This is a warning. This song may be offensive to friends of lumberjacks. The Lumberjack Song- from Monty Python's Flying Circus Lumberjack: (spoken) I never wanted wanted to be a barber anyway. I wanted to be a lumberjack. Leaping from tree to tree as they float down the mighty rivers of British Columbia! The giant redwood, the larch, the fir, the mighty Scotch pine! The smell of fresh cut timber, the crash of mighty trees! With my best girly by my side, we'd sing, sing, sing... Lumberjack: (singing) I'm a lumberjack, and I'm okay. I sleep all night, I work all day. (Refrain) Mounties: He's a lumberjack and he's okay. He sleeps all night and he works all day. Lumberjack: I cut down trees, I eat my lunch, I go to the lava'try. On Wednesdays I go shopping, and have buttered scones for tea. Mounties: He cuts down trees, he eat his lunch, he goes to the lava'try. On Wednesdays he goes shopping, and has buttered scones for tea. Mounties: Refrain Lumberjack: I cut down trees, I skip and jump, I like to press wildflowers. I put on women's clothing, and hang around in bars! Mounties: He cuts down trees, he skips and jumps, he likes to press wildflowers. He puts on women's clothing, and hangs around in bars? Mounties: refrain Lumberjack: I cut down trees, I wear high heels, suspenders and a bra. I wish I'd been a girly, just like my dear Mama! Mounties: He cuts down trees, he wears high heels, suspenders and a bra... (make disgusted noises and leave) Lumberjack: (continuing song) I wish I'd been a girly, just like my dear Mama! Actually, Talia was briefed the day before she left on her internship (AFTER she'd gotten her Whites and passed from trainee status), and Elcarth (?) had her practicing it in his office and wouldn't let her leave the briefing until she could fletch her pattern with her hands behind her back. One of Kris's jobs was to continue her 'schooling' on the code, including teaching her his. So, IMO, the only reason for Elspeth to 'know the code' was because she was the heir. She wouldn't know it as part of her training at that point. How about room for a little honest disagreement? Again, I know whoever made the comment was kidding, but I found it just a small bit off-putting. Something along the lines of "I never understood the appeal of Actor X. (Homework? Hahahaha! That was a joke, right? With midterm grades like mine, who needs enemies?) Now, I want to know what we're going to do about this Firesong problem. I'm pathetically lonely in real life; I don't want characters to have to stay that way, too. Fine, I've come to accept that it isn't working out with An'desha. Now, it was hard for me at first, but they obviously have separate lives to lead, and -- look, I just don't want to talk about it right now, okay? It's a very emotional thing. Now, I like Silverfox, but there doesn't seem to be a real spark there. Do you think it's the kind of thing where they could learn to love each other, or are we going to have to see a whole new character in the third book? How about Tremane? He's lonely, too. So what if he's straight? Love conquors all, am I right? Hey, neither of them are getting any younger. If it were up to you guys (which it is obviously, not to put too fine a point on it, not), what would you do in Storm Breaking to help out sweet Firesong? And don't say "nothing," because you'll go and make me cry. They aren't always like that. Witness "Five-Twelfths of Heaven" and "Silence in Solitude." The main character in these books is in a threeway marriage of convenience with two men that she had never met previous to contracting the marriage. That doesn't sound like "family values" to me. The only problem with this is that (b) is no reason to bring back 'Lendel. Stefen (as a seperate person) would have fulfilled every requirement of (b). As far as (a) goes, the fact that Tylendel got a "second chance" is inexcusable. The great tragedy of 'Lendel's death was that he was so young and let his grief and rage draw him into madness and evil, and finally into death. But that is what tragedy IS! To bring him back and give him a second chance destroys the tragedy and completely obviates the pathos of his death. Basically, it is like saying that it is okay to be a mass-murderer, as long as you are young. > I don't think it was done to show that you can only have One True > Love. After all, there is no One True Way , and I think that should > go for the human heart as well. I think it was a pretty unconventional I still say that one of the characteristics of Misty's writing is that she perpetuates the myth of "One True Love" in her works. Which is, in one sense, fine. It is, after all, a fantasy story and should be "more than real." On the other hand, this particular myth strikes me as one of the most pernicious and dangerous ones in literature. As a gender studies specialist and critical comparativist, I have to take exception to such a stereotype. Just finished the latest Misty book I could get my hands on - title as above. I may be totally mistaken{hope hope HOPE not :)} but I got the idea from various hints in the book that Misty has written other books in that setting/with those characters...is this so? Can anyone tell me what their titles are if so, & whether they're available in the UK? One troll eagerly anticipating replies... And....Armand was a Greek or Roman child of about 18 when he was given the Dark Gift (guess who's been reading too much Anne Rice?), with wavy/curly reddish hair. His vampire mentor was Marius, an artist of that time. Antonio Banderas is very, very spanish, had long *dark* dark hair, and looked nothing like 18. There is no way he could have ever pulled off a convincing French accent (I've tried!), even if Armand was supposed to be French (Magnus, the one who transformed Lestat, then killed himself, was French...Parisian). Brad Pitt looked nothing like Louis, either. He didn't have the proper New Orleans accent, he didn't have black hair, *or* green (green enough) eyes, and he was too damn big. Louis is supposed to be skin-and-bones. Actually, Tom Cruise, whom everyone thought would be terrible as Lestat, was the best. Along with Kirsten Dunst, but I don't think anyone doubted her. Okay, I'll stop ranting now. :) *****LADY JAGUAR***** Leader of the Cat People Lady in Green LGMCB, DHTBB "Meddle not in the affairs of cats for you are soft-skinned, and blind at night." ********************* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Mar 1996 08:12:56 -0500 (EST) From: Rosario Holsen-Baker To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Edited Out of the Closet Message-ID: On Thu, 14 Mar 1996, Heather Watson wrote: > Actually, I thought Interview with the Vampire did a decent job of > conveying the erotic feel of the book, albeit subtly. There was a lot more of that in _The Vampire Lestat_, between Lestat and Nicolas, before Lestat became a vampire. The family scenes, though...what was it one newspaper called it? Ah yes. Two men and an undead baby. It was rather tacky. I already ranted about the casting choice. :) *****LADY JAGUAR***** Leader of the Cat People Lady in Green LGMCB, DHTBB "Meddle not in the affairs of cats for you are soft-skinned, and blind at night." ********************* ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Mar 1996 08:16:54 -0500 (EST) From: Rosario Holsen-Baker To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Nother Newbie Message-ID: > >On Mon, 11 Mar 1996, Mary Temple wrote: > > > Hermione too. I read it a long time ago (skipped my morning class to read it, too!). It's called _The Abandoned_ by Paul (?) Gallico, and it's about this boy who gets hit on the head and goes into a coma and dreams he's a cat.
