked. In all the books she writes, you can always read them many times without becoming bored. I think I read all of them at least once a every couple of months. Since being on this list, even more because I'm always looking stuff up for reference. I really do use Misty books more than my school books, guess it shows where my priorities lie! That was about it though, I really liked Griffin as well, I wish he would have been more of a min character. He had such potential to be, because it was an abnornal gift. Hmmmmm, well, what if I promised to study it *real* hard, and do my English report on it. That would be considered study purposes, and we're even doing a short story unit in English right now! And well, if I just *happen* to be desperately drooling for a copy, that's just coincidence! Lady Becky The more that you read, the more things you will know.
