Yes, I should have thought of it earlier, but it just kept getting more and more irresistably interesting. So. If you have sent titles to this list over the last few days, it would be ohsosweet of you to send them to me again, by private e-mail, because I remember lots of them, but I'll bet I've forgotten lots more. From now on, I promise, I'll make a note of any title that comes up the first time around. What I'm going to do with this list I don't know, but I'm a listing fool, and I'll come up with something. Maybe I'll put it on my homepage (giving y'all due credit, of course) when I get a homepage this summer. Maybe I'll just keep it and feel good about myself. I'll certainly be glad to send copies to anyone who's interested. Again, if you mentioned a book that you think needs to be on the list, refresh my failing memory. Thanks. When children are killed there is more of a feeling of wasted life. A child hasn't been able to experience everything this world has to offer. You'll never know what that child may have contributed to society, while an adult (at age 55 or so) has supposedly contributed to society. Children are also considered innocent, to kill a child who is innocent is perhaps more evil than killing an adult. (Don't take me wrong I think all life is sacred, I drive my parents nuts, when instead of killing the bug that is buzzing around in our house I take it outside and set it free. My brother laughs at me) Anyhow, back to the subject. They (the news agencies) may spend more time on these subjects so that they can get a better shock value, ie. viewing membership. I remember at home one time, I was watching the news. They came on about finding a body in a trash can that was decapitated. While they are talking about this they showed a police officer next to the trash can holding a plastic trash bag with something round in it. That trashbag was of the white variety and you could see something red in it. It totally grosssed me out, that they would show something like that without even a warning. This society has gotten to the point that showing pain, suffering and death sells stories. It helps the news agencies gather a larger following. (supposedly) I have always hated the reporters who ask a man who has just watched his family die a horrible death. *So, how do you feel that your family has just died in this horrible car accident?* How are they suppose to answer? *I feel wonderful, I can finally go on that trip I always waanted to go on with the insurance money I will get.* A person after seeing their world destroyed will answer that life is gone, that everything they loved is dead, so on and so forth. Asking how they *feel* at that point is like asking a person how it feels to be shot or find out your paralyzed. *Oh, just find and dandy* ( pulling myself from the ranting stage) Back to the subject at hand, the killing of children has a bigger shock value to the public. That is why when you have some crazy go after children they get their point across alot more better than when that same person goes after adults. It is the same with terrorists, they go after the innocent and this has a longer lasting affect than going after the guilty. It gets their point across. The killing of innocents, of the young, has always touched people on a deeper level because the loss of years, the killing of something that hasn't been able to live yet, to grow. I think *all* life is precious. I don't think what you asked sounded crass, Rozanna. It is something that this society(ie. the news people) have done to sell more. To get a larger following. Personally I don't care for that kind of reporting and all it leads to. I think this went a bit longer than 2 cents, but this is how I feel. Sorry about all the ranting. I feel strongly about this. Supposedly, every child has one or two parents or guardian(s) who have a legal financial responsibility for the child. The way the laws stand in the United States, no one can be compelled to assume financial responsibility for an adult who is not financially self-sufficient. Second, the theory was that the financial "safety net" for senior citizens would be self-funding (Social Security taxes); we pay the money in as we are able, while we are working, and we draw on that fund as needed when we are no longer able to work. However, children, older persons, and those with disabilities are not valued persons in our society--minority groups with little to no unity as a voting block--and so the needs of these groups are addressed inadequately and under protest. The voices of the individuals in these groups are, for the most part, not heard, and government quite often does things _to_, not _for_ these people under the guise of benevolence, without finding out what they really want or need. Several questions are involved here. First, what is the proper role of government, if any, in meeting the needs of individuals? And, second, what responsibility do we, as individuals, have to ensure the financial, educational, spiritual, and physical welfare of those around us? If any meaningful changes are to take place in our society, they must take place in people, one by one. This theme of personal and community responsibility towards others is a central one throughout Misty's books--IT IS HER MESSAGE--and it invites personal consideration and response. Elizabeth E. W. I don't have the references with me (me-+AT+-parents', books-+AT+-home), but Mel Gibson has made some very homophobic statements to the press in interviews. I think the biggest one was when (in the late 80s/ early 90s) he said something to the effect that he would never do any of that fag stuff in one of his movies. His comments were frequent enough and pointed enough that there were calls in the gay community to boycott his work. (didn't work of course, he is just to cute to boycott.) If people are still interested, I can try to find the exact references after I get home from Spring Break.
