The Di Tregarde story is an old one -> any one familiar with Children of the Night will automatically recognize it as a scene from the book (Di and Andre of to rescue the gypsy kids), although it is a bit different (for one thing, Di and Andre are not having a romantic relationship, and they meet in a *graveyard* for crying out loud. Yes, I understand your point, but my concern is about how books/movies/whatever are percieved, as well as for what they actually are. As aware and educated as I sometimes like to think I am, I am affected by the marketing and propaganda that makes up the media. Amy Tan's books, whatever they may be in reality, are percieved by most people as "women's literature", and get stigmatized. It's unfortunate, but true, and since I normally avoid anything classified as general fiction, I'm more likely to accept how it is percieved. My apologies. I'm sure Tan is a good writer, etc. I guess when I think about it, I'm just tired of books where the main plot lines (with female heroines), center on her relationships! That's what I liked about Lackey for the most part, and it was only recently that I realized that the relationships that do exist and effect the plot line tend to be heterosexual. That's why, on par with By the Sword, my favourite Misty books are the Herald Mage Trilogy. Sexuality and gender just doesn't seem to be as big a motivator. Also, if anyone here is also on the Arrows Online, or whatever it's called, if you know either Rhea Windsong, or Almalthea, could you explain to them how to join this list? I've been getting questions...and since I hook up at school, I can never remember how to subscribe! ObMisty: I ran across a horrid post on SF-LOVERS that lumped Lackey in with Anthony! The only references to unbonded choosings I > remember, and that means there are probably twenty of which I don't > recall, were all in order for someone to get training if they needed it. Sorry, but I recently re-read Magic's Price, and IIRC, the passage where he states he would make a better MO was in reference to comparing himself to the job Shavri had done. He, along with Jisa, plus one or two others, knew that the reason he hadn't been chosen as MO was because Jisa would be. Vanyel never, never really expected to be MO; he simply knew that he could do the job, with or without the title. In fact, he spent more time bemoaning the fact that he should be out on the borders; the King only kept him near for friendship; there were other combinations of Heralds and nobles capable of doing his job. I believe the depth of bonds depend on two things; the level of Talent in the trainee and needs of the future. Gala said at the end of M's Price that she knew what the future would bring, and still Chose Vanyel. For petty, but Talented Heralds such as Lores, the bond is probably medium. And as for that old question, "Where do talented, but unHeraldic people go?", I'll repeat what I said last time. Into the various temples, churches and other religious places. Remember, most really Gifted people become Healers. (can't remember which book it was, but it was there). Individuals like Talia and Vanyel were necessary exceptions. Some healers attend the Healer's College in Haven (or what ever it's called), but lots of the healers we see out on circuit belong to a temple, or something. Sigh, time to go...too many essays, too little brain space left... *************************************************************************** "What are we doing tonight, Brain?""The same thing we do everynight, Pinky." It is called "The Best of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine Vol.II" It is a 1995 printing. It is really good. I enjoyed the stories in it. Just love the "Whoppie Witches" explanation. It is the first in a series (Something "Bones" and "The Mind of Magic" are the 2nd and 3rd books). Actually, most cultures do not have goddesses at all (if we are talking about real world cultures here). And, to be quite frank, I have never seen any compelling evidence that many of the religions that are purported to have had 3fGs actually thought of them in those terms. The Greeks don't seem to have thought in those terms, certainly, nor the Celts. I think that the 3fG figure is a neo-pagan concept and is an assimilation of a multi-theistic world-view to a mono-theistic one. > > ObMisty: There may be no one true way, but does anyone else feel like > the Holderkin are just plain irritating? > > Lady Rozanna IV > Sand-cat Extraordinaire > > "He who is certain he knows the ending of things when he is only > beginning them is either extremely wise or extremely foolish; no > matter which is true, he is certainly an unhappy man, for he has put > a knife in the heart of wonder." > - Qanuc Proverb from Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series > > May the seas be your solace and the forests a refuge for your spirit, Cennydd, Mage of the Green Silences. Does .anyone else do this - or is it just me that thinks this series bit is .getting out of hand. "Yes!!!!!!!!!!" I think I remember someone (probably Stormcloud) told me that Eddings' books were chopped into five parts because they were too big to run as a trilogy. I saw (I think in Waldenbooks) the "First Part of the Belgariad" containing books 1,2, and 3. The reason I hate books that are chopped because it's either (1) too cliff-hangery an ending, or (2) just an ending, as if the publisher ran out of pages and said, "Forget it, we're just gonna put out a second book." And I too buy trilogies (at least, before I started reading *Misty*) in threes, and I can't start with the second or third book if I wanted to (I did that once, with a Barbara "My fantasy trilogies are all the same" Hambly book and it was confusing). .I suppose from a contractual point of view it is .good, becuase you know that if you sell a series you can pay the .bills, but the series does not have to be in the 'one book in .convenient segments' style!!!!! (5!) ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe that's why there's a Mercedes Lackey mailing list and no David Eddings one. All us Eddings fans are sitting around, trying to figure out the storyline and remember what happened wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy in book one. I thought this was a reference to the ending scene in Arrow's Fall, when Talia and Dirk's wedding "inspires" all of the young bards and Talia and Dirk are dreading sitting through all of the future performances. Imagine they actually DID have to sit through the performances (and sit there thinking....."Why couldn't they just play a nice normal song like _Kerowyn's Ride_")...... Or they do sing _Kerowyn's Ride_ just to distract everyone (a nice fast tune completely different from sappy "Talia and Dirk in love" songs). and then they meet Kerowyn and hear her say almost the same thing..... it would strike me as funny in ironic, turn-the-tables kind of way.
