It may be .along the same lines as a Lifebond, where you see the person and it just .hits you. Maybe the Companions do that, but have the added advantage of a .little mental nudge that tells them where to go. Hmmmmm. Yes!! I am not sure about the magical background/nature of Companions (whenever I think I'm sure, Misty goes and writes something like the _Winds_ trilogy) but they must know who their Chosen is (and where she is, by default). This would also account for why Companions don't ride into places like Iftel (*sigh*) to get their Chosen. The Chosen often come to them, somehow (for example, Skiffy). Maybe Companions, on further thought, DO know what's going to happen in the world, and they're there to help! I mean, Companions have been kind of shut-mouthed about their capabilities (shut-minded?) before now. They could, possibly, have some sort of *precognition* which would let them pick their Chosen or know what's going on in the world. They just keep to themselves about it (I mean, they had their chance already... so they let other people do things.) .Thirty white horses on a red hill, . First they champ, . Referring here to his 'mysterious' behavior in SWarning. The thing is, there isn't really much mystery to cats. Having lived with and loved them all my life, I can say that the only people who find them mysterious haven't been paying attention. I assume they are to busy projecting their romantic notions on what are, after all, some pretty cool little co-sharers of Spaceship Earth (*OH GOD! I have finally read too much PC material! ***HELP MEEEEEE!!!!!***). Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled diatribe. I don't think that the explanation that Altra is "not really a cat" explains it. Of course, he is a cat! That is the point. Otherwise, the dead SofS would just come back as Obi-Wan Kenobi and council people to "Use the Force." Altra is a cat, in the same way that Rolan is an equine. Maybe not a normal one, maybe even a very special kind of one, but nevertheless bound by the nature of the form. Just like Rolan can't open doors (at least not without some structural damage) and has a different attitude that one would expect from a human, so Altra is also constrained by his form. Anyway, those are my thoughts. And now that you have them, what do you intend to do with them? Well, how to explain this. I guess what I mean is that I liked Stefen. He was easily one of Misty's most compelling and fascinating characters. He was one of the few characters in the LHM series that was plausibly strong enough to deal with Van. And then, Misty went and spoiled everything by making him just a reborn Tylendel. All of the sudden, he went from a complex, powerful character to a mere plot device to resurrect a character who didn't deserve it. I mean, let's face it, Tylendel was not worth giving up Stefen for. Why couldn't Ty just stay dead and let Stefen be a real person of his own. And Van and Stef could be in love and follow their destinies. That would have been such a cool message: love can die, but that is not the end and you can find a new love and be happy. But NO!!!! We have to have that old story of "one true love" crammed down our throat. Stef had to be Tylendel reborn, since there is only enough room in a person's heart to love one person, and if Van loved Stef that would mean he didn't love Ty. Gingrich!!! That is such a crock! I can't talk about this anymore. I am so upset that I can barely type, and I am screaming aloud! Suffice to say that I HATE the Tylendel/Stefen plot device. So happy they're back (Muppet Treasure Island is a blast!) But why did they have to put them opposite Due South? AAARRRGGGHHH!!! Frog, mountie, frog, mountie..... re: acronyms. Roger argued that acronyms were not good. Kenny offered the linguistic argument back, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents. On the Internet, acronyms appeared for two reasons. The first was that the government, engineering, techie types who were using the original net were used to acronyms. The second was that acronyms could be passed over slow communication links more efficiently than complete phrases. When I went into the Air National Guard in 1978, I used systems that passed traffic at the blinding speed of 800 baud. (bits per second) And that was an improvement over systems that had passed traffic at 64 baud. (I used those, too, until well into the eighties.) Today, we still have people who are paying for every character they recieve. On that basis, we can look at acronyms as courtesy. A secondary effect of the use of acronyms is the sociological purpose they serve. In simple terms, what they do is divide the newbies from the elders. The jargon of a group is part of what defines it as a separate group, and part of what identifies the members to each other. If you were at a con and saw someone with a button that said: "Heyla!" you could be pretty sure that the person was a Lackey fan. If the same person had a button that said, "One In Black" you could be pretty sure that they were also on this mailing list. And I've caught up.... Wheeeeeeeee!!!!! Yoicks! and Away! I mean, Chaucer is Middle English and he is around 700yo. Old English (Anglo-Saxon) pre-dates that Norman Conquest. That would make it close to 1000 years before present as the ending period of OE. And remember that English is a very unstable language. Other languages do not necessarily change as rapidly. Look at Slavic. In the same period of time as from Chaucer to present, the Slavic languages have not had nearly the divergence or change. Even French is more conservative. I can read Old French fairly well, but I have to have a translation for real OE. Remote, but not vicious. I agree that Sean Connery is cool, and I think he'd make a wonderfully swell Withen Ashkevron (yes, different time period, I know.) And while Harrison Ford is also cool, I'm afraid he's way the heck too old to play Skif. Samantha Mathis might be able to pull off Elspeth. I'd never really been too impressed with her until I recently saw Broken Arrow, and she's a great action-movie type. She fit my visual of Elspeth, so here's hoping she really can act. (I hated her Amy in Little Women nigh unto murder, but then Amy was my favorite character, so maybe nothing would have lived up to my standards.) Somebody's going to go ballistic here, but I think Sharon Stone is a better actress than people give her credit for, and she has the sheer presence to be a good Kerowyn. If that's too much to stomach, I'd say maybe Renee Russo. And...Uma Thurman for Talia? She's probably too old by now, too, but I'm thinking of the character she played in Dangerous Liaisons. Uma Thurman is one of those actors who look like a completely different person in every single movie, so other people's mental images of her may be vastly different from mine. Off topic, I can't BELIEVE I missed the Muppets Tonight with Michelle Pfeiffer. I have nothing left to live for. Dratted spring break. The Muppets are marvelous, and Michelle is even better. I did see Treasure Island, though, and enjoyed it lots. Wow, Tim Curry was an amazing Long John Silver. He's the ultimate in sympathetic bad guys. Darned if I can think of just the right Misty character to cast him as, however. Will I get flamed if I suggest Tom Cruise as Kris? (Judging from the subject lines, some -- um -- controversy surrounded Brad Pitt.) I really like poor Tom and always have, from Legend on down to Interview. And, please, no one tell me that I only like him because he's good looking. I promise you, that's not the case, although I get that every time from somebody. If I were just casting based on attractiveness, I'd have Julia Roberts playing Kris HTH Jekyll & Hyde ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 1996 01:11:14 -0500 (EST) From: "those little weenies, playing their little weenie games" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Sean Connery? (He come here to give a talk on acting Shakespeare a few months back and did some really incredible excerpts from King John -- he's good at being persuasive & nasty.) Tim Curry... hmmm.... I know there have already been suggestions re this, but why not Mornelithe/Leareth? I think he would be really incredible as one of those incarnations. No one else could possibly be Shalaman, and he couldn't possibly be anyone else. I was thinking of him when I first read the book.
