As I recall, somewhere, someone said that Selenay's first husband could not be a ruling monarch because he was not chosen. This implies that if he had been chosen, he could be. Also, I definitely recall the wording being that the monarch had to be at least chosen, if not a Herald. And what about the reign of co-consorts Arden and Leesa? Were they cousins? Possibly, but unlikely. Valdemaren monarchs can usually marry who they want to so long as a political marriage is not necessary, and why form an alliance with someone who is already an ally? No, I don't think you have to be born into the royal family in order to reign. Remember Shavri fighting tooth and nail to stay out of the succession once she realized the severity of Randi's condition. She believed that if she were married to him, then when he died, she would automatically take over. This is not the way things work in the UK. Admittedly, there could be some strange laws at work here, and it could be Daren has simply declined the title. Sigh. Historically, every culture I'm aware of that knew of the existence of other cultures had some kind of word to call the entire world. Many had creation myths involving an anthropomorphic personification of the entire world (I've always wanted to use that term.) Often, the word is simply synonymous with 'The World', but can you deny the existence of the word 'Earth'? How about 'Erda'? Or 'Gaia'? Or any number of other words in other languages that mean the same thing. I'm not an expert on this, but if the word exists in our culture I don't see any reason why it shouldn't in Valdemar, which is at least superficially similar to medeival Europe. What's wrong with books about women and relationships? Why are they inherently inferior? Why is it so much better to have a book where women do "manly" things (aka By the Sword) than it is to have a book about a woman's personal life (aka Beauty)? I don't see the need to ghettoize anything that addresses women specifically. I know some people do, but some people are full of crap. She was goddess of the moon, or rather _the_ moon, and she did hunt (she was considdered quite tom-boyish). As to the death part, I can remember two clear mentions of something similar. First, some mortal woman claimed that she was greater than the mortal who had given birth to Apollo (the sun) and Artemis (the moon) for she had only one son and one daughter whereas the woman had seven sons and seven daughters. This outraged the twins and they proceded to kill her children. Apollo shot the 7 sons with 7 arrows of pain and Artemis shot the 7 daughters with 7 arrows of sleep. The other mention was that Artemis would hunt at night, and would sometimes stop to bathe in a cool pond or brook. If a mortal hunter was (un)fortunate enough to see her bathing, she would turn him into a stag and his dogs would bring him down. All IIRC, of course. ____________________ -==UDIC==- /\ Why is he talking \ McCaffrey's White Dragon a.k.a. You know, the one that males have perpetuated since the first minute of human intelligence. They do that with so many things females enjoy. But have you noticed that a lot of men write literature considered female. They, of course, feel the need to hide their identities behind a female pseudonym so that other writers (male) won't think they can't write anything else. God, romances are the perfect example of that. I can think of very few male names among romance writers. And any of the fantasy/sci-fi that I read that is written by men has lots of fights, sleeping around and women screeching if they see a mouse and hiding behind the nearest testosterone-filled, muscle-bound, sword/blaster-wielding hero. *Sigh* I sincerely doubt it will change, though. I joined the list about a week ago and decided to delurk and introduce myself. I was introduced to Misty's books last Fall by a friend, and have been eagerly plowing through the Valdemar books nonstop and in order. I'm on Winds of Change now, and just got my husband started with AOTH. By the end of the Arrows trilogy I was completely hooked and started scouring the net for anything Misty related. Having spent a lot of time in #valdemar on IRC, frequenting Ian McDonald's Lackey web page, buying most of the Firebird Music catalog, browsing through the newsgroup, subscribing to Queen's Own, and joining this mailing list, it seems pretty clear that I'm a firmly devoted fan now. When I'm not obsessing over ML, I spend my time raising purebred Maine Coon Cats (check out my web page at http://www.silcom.com/~liscoon/liscoon.html ) and working as a lab tech for a supercomputer manufacturer. My other obsessions include anything Irish, crocheting, photography, drawing, and making new friends. Anyway, that's me in a nutshell :-). Regarding the S&S III topic, >I'm more than willing (have started in fact) to scour the used book >stores in my neck of the woods. I will buy any and all S&S books I >can find. I have put out several book searches on the net and one in person, and having since found a never-been-opened copy (and dancing for joy until I collapsed ) in a local used book store two days ago, I'll be more than happy to alert the list to any other copies that might get turned up by my searches. Rather than buying them, I'll just pass the info along and whomever responds the quickest can order the book right from the source. I think if enough of us do this sort of thing (there are plenty of places that offer free book searches), everyone here could get a copy. If I do run across another copy in person I'll probably be my usual trusting self and buy it and offer it to anyone here who wants to buy it from me. Heck, if anyone is looking for any other hard to find fantasy books, let me know and I'll keep my eyes open for them. (510) 644-9222 (I couldn't find an e-mail address) Back issues are $4.95 plus postage & handling. Killer Byte is in issue #23 and Roadkill is in #9. Roadkill is not a Di Tregarde story, but it is by Misty. (IMO, not nearly as good as most of hers). I *really* enjoyed Satanic, Versus (the one about Di and Andre at the romance writers' party). At the end Misty has an author's note that "the character of Robert Harrison and the concept of 'whoopie witches' was taken from the supernatural role-playing game, Stalking the Night Fantastic, by Richard Tucholka..." Does anyone know any more about this or where it could be found? Misty is usually so creative and has new stories to tell. This was way too predictible. (Should I put on flame-proof armor now?) I also had a problem with the use of magic for personal material gain. Does > .anyone else do this - or is it just me that thinks this series bit is > .getting out of hand. > > "Yes!!!!!!!!!!" > My problem is that I *like* long sagas, probably because I read so fast. Sometimes the author is chopping it into separate books for convenience, but sometimes the book is actually too big for the binding. Janny Wurts' "Ships of Merior" was published as one book in hardcover, but split into two in paperback: "Ships of Merior" and "Warhost of Vastmark". The paperbacks are 636 pages (599 without the glossary) and 492 pages (with glossary repeated). In an author's note she thanks the publishers for trying to keep it in one volume. It gets complicated though: Ships of Merior is Book 2 of a series. So will the next hardcover book in the series be Book 3 or Book 4? Despite above complications, I strongly recommend Janny Wurts' books. (Book 1 is "The Curse of the Mistwraith"). Misty's books are not immune to this. I recently re-read the 3rd Winds book without rereading the 2nd, and got totally confused. I had to read The Joy Luck Club for a class, so at least one professor thought it was "real" as opposed to "women's" literature. 00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 i don't see the need to lable books at all, that is a waste of time i am thinking of eddings books for instance which i have heard labled a mans book or guy gavriel kay which has been labled various things, or of ru emersons excellent night threads series which deals both with personal stuff and manly stuff why lable if it is good, read it!!
