Um, well, there really was a woman named Ima Hogg who lived in Texas; her father was one of the early wildcatters who make his pile early--and was so proud of what he had made of himself that that was the name he gave his only child. Further, he stipulated in his will that in order for her to inherit, she must never change her name, and if she married her husband would have to change his surname to Hogg. She was a very wealthy spinster, and quite a patron of the arts in whatever Texas city she lived in. Can't recall whether it was Dallas or Ft. Worth or Houston. I saw a picture of her in a National Geographic years ago, and unfortunately, she looked like a white-haired, expensively-dressed ...pig. On the subject of who to be Tarma, I would vote for Angelica Huston over Cher--I suppose they could digitally alter or whatever the right term is, her voice. If you remember, when her clan was attacked, she screamed so much that something was permanently damaged in her larnyx, so that the Tarma who had been treasured by her people for her lovely voice afterwards often got a cynical plasure from startling people with her harsh crow-call voice. --Barra ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Apr 1996 20:14:19 +0200 (METDST) From: Birgit Hanel To: mercedes-lackey-+AT+-vanyel.herald.co.uk Subject: Re: rehashing Talia's gifts Message-ID: On Mon, 1 Apr 1996 Soljan-+AT+-aol.com wrote: > Okay, so Talia can't hear actual "words" from Rolan. Seems kind of annoying to me, if he had the ability and didn't use it for good. I was reading the LotR under the covers of my bed by flashlight when I was in 3rd grade (~9yo). My mom had tried reading them to my sister and I as a bed-time story and had to stop when we hit the part where the BlackRiders were hunting the hobbits in the Shire (my sister was 8ish and freaked). Anyway, I started reading them on my own after lights-out and managed to get through the first volume before my mom twigged to what was going on. After that, I had to find time during the day. But it was worth it! By the time I as 10, I had read everything that had been published by Tolkien and was devouring every fantasy and sci-fi book I could get my hands on. Let's not confuse fairy tale retellings with the "Faerie Tales" series. There a multitude of fairy tale retellings out there, but not all of them were part of the series. The series has, for the most part, fairly distinctive covers with that sort of sepia ink drawing that you see on the Gael Baudion novels, etc. Plus they all mention that they are part of the series. > "Author's note, there is a story by Charles Perrault called Donkeyskin, > which because of its subject matter, is often not included in collections of > Perrault's fairy tales. I forgot that McKinley stated that fact in the note, however. BTW, for those who are interested, "DonkeySkin" was made into a movie in the seventies, in France. It stars Catherine Deneuve and a lot of other famous French people and is a musical. Best of all, they used the real chateaux of the Loire valley for the sets. Pretty cool! Add in that it was a romance set in Norman England and it made for an interesting subplot, but no more. Any other books I can remember reading w/gay characters basically had it that if the person was not the villain, he/she was a minor player who got dismissed (killed) early or was the suffer-in-silence best friend type who secretly wanted to be the lover of the hero/heroine. Maybe I'm just not reading the right books. I just finished one, a Danielle Steel romance (I hate her stuff. My roomie forced it on me.) in which the bad lady character (one of them) was a lesbian who had married the hero to mask her homosexuality. Granted, it was set in the 30's and 40's, but is that the pnly type of gay character out there? Give me some titles, please! I need to counteract DS's bad influence! I couldn't believe my roomie loved it so much, but I had reccomended books to her, so it was only fair that I gave it a shot. Oh, yeah, in case you're curious, she got killed to clear the way for the lovers. Of course, that was after the hero had threatened to blackmail her to get a divorce. During a blitz, she ran out of the house after her dog and I think a building fell on her. *sigh* I think I'll end this now. It's really off-topic. I've always kinda been partial to Brad Pitt myself, (esp. in Legends of the Fall); it's a weird thing, huh? Um, okay, I've got an ObMisty (a real one, thank you very much): In SRising, during one of Firesong's selfpity fests, he's thinking about how hard it is to meet someone, and he claims that there are never more than 1 in 10 or so who are shay'a'chern to begin with. 10% is the approximate proportion of people in OUR society who admit to being gay or bisexual. This leaves out all the people who aren't sure, who have spent their whole lives trying to deny it, who have had one or two long-term same-sex affairs, but tend to prefer partners of the opposite sex, and people who would just never think in a million years that they might try that kind of thing -- but might like it if they did. I can't believe that there wouldn't be any more people willing to dally with their own gender in a totally unprejudiced society than there are right now in our own happy world. Believe me, very few people are TOTALLY gay or TOTALLY straight; a lot of people experiment with homosexuality and like it, but then get very nervous and decide they can't handle the guilt, or they can't handle public reaction, so they stop. Among the Tayledras, all of those people would also be prospects for Firesong, because there would be no reason for them to quit. If everyone were free to do whatever they wanted, I think more people would be bisexual. Provocative enough? Well, I think it's so. I think Misty just dropped the ball on that one. Now, everyone feel free to flame me. I'm not scared. Hahahahah! I saw a picture of her in a National Geographic years ago, and unfortunately, she looked like a white-haired, expensively-dressed ..pig.***** I think I would have shot him before he wrote the will, and if he'd already written, I would have had a new one forged. Or bought off the attorney. Or see if I could sue for undue stress or something. Or changed it anyway and forgo the money...Nah! If she was so wealthy she could afford to be a patron of the arts, can you imagine her library?!
