Plus, they were living in highly uncertain times, and she probably had to know just in case anything happened to Selenay. As for the arrow code, according to AFall (me-+AT+-school, books-+AT+-school!), the people there when Rolan arrived were Selenay, Elspeth, Kyril, Dirk, Jeri, Teren, Keren, and Skif. All Heralds, so no harm. Besides, at that point, if anyone else had been there when Kyril unwrapped the arrows and had seen a)the arrows and b) everyone's (particularly Dirk's) reactions, the code would have been broken anyhow, but it wasn't 'casue everyone there already knew what it meant. I'm slightly confused about what our attitude is supposed to be to the original Son of the Sun. IIRC in Vanyel's time the original S of S instituted a some kind of coup, got the royal family on side and started torching any one he felt like. However in the storms books Solaris seems to be claiming that she is reinstituting the original Son's creeds and that the original Son was pretty liberal as Karsites go. Eh? On the other hand, "Stranger at the Wedding" was very good. And quite frankly "Dragonsbane" was one of the best novels ever written. Haunting, beautiful, by turns rough-hewn and poisonously decadent with a thread of darkness and horror running through it. Like her dragons, Hambly's writing is brilliantly beautiful and inhumanly deadly. The only stuff by Cherryh that I really liked was her books, "The Gate of Ivrel" and "The Well of Shiuan." The whole characterisation of Morgaine and Vanye in those books was incredibly powerful. Also the idea of the dying world in "The Gate of Ivrel" (I think that that is the right book?) was incredible. Hmmm. That reminds me. Another writer that I adore: Ardath Mayhar. I have a couple of Kyrannon books. For those of you who are interested, "How the Gods Wove in Kyrannon" is incredible. Even in the most techno city. Look at the patterns of the world and the patterns that we make in it and you will see a wonderful magic, sometimes bright and glorious, sometimes dark and frightening, but always there. When you think about it, some of our cities are not that different from the Pelagirs, full of dark and twisted magic. And fortunately, we do have our own Hawkbrothers who try to right the balance. For the moment, I suggest going out and looking at the flowerbeds (which in N. Dela. are still mostly dormant) and looking at the beginnings of the daffodils and crocus. Look at the giant sleeping trees, just starting to waken for the coming of Spring. Listen to the call of the birds and the voices of the wind. There is a world of magic, if you only have the way of looking at it. May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences. Yeah there are *lots* of differences (like a monarchy for a > start) but I think the basic frameworks there. Hmmm. All I have to say is that if you think that the early history of the US was anything like this, you need to go back and re-read your history. The early colonists had zero tolerance for religious difference (with a few exceptions like Penna. and RI.) or different lifestyles. Much as I hate to say it, the conservatives in the US are quite right. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights was never intended to have the interpretations that they currently do. However, I think we can all count ourselves fortunate that it never occured to George, Tom, and Ben and their cronies that people might someday think that "human" could possibly refer to women, blacks, Native Americans, Jews, homeless people and other such groups. Thanks to their blindness in that regard, we have a document that guarantees human rights, not the rights of landed white men, which is what they meant. However, I think an argument could be made that Misty based Valdemar on an ideal of what a country should be. And I don't think that it is to outrageous to say that her ideal was rooted in some vision of what the US might have been if its citizens had been as good as the principles that they framed in the Constitution. And who knows, given how far we have already come, I still hold on to the hope that we will someday get there and be worthy of those principles.
