Whoever (Selenay?) told Talia that the Queen's Own's companion usually chooses someone who is already a herald. Not a trainee, not someone with an unbonded choosing, nor someone who would be chosen anyway. (Talia fits into that category.) Also keep in mind that in the LHM books, many people thought that Taver was going to Choose Vanyel to be King's own. Vanyel, as I recall, was quite thoroughly Chosen and Bonded at the time. I realize this doesn't bring any answers, and there are a great many questions I have myself (for example, the ruling monarch must be at least Chosen, if not a herald. Daren is Chosen, so why is he the Queen's consort and not the king? What is an unbonded Choosing and what status does it confer on the chosen? I digress...) but the answers are nowhere to be found. Yes, the mage storm don't explain it, since I believe she was already asleep when Urtho died, and didn't wake up for THAT! (Although that may have helped keep her down for so long.) However, I don't believe it was simply being in the posesssion of someone with both mind magic and mage magic. Recall Need herself said that Kero's stubborn will and mindspeech drubbings roused her to a half-awake state, and (I've only read the books in question once, so bear with me) I believe she really started to awaken just before she crossed into Valdemar. First of all I'd like to say hello to all on the list. Hello! I've been lurking on and off for about 3 weeks, mainly because I haven't had the time to reply. Work you know! On the topic of series vs. stand-alones, I tend to prefer those books that manage to be a bit of both. That is they form part of a series because they have a theme that runs throughout several books, but each book in the series actually completes a story in itself. Several books and series come to mind to illustrate this. The Riftwar Saga and Empire books by Raymond Fiest. There are very definite plots that run throughout each of the books in both these series - The Riftwar and Mara's fight to restore her clan respectivily. However, each book also manages to form a complete story in it's own right. Magician forms a story in it's own right, as does Silverthorn. You could read them in any particular order, although it's obviously better read them in the correct order. Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is the same in this respect. Yes, you'd lose a lot of info. about the history if read as separate books, but it is possible. Of course, the Misty books also follow this format. Didn't someone mention recently reading the LHM series in a completely random manner? On the other hand, it's almost impossible to read Eddings books in anything but the correct order. And while I enjoyed the Belgariad, I found it annoying because there was so much left unfinished at the end of each book. And Eddings is not the only author that does this. In fact it's much more common to find this format. Four winds, SmokeHeart PS. Do the Ladies in Green require any further Champions? Also, I believe that Need says she awakened because of Kero's refusal to be dominated by the sword, thus "irritating" Need out of sleep. In WoFate, Need says she had indeed awakened before the Sunbolts entered Valdemar, and Quentin "sees" that she's awake when he first encounters her with Elspeth. As to why Need chose Elspeth, I think Need thought that she *really* needed(pun intended) her help in what was to come, and then when Need encountered Nyara she decided that Nyara needed her more than Elspeth did, especially since Elspeth had indeed found a mage-teacher and life-bond. Also, as to Elspeth's "stubborness" in straying from the companians plans, perhaps Need was subtly controlling her in that decision, especially if need had been awake since leaving Valdemar...DG&RFC:D Bahzell Bahnakson Champion of Tomanak Prince of the Horse-Stealer Hradani One-in-Black ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Mar 1996 15:50:58 -0500 From: Soljan-+AT+-aol.com To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Muppet request-got it Message-ID: <960325155056_177473900-+AT+-emout08.mail.aol.com> Thank you, I now have my cast list of muppets. I can't explain the incident in _Arrows_, but in BTS (when Kerowyn was ranting about musicians) I would imagine he got the giggles because not only are he & Talia amateur musicians, but so is every family member of his who isn't a full Bard. IMHO, I think this "bond" may be similar to the relationship Karal has with Florian in Storms. Other than that, I think that in AotQ it says that Heralds can "shut-off" Gifts in people who aren't Chosen, so maybe that is why there aren't vast numbers of Unchosen Gifted running around. Maybe, even, the Gods take a "personal" interest in ensuring that all of Valdemar's Gifted become Chosen (GD%RFC). Shavri couldn't be a full co-ruler because she refused to *marry* Randale, so that she (and Jisa) weren't in line for the throne. It's possible, though, that Daren might have declined Kingship for the above reasoning anyway. You know, a book or short story about Jisa and Trevan's reign after Vanyel's death might be interesting. I like Jisa, and mopping up after that kind of disaster (even though it did save Valdemar) would be quite a task.
