Personally, from reading that passage, that always struck me as a bit of a sop/comfort to the heralds who were facing mages.. Yes, a Journeyman mage won't be able to work through their shields, but I can't see a high Master or an Adept having trouble. Consider also that mind-magic shields (ie shields formed by mind-gifted people, like thought-sensors) don't stop magic, but they can & do stop mage-magic from affecting their minds (cf: Talia taunting Hulda to read her mind in AFall). I'd say that keeping mind-magic out requires -different- shielding from keeping mage-magic out. As such, your less sophisticated mages will only be able to keep mind-magic out by raising their mage-magic shielding to a level such that it inadvertantly spills over into shielding mind-magic. More sophisticated mages (or those with experience in mind-magic) should be able to be completely shielded against mind-magic and completely unshielded against mage-magic if they chose (lord knows why they would, it's just a theoretical example). I'd expect that type of sophistication from Herald or Tayledras or White-Winds Masters / Adepts. However the Heralds were mainly facing blood-mages, many of whom had power, but not the level of sophistication, or the mind-magic gifts that would let them create mind-magic-specific shields.. and so the advice was reasonable (if not absolutely complete). > Question: Why would firesong bother to keep such high shields in > relatively neutral territory? Check out LHM - mages keep shields up at all times, they're practically part of them. If they drop them, they do so only in shielded areas. And that makes sense too - there's lots of nasty things out there that might pounce on a unprotected mage, who's glowing with power.. Snack time. > furthermore, doesn't such a high level of shielding require concentration? If we're talking about the non-sophisticated mages, yes. If we're talking about adept or Master class sophisticated mages, then no, that level of shielding is automatic.. or at least not at a conscious level. > So wouldn't his shields lower a trifle while he was sleeping? No.. this would be a major vulnerability in any mage's defence and I'd be sure that they'd ensure that their shields stayed up.. Comments from others? (Oh, and I think Rozanna sent this to me alone, but her intent was definitely to send it to the list, can anyone else confirm seeing the original?) Cheers, Kerry. It's just extremely rare and we've yet to see it in a character in the time periods we've been privy to. (Ref: Savil, to Vanyel after he says "I thought she [Yfandes] would find someone else after I'd gone." - paraphrased, "Do you want her to die? She may have been talking about the grove-born surviving, but it didn't read that way; and there are other similar references as well. Sheesh!! <-- 2 (I'm only semi-deranged). > AAR, person I'd want to meet/live with most: Vanyel!!!!! (<---look 5!) > (big surprise.) I have a penchant for hero-worship; and anyway he's just > so cool! I like Vanyel a lot, but Tylendel is a very very close second.. (which isn't bad considering their respective screen-times). I just like his attitude.. (well, before his twin got killed anyway). > Savil and Kerowyn are some of my role models, so I'd very much like to > meet them. *grin* Granny Weatherwax is probably the character who's had the worst impression on my outlook on life. :) (Oops, this is the Misty list?) > I didn't like Kethry all that much, she's too "feminine" for my romantic > tastes ;) Oh no.. She only -looks- feminine.. One of my favourite scenes from Oath* is where Kethry's locked in the dungeon below and the captor mage and her ex-husband are trembling a couple of levels above, to the tune of the foundations rocking and dust and plaster falling from the ceiling with a background beat of boom boom BOOM boom.. "She's going to get out.. She's going to get out.. Ohmigod she's going to get out.." Diana Tregarde takes the cake for my favourite female character though.. *grin* When it comes right down to it, there's a whole swathe of Misty characters that I wouldn't kick up about meeting and knowing. ;) Cheers, Kerry. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Mar 96 11:23:32 EST From: mealink-+AT+-syd.au.swissbank.com (Kerry Mealing) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Companions + nodes Message-ID: <9603080123.AA02863-+AT+-syd.au.swissbank.com> Pat Tamarin wrote: > If Companions are white and blue-eyed, for the same reason that Mages and > the Bond birds the of mages are white and blue-eyed: their use of node > energies, why DIDN'T the area around Haven have constantly drained nodes? > Between the Companions and the mages in training, where was all the energy > coming from? > True, Vanyel built a Heartstone for Haven, but before then? Easy.. :) Firstly, there was a very strong node there even before Vanyel built the Heartstone (no, that's not a coincidence, Baron Valdemar was an Adept remember).. Secondly, the Companions aren't always tapping into nodes, only when they need enhanced speed, endurance, whatever, so it's really only when they're coming and going that they do so.. Plus I don't think that the Companion's use of node-power would be really that noticeably great (all right, maybe if the entire group decided to have races, then perhaps it would be noticeable, but not a drain). :) Also, the Companions can probably tap ley lines (are they called ley?) as well as nodes, or maybe even just earth-energy (such as that possessed by a forest) before it even gets to ley lines. Personally I think Haven will tend to have lots of ley lines and lesser nodes around it, simply because of Baron Valdemar choosing / arranging such a site and also because of the umpteen generations of Herald-mages / Companions using the area (even if they can't tap lines etc, the use of magic still promotes the formation of lines).. I didn't read Rediscovery, but I *did* read IIPTNIG. I didn't think that that book was a total failure, although it was different. I haven't been disappointed with any of Misty's books yet, except White Gryphon. I've a lot of her collaborations (Bard's Tale/Bardic Voices/Bedlam Bards/SERRAted Edge) and I thought they were all good. Chrome Circle was great, for instance! It's hard to tell with collaborations. Some authors alternate chapters, others simply work together, and in one case the first half of the book was written by one author and the second half by another!! It's a luck of the draw, but Misty's been lucky as I like all her books, even the bad ones... Zha'hai'allav'a! ======================== Rynath (OIB) / Jake ===================== "How could it?" You get my 2 of my favorite SFF authors together and WOW! I had to chuckle over the Piers Anthony collaboration. I personally though it was a piece of garbage. Then again, all of Piers's later works are pfft! The Xanth series, which in the beginning I adored, has now turned into a :write basic plot, change nouns and voila new story". Another collaborator is Josepha Sherman. Her books are fantastic, and have an authentic feel to them that shows she did her reserach well. Finally I would be remiss if I didnt mention Holly Lisle.
