Sorry to upset you so much! Please, calm down! Just because Stef was revealed to be a reincarnation of Lendel didn't mean that he wasn't Stef anymore. He was still the same compelling, fascinating character that you liked before that revelation. He didn't _remember_ being Lendel, except for the odd thing that came back to him, like calling Van "ashke". He grew up in a different way than Lendel, he had different Gifts than Lendel, and he was just the same soul in a different body. I felt that Stefen *was* a real person of his own, reincarnation of Tylendel or not. Van didn't know until the end. The only people who suspected were Moondance and Starwind, who mentioned it to Savil. (maybe Fandes knew too, I don't know.) You can be lifebonded to someone without loving them; it makes it difficult, but it's not impossible. Van didn't fall in love with him because he was Lendel; he fell in love with him because he was Stefen. They were seperate entities even as they were the same: remember the Dream Van has, where Lendel tells him not to feel guility. This is probably not a logical argument, probably, but I just came from my metaphysics class, so do forgive me. -+AT+->--- Stormcloud In the name One in Black of the Moon Jenna, the Misty maniac I'll punish you! jwil3969-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 1996 09:01:17 -0800 (PST) From: Priest To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Ehhh...ahh....may I join? Remember, the book never came right out and said anyone was attracted to anyone else; you just picked it up. Likewise with the movie. Come on, anyone with a little sophistication could see the sexual tension in that final scene with Louis and Armand. And people who don't want to see it didn't really have to. I thought it was nicely done...in fact, I liked the movie a heck of a lot better than I liked the book, but that's another conversation. The worst offender ever in the Just Good Friends department was, sad to say, a Misty book. Remember Knight of Ghosts and Shadows? Where Eric and Kory were in love and attracted to each other? Okay, then did you read Summoned to Tourney? Where they loved and were attracted to Beth, and they were like family but they never talked about it and never touched and every I love you had to be a joint one, as in "I love you, Beth and Kory," or "I love you, Beth and Eric." I was sickened by the whole thing. Dammit, they wanted each other in the first book, and the second one was a complete cop-out. I blame Baen; most of their books have disgustingly family-values endings, regardless of how implausible or unrealistic they might be. Witness Elvendude and Born to Run. I agree with you that Stef was a much better character than Tylendal, but here's how I look at it instead of as a pure plot device. Tylendel died very young; he was never able to mature into the man he was supposed to be. Reincarnation was a second chance, a) to make something of his life and live it more fully and b) for Vanyel to have a chance at the supportive love he was denied through no fault of his own. Like any creation, the second draft was better -- more complete. Lendel was refined and strengthened by his experiences in his previous life, and that changed his character, deepened it. I don't think it was done to show that you can only have One True Love. After all, there is no One True Way , and I think that should go for the human heart as well. I think it was a pretty unconventional type of character development, intended to produce a lover for Vanyel who had the inner resources and the dedication to hold his own in a pretty demanding relationship. You may still hate it, but I hope this gives you some options to ponder, at any rate. Thought you'd heard, but I guess not, so I get to be the bearer of tidings. There will be an anthology, not of Misty's work, but at least of short stories about Velgarth. It'll be called *Friends of Valdemar*, and I dunno when it'll be out. The only contribution I'm sure of will be a story by Mark Shepherd about the affair between Vanyel and Jonne, the guardsman who was mentioned in MPromise. Mark was very excited about it and says it's going to be quite sexy. Personally, I'm thrilled. Now comes the part where we wait.... (Back in EQ's black-and-white days, someone asked Wendy & Richard Pini if there were ever going to be black elves. "Wait till you see the color version," they grinned. Leetah is the major female lead, and her lifemating to the white Cutter was one of the reasons that a Saturday-morning cartoon project fell through. ABC wasn't sure Saturdays were ready for an "interracial" couple, and the Pinis weren't about to make the Sunfolk white.) Other than that, nothing but a handful of short stories comes to mind. Octavia Butler has written a number of books with black characters. Nancy Farmer's _The Ear, the Eye and the Arm_ is set in Africa. Misty's story "Operation Desert Fox" in _Bolos: Honor of the Regiment_ has a Liberian protagonist. Children's authors are particularly good at including a variety of ethnicities. See Diane Duane's Wizard books, Laurence Yep's Dragon books, Monica Hughes more recent works. Even A Wizard of Earthsea has a hero who isn't "white". I was really pleased to see a lot of racial variety in Misty's books. Yoicks and Away! And, 'cuz I read LHM before Arrows, I would have thought that Vanyel *was* doing something at least ... questionable ... if he had another lifebonded, even though he'd already had Lendel, but that's just me. _____________________________________________________________________________ L'enfant terrible ayork-+AT+-simons-rock.edu Grand Destinies lead to Grand Funerals. -Mercedes Lackey ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Mar 1996 17:25:27 CST From: Heather Watson To: Subject: misogynistic dinosaurs Message-ID: <12MAR96.18818224.0038.MUSIC-+AT+-NEMOMUS> No, I would not agree that it's irrelevant that James Bond is a misogynistic dinosaur, because he's the character. He's the one we interact with when we pay five fifty to see a James Bond movie. We're in Bond's world, and I don't like Bond's world. I think it's crass and tacky, though occasionally amusing (the scene in GoldenEye with the scientist's workshop was hilarious.) What is irrelevant, IMO, is Sean Connery's misogyny. When I go see, oh, let's say Highlander, I'm in no way relating to Sean, nor do I have any contact with his worldview. I can disapprove of him as a person, but I don't see why that should affect how I feel about his character, or the story he is playing out for my viewing pleasure. I can enjoy Name of the Rose without liking Connery as a person, whereas I doubt I would have enjoyed it if I hadn't liked the monk (gak, can't remember his name) as a person, because in the context of fiction, it's the creation and not the medium or the creator that counts. Now, I dunno what the point of any of this was. Just a little game of pick-up litcrit. I'll stop now, before I start to ramble even more interminably than usual. Yep, I love Barnes & Noble, one of the few places in Fresno that .is worth anything (even if the parking is beyond horendous) but if it was .out of print, then ordering it wouldn't do any good would it? Or can you .order put of print things? At B. Dalton, at least, you can order out of print books *if* they have them in their main warehouse (which, to my understanding, is absolutely ginormous). I've special ordered books from B. Dalton before, and they usually have everything I'm looking for. Now that I think about it, I should ask them if they have a copy... Do a web search of "Mercedes Lackey" .and it'll show up about a million times. :) I hate it when that happens. I was looking for Ian's page and I got around 30 hits on the Firebird pages. The stallion (16ish inches tall) is around 60 bucks, the mare (14ish inches tall) is around 50 bucks, and the foal (I can't remember how big) is around 40 bucks, IIRC. Only the stallion and the mare come with tack and saddle, and, since they're handmade, they take like six weeks to prepare (I know, I bought one for someone). But they're worth it and (at least I) think they look really cool. I may buy myself one in a few paychecks or so. (so we'll give the make .up people fits?) Why not? Why can't JEJ play someone evil? James "Anything I Say Sounds Like It Comes Out Of The Mouth Of God" Earl Jones' favorite role (he said this somewhere) was my favorite bad guy, Darth Vader. (Welll, he was my favorite evil character until Return of the Jedi when he (gasp) turned to the light. Why couldn't the Empire win? :( ) And Ornthallen seems like a really cool bad guy for him to play. (ASIDE: In New York City, there's a bunch of NYNEX (bleccch) commercials with JEJ holding a huge megaphone, yelling to NYC. I could just hear him say something like, "Attention Citizens of New York City. You have been taken over by the Empire." and then doing Darth Vader sounds in the megaphone. JEJ did say he loves doing Darth Vader (and I know he didn't do the breathing stuff himself. But that's part of the part anyway).) Where *was* I?? Oh. Ornthallen is Kris' uncle. Does that mean we can have a black person play Kris? (I don't mean this in a bad way--it just opens a few more interesting options). I don't think that the .explanation that Altra is "not really a cat" explains it. Of course, he .is a cat! That is the point. Otherwise, the dead SofS would just come .back as Obi-Wan Kenobi and council people to "Use the Force." Altra is a .cat, in the same way that Rolan is an equine. Maybe not a normal one, .maybe even a very special kind of one, but nevertheless bound by the .nature of the form. Just like Rolan can't open doors (at least not .without some structural damage) and has a different attitude that one .would expect from a human, so Altra is also constrained by his form. Rolan was *not* a horse, he was a Companion. Companions are not horses (even though they look like them). I know that's a weak point, but Misty seems to make this distinction throughout her work. ICVR that Companions chose horse-form because it was the best way that they could help the Heralds. They're not special horses, they're not normal horses, they're not any horses at all. They have horse-shape, yes. Firecats seem to be Karse's counterparts to Valdemar's Companions. If that's so, then they're not cats, by the same kind of reasoning... Both Companions and Firecats are constrained by the forms they use, yes. But they're not horses and cats.
