Read it! Read it as soon as > you can! Ohhh.. The book is stunning, nice to know I'm not the only one who loves it.. I add my voice to the recommendation most heartily. (one of the many things I liked in the book was all the little clues and pieces of the puzzle that gave it a multi-layered, rich tone. Namely, the references to stars and cats, and the comment "of course, there's no 'd' in 'Alec'" etc etc. And the end is very good; it doesn't _explain_ anything just for the sake of a tidy, pat "they lived happily ever after" tie-up.) Besides, it's probably the one book I'd take with me to a deserted island, if I had to choose. :) -Seanna ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 1996 09:57:35 EET From: "Sanna Koulu" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Female Bonding Message-ID: <4923F33ED8-+AT+-otdk.helsinki.fi> Khenta* (is that spelled right?) wrote: > And I would like to see more Tayledras women! I thought the Tayledras were supposed to be pretty egalitarian, and I'd have thought we'd get more strong women in it. Obviously Misty can write good women characters, like for example Jennifer Talldeer, so why don't we see more of them in minor roles, too? I'd suggest that the abundance of males is to give female readers a variety of love interests, but that doesn't quite seem to explain it.. (Well, about Sacred Ground - it did suffer from the wise old man - thingy a bit too much. I find it a bit strange. I have a few very close male friends, but most of my friends are female. I get along much better with women, since men seem to get scared by intelligent and bitchy females. Though I have a very low tolerance for chat about the clothes, boys etc, it's never been a problem: my friends don't seem to find the topics all that interesting either (though we do discuss Northern Exposure and Star Trek occasionally :). > It would interesting to do a study relating female IQ to the ratio > of male frinds they have. My male friends are all involved in SF&F, role-playing etc, and that's where I met them. Role-players and SF freaks have, I think, above average IQ, and are more often male. Therefore it makes sense that a female interested in those things will, on the average, have higher IQ and more male friends (who share her interests). I think. -Seanna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 1996 03:56:47 EST From: LSFG20A-+AT+-prodigy.com (MS KIM H MILLER) To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Karsites Message-ID: <097.04053305.LSFG20A-+AT+-prodigy.com> "The Lark and the Wren" really had my hopes up for a while that it would turn out to be set in Karse and deal with their societal issues (the church's stranglehold on politics/economy/society, the position of women in society, etc.) I'd love to see Misty write something set within Karsite society where heroes, villians, and ordinary folk arise from that society, and the resolutions also come from within. (I'm reasonably sure mine does not, for example. [I checked. It doesn't.]) Mail is not news. Mail does not _have_ an inherent tree structure. If, however, it will make you happy, I will pass those headers through. Anyone for whom this causes problems should mail me (offlist) and I will then remove them again. I think the woman could do anything, but then again I'm slightly biased! :) Maybe she could put out a short story collection about all the various incarnations over the years! :) -+AT+->--- Stormcloud In the name One in Black of the Moon Jenna, the Misty maniac I'll punish you! jwil3969-+AT+-simcl.stjohns.edu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 1996 15:39:19 +0000 From: "Charis Stewart" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Off-topic, killings Message-ID: The biggest shock about the Dunblane incident is that this kind of thing does not happen in Scotland, the closest example of this type of behaviour was the Hungerford incident in England. These were not _terrorist_ attacks but the acts of deranged people. Personally, as a Scot, the thing that made the most impact for us is that our country is so small that almost everyone knows someone who lives in Dunblane or who has relatives there. This incident should have been stopped by tighter gun control laws, if it had been a terrorist it takes more than gun laws to stop them getting weapons. This was a preventable incident. And yes it is worse when children die, my mother works with a women whose grandchild was at the same school, he was in the other Primary One class, his two best friends are now dead. How do you explain that to him. _______________________ |Charis Stewart | |Charis.Stewart-+AT+-ed.ac.uk| |_______________________| ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Mar 1996 10:53:58 EST From: "Stormcloud" To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: Casting Message-ID: <57DC6B17-+AT+-SIMCL.STJOHNS.EDU> Reesa wrote: > > > >I love the statement that I've been seeing spread across my school... On another note, I have mentioned this already, but my mother's friend, who is a really cool young actor, was just hired by Entertainment Tonight to go to the oscars and stand dressed as Mel Gibson's character from Braveheart at the place where the stars come in. My mother is, needless to say, ecstatic and is looking for an autograph, because it is likely that Matthew will meet him. I do believe that the Shin'a'in go for bright, colorful clothes and we all know the Tayledras do (see Firesong's joke about Eyeburner, and Darkwind's comment about scouts).
