No, but I think the comments about "feminine" and "masculine" women are, shall we say, outdated. By far the majority of women that I know -- and that's gay, straight, and numerous women in the Foggy In-Between realms -- are a good, healthy mix of "feminine" and "masculine" traits. I think the days when any woman with strength was awarded the two-edged praise "she's just like any man" are on their way Out. I defy anyone to place me as "feminine" or "masculine." I'm smart, opinionated, and gravitate toward cold, hard logic -- which makes me a Strong Masculine Woman. I'm also empathetic, non-competitive, and romantic, with a tendancy to cry at movies -- which makes me a Traditional Feminine Woman. Frankly, I'd rather not be either exclusively. Di Tregarde did not strike me as "masculine." She's brave and competent, but I don't think that's a symptom of acting like a man. And I don't think that in New York City, for crying out loud, she'd have any trouble finding female friends to her liking. If I can do it in central Missouri without breaking a sweat, they can't be as rare as all that. Is Kethry masculine or feminine? Is Talia masculine or feminine? I think these labels are of little use in understanding the characters, as the labels are inherently limited and of little use in understanding ANY complex, realistic human being. Oh, and for those of you who were irked by the fact that it seemed like only gay male characters were under scrutiny, that was not my intention. Maybe it's just me, but I looked at the list of Vanyel, Stef, and Firesong, and it didn't occur to me that they were all gay. They're just all notable characters. Not that you're necessarily wrong, but I did hear an interview with him that was very gay-positive, and he kissed Danny Glover in one of the Lethal Weapon movies. Therefore, it would mae sense if both sets of gods refrained from acting in the realm of mortals, since if *they* are free to act capriciously and insure peace and tranquility, would not the evil gods then have a free hand in creating touble? Perhaps what are seeing is a balance of forces, with the good gods only intervening when needed, not hwen wanted, thus helping to prevent the evil gods from acting at whim. Chonni, don't *do* this to me! It was such a great post!!! Amy Tan is a wonderful writer, the author of The Joy Luck Club, which was partially about the experience of being Chinese-American, and partially about the stresses between first-generation immigrant mothers and second-generation Americanized daughters. It's not "women's fiction," it's brilliant fiction on the American experience, which just happens to include women about as often as it does men!!! I've never read The Kitchen God's Wife, but rest assured, it's not cutesy, sentimental fiction about a kitchen. I hate the label "women's (fill-in-the-blank)" for literature, movies, music, whatever, that happens to deal with women. It implies that if only women are involved, or if primarily women are involved, then it can't be of "mainstream" importance, as if only men were of general interest, while women are a kind of perpetual special-interest group. Message-ID: <19MAR96.18977457.0045.MUSIC-+AT+-NEMOMUS> Swordspoint is a perfectly *fabulous* little book that I read over and over and over and over again, and thank you for inviting me to talk about it! Briefly, it's about the political intrigue among the ruling class of an imaginary city, and it has a similar tone to, IMO, Dangerous Liaisons (the movie; never read the book). The two main characters are Richard St. Vier, a professional duelist-for-hire, and his lover Alec, who is brilliant, funny, bitchy, full of secrets, and occasionally suicidal. What I really like about it (well, one thing I really like about it) is that they have this enormously powerful, touching romance, and yet they never talk about it directly. Richard is a man of few words, and Alec is a man of many problems, and used to using words to avoid topics that make him uncomfortable. At first, there's not much to indicate how they feel about one another, except that they share an apartment. But as the story goes on, not only is there this depth of emotion just simmering all around them, but every action each of them takes leads you further and further into realizing how very much in love they are -- more than they really even realize. It just may be my favorite book in the whole, wide world. It's funny, romantic, swashbuckling, and just a little poignant around the edges. The author is Ellen Kushner, and she's a wonderful writer (her other adult book was Thomas the Rhymer). Read it! Read it as soon as you can! I often find that controlled writing .in accents adds to (not detracts from) the atmosphere of the work. Often .I do find it distracting to read a book written with constant accent, but .I think that a talented writer can insinuate the occational word to make .the character more realistic. Afterall, as we are learning in my english .class, modernist writers often tell the whole story in the manner of .their narrator or vary it by which character they are centering on. You're right. What I *said* was (as the sentence before the cut and the last sentence in the cut explains) that some writers seem use this technique only for its effect, and it's done badly when it's constantly used! I urge you to take a look at the books I talked about to see what I mean. I'm not talking about an occasional word or two, I'm talking about a constant *stream* of accented dialogue or mistyped slang throughout the work, every sentence. Accented dialogue is a tool. It's a technique that works well if its used sparingly. Message-ID: Hi all! I finally waded through all of those backed-up messages. Durring my exile, some interesting things have happened. I read White Gryphon, Silver Gryphon, and The Ultimate Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I've also obtained two more e-mail accounts and have re-designed my sig to commemorate this. I'd like to thank all of you who sent condolences to me and the others who have lost someone recently, it truly means a lot to me and, I suspect, them as well. I'm presently working on finals and obtaining a mailing list. I'm going to call it "The White Coconut Mailing List" but haven't narrowed down the subject yet. I'll try to fit in Misty, McCaffrey, and Monty Python. Probably other SF/F authors, and most of the stuff which tends to distract from the topic of this list. I'll try to keep you posted! ____________________ -==UDIC==- /\ Why is he talking \ McCaffrey's White Dragon a.k.a. Studio execs drop filk from soundtrack; instead, they use Nine Inch Nails and Metallica. STUDIO EXEC: "Music is music. Who is this Heather Alexander person, anyway?" 11. They never read the script; therefore, they get Danny DeVito to play Vanyel. STUDIO EXEC: "He was so good in 'Twins!' He's sure to be good as this 'Vanyel' guy." 10. They pronounce Vanyel's name *both* ways, driving everyone nuts, including the date you take with you to see the movie. YOU: "That's the third time they said 'VAHN-yel,' and the second they said 'van-YEL!' What gives?" YOUR DATE: "Shut up!" 9. Uncomfortable studio sensors change Vanyel from saych to straight; Stefan and Tylendel are now Stefania and Tylendela. STUDIO EXEC: "What we do is get Cindy Crawford to play both. Just give her a different wig and makeup for 'Lendela." 8. End of film not action-packed enough; they decide to swap Van's last strike lightning scene with karate instead. STUDIO EXEC: "So Van jumps up, does a double-flip-kick, turns around, and knocks the leader out with a punch!" 7. Movie plot dumped by big studio; Disney picks it up instead, animates it using their own characters. DISNEY: "So, of course, we get Goofy to play Vanyel." 6. They bring back Mr. Ed to play all the companion parts. YFANDES: "Vaaaaaaaaaaaaanyel." (Of course, this sounds like "Wiiiiiilbur.") 5. Misty doesn't get rights to develop script; studio hires Quentin Tarantino to write it. ORIGINAL LINE: "I--Oh Gods! We're losing him!" NEW LINE: "Holy s****!" 4. While movie is a success, it's only due to the Misty fans, so studio never releases subsequent films. EXEC: "What do you mean, only a handful of the population saw this?" ASSISTANT: "They saw it eighty times *each!!*" 3. Four words: Movie tie in stuff. ANNOUNCER: "Yes! Buy The Last Herald-Mage Cereal! With marshmallow vrondi!" 2. Everyone on the mailing list gets disappointed; studio execs pick *none* of the choices we have discussed. JAGUAR, STORMCLOUD, CHONNI, MEL, KHENTA*, NOXCAT, ETC.: "You mean, they didn't pick _____ as _____?!" 1. Studio executives' email adresses flooded with angry mail; studio decides to make movie go direct-to-video only. EXEC: "This is the thirty-sixth message from this Rynath person about the movie!
